Extended Student Absences

If an extended vacation is planned which results in a Mayfield stu-

dent being absent from school, the following should be noted:

Any student absent for 15 consecutive days is automatically with-drawn from school.

If a student is withdrawn due to 15 consecutive absences, a par-ent or legal guardian must make an appointment to re-enroll the student, complete all new paperwork, and provide proof of residency.

School Nurse Notes…It’s Cold and Flu Season!!

Do you know the difference between a cold and the flu?? A cold and the flu are both caused by viruses and

there is no known cure. Both are spread through person-to-person contact. The flu can affect adults and chil-

dren of any age. While symptoms can vary, the common ones are listed below.

With the flu—The onset of the flu is usually sudden or abrupt. A fever is common and usually high, 102-104,

and can last 3-4 days. Headaches, general aches/pains and exhaustion are common. Fatigue and weak-

ness can last 2-3 weeks. The flu can lead to bronchitis or pneumonia which can be life threatening.

With a cold—The onset of a cold is usually more gradual. A fever and headaches are not common. Stuffy nose, sore throat,

and a cough are common. Colds can lead to sinus congestion and earaches.

Prevention—Frequent and thorough hand washing is the best way to prevent colds and the flu! The most common type of

cold/flu virus can survive outside the body for up to three hours. Cold/flu germs can survive and are easily spread on door

handles, bathroom fixtures and hand rails. A good prevention for the flu is the flu vaccine. It’s not too late to get your vac-

cination!
