In my spare time, I love watching talk shows.

Hosts who ask their guests good questions that re-

veal a perspective on life different than my own,

fascinates me. I do not think I would be a particu-

larly good talk show host; but I have thought about one inter-

view I would like to be a part of. I would like to interview God.

What could we learn from the Source of Creation?

Reb L (or Rabbi Tom): God, what has surprised You most about

people?

God: People seem to always be in a great rush. They work

really hard to make money at the expense of their families and

their health. They get sick and lose their money to restore their

health. Their families don’t appreciate how they have provided

for them. They ignore their past, live for the future and do not

enjoy the gift of today. It is a gift you know, that is why I called

it the ‘present.’

Reb L: God, with the High Holy Days just around the corner,

how should people practice forgiveness?

God: I hear a lot of ‘I’m sorry’ every year; but I am not sure

many people believe they are. More people feel that other

people should apologize to them more so than they should

apologize to others. I would like people to forgive themselves

this year. I would like them to understand that they do not have

all of the answers and should open up their ears once in a

while and learn from others.

Reb L: God, if You could teach people one thing, what would it

be?

God: You are only on Earth for a short while: be productive.

Don’t let your first response to a perceived attack be a negative

response. You are filled with potential blessings every moment;

release them into all of your relationships. Slow down your

hectic lives. When you do, you will feel My goodness and com-

passion envelop you.

May this year of 5775 be one in which we continue to ask

tough questions and uncover meaningful answers. Marcia, Ka-

tie, Jacob, Daniel, and Benny join me in wishing you a

PROJECT ISAIAH

Project Isaiah is Tucson’s annual High Holy Days hunger project that benefits the Community Food Bank. We need your help.

Please pick up a Project Isaiah grocery bag as you leave Rosh Hashanah services, fill it with food and return it on Yom Kippur. After Yom Kippur, bagged donations will be accepted at the Or Chadash office through October 13. Most needed foods include: canned meats and vegetables, soups, cereal, rice, tuna, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, powdered milk and kosher foods. Monetary donations, payable to the JCRC, are also welcome. One hundred percent of the funds will be given to the Community Food Bank.

First, my wife Karen and I want to wish you and your family a Shana Tova,

a happy and healthy New Year. As I start the second year of my presidency

at Congregation Or Chadash, I hope to achieve the accomplishment of several

goals. The first is the recruitment of a full time Executive

Director. If our Congregation is to continue to grow and be successful, we need the

leadership of a skillful, dedicated Executive Director. The second is to retire the

mortgage. We all should be proud that we have less than $35,000 left on our

mortgage. Our next major project is the “Expand the Capacity” campaign. More

details will be coming soon. Next, in cooperation with the Jewish Community

Foundation, Board director Melissa Hall will be setting up a legacy program for our

Congregation. The Nominating Committee has begun the Leadership Development

Program for future Board members and officers.

The Board of Directors had a retreat this summer under the leadership of Anne

Maley and have made changes to our committee structure. Our congregation is

now 18 years old, it is time to review and modify all of the policies accumulated

over the years. We will also be reviewing our by-laws to see if they need to be modi-

fied. Recommendations will be made to the congregation at our next annual

meeting.

We will be having town hall meetings over this New Year. If there are topics you

wish to discuss, please let me know. You can also email me at

Tashlich at Ft. Lowell Park, Ramada 3 Tashlich is performed between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to get rid of our “mistakes.” We recite Tashlich prayers (“throw away” in Hebrew) as we empty our pockets and throw the contents into a body of water as another way to symbolize our wish to begin the Jewish New Year with a “clean slate” and be forgiven by God. Religious School students will meet at the Fort Lowell Park on Sunday, September 28th at 10:00 a.m. for a morning of fun activities with Religious School staff as we welcome the New Year.

The entire congregation is invited to bring a picnic lunch and join us at 11:30 a.m. for the Tashlich service, followed by lunch.

Potluck for Religious School Families

This is an opportunity for families to get to know the staff and one another while enjoying a light meal. Watch for emails from room parents about food sign-up and other information.

Preparing for the High Holy Days

As we prepare for the High Holy Days season of personal reflection, join our rabbi and cantor as we examine the themes of forgiveness and repentance. We will begin with Havdallah. Then we will watch a short movie clip from Return of the Jedi in order to answer the question: Did Darth Vader repent? A d iscussion wi l l fo l low concerning our own repentance and personal regrets and whether i t is too la te to forgive or repent. We will then have a brief refreshment break and conclude the evening with the changing of the Torah

SERVICE SCHEDULE (Selichot and Tashlich are not at the JCC)

SELICHOT

The month of Elul culminates with Selichot (forgiveness) services, when we gather in our congregations to recite prayers of penitence. Traditionally Jews recite Selichot beginning late at night on the Saturday before Rosh HaShanah and continue through the night. Reform congregations usually observe Selichot in the hours before midnight on the Saturday night just prior to Rosh HaShanah. This moving service urges us to reflect on the year that is ending. With strains of the High Holiday melodies as a backdrop, we utter our first confession of the season, as well as Sh’ma Koleynu, asking God to hear our voices.

CONTEMPORARY SERVICE The service begins at 8:30 a.m. and the music features Cantor Cohen and members of our teen choir; a prayer book written at Or Chadash is used for this service. Many of our congregants serve as Torah readers. The service is accompanied by guitar and is a little less formal. This service will be led by Rabbi Thomas Louchheim and Cantor Janece Cohen and is for families with children over the age of eight.

TOT SERVICES

This service is from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. Rabbi Louchheim and Cantor Cohen conduct this joyful service. Rabbi tells a story for children ages birth to first grade and displays for them our mantled knapsack Torah scroll. This is surely a delight for our youngest members and their parents.

CLASSIC SERVICES Services are led by Rabbi Thomas Louchheim and Cantor Janece Cohen, and begin at 11:00 a.m. Cantor Cohen, the Or Chadash Adult Choir and gifted musicians provide music. We use the standard Reform prayer book, Gates of Repentance, and our members participate in various aspects of the service.

TASHLICH

The word “Tashlich” means “You will cast away.” In this context, it refers to a custom dating from at least as early as the fourteenth cen-tury. Historically, Jews have the custom of putting bread crumbs or fish food in their pockets and shaking them out into the water to give more concrete expression to their desire to be free of sins. Join us on Sunday, September 28th11:30 a.m. at Ft. Lowell Ramada #3 for this community service.

KEVER AVOT Honor relatives who have died this past year or in years past by attending our Kever Avot service. Join us at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, September 28th at Evergreen Cemetery. Our tradition is to visit the Or Chadash section of the cemetery to participate in a meaningful prayer service honoring our relatives and ensuring that their memories live on in our lives.

YOM KIPPUR AFTERNOON DISCUSSION

Join Rabbi Louchheim at 1:30 p.m. as we discuss Living in Rhythm with God.

PROJECT ISAIAH

Every year our congregation joins local synagogues and Jewish agencies to collect food during the High Holy Days. Begin the New Year by making a difference in the lives of those in need. Please pick up a Project Isaiah bag on Rosh Hashanah and drop it off on Yom Kippur at the JCC or anytime during the week at our office. Monetary donations, payable to the JCRC, are also welcome. Every $1 donation = $9 in food. Funds and food are donated to the Community Food Bank.

Important Reminders…

TICKETS High Holy Day tickets will be mailed to all congregants who are in good standing and have made their dues commitment. Tickets for all High Holy Day services are available to the pub l ic for a donat ion of $180. College students (under age 35) and Military personnel may attend at NO CHARGE with a valid ID card.

If you have not yet received your ticket or if you need additional ones to purchase, please call the office. Entrance to all services by ticket only. Tickets are non-transferable.

BABYSITTING A sitter service is available for children through the second grade during the morning High Holy Days services BY ADVANCE REGISTRATION ONLY. The fee per service is $10 per child. Deadline for reservations is September 15. Contact Jim Liebeskind at [email protected] to reserve a spot.

Our Congregation is preparing for the return of the High Holy Days. On Yom

Kippur we remember our departed loved ones. As is our tradition, we will

publish the Or Chadash Book of Remembrance to distribute at the Yizkor Service

on October 4.

Many congregants honor the memory of those whose lives have blessed

them with a family entry in our Book of Remembrance. The book not only lists

our loved ones’ names, but includes the Kaddish and other special prayers, so

that you may take this booklet with you to the cemetery. These prayers and

meditations offer comfort as well as inspiration.

Please take the time now to clearly print the names of those you wish to

recall in the Book of Remembrance. Be sure to use an asterisk (*) next to the

names of those who have passed away since Yom Kippur last year. Then please

return this entire page to the congregational office no later than September 15.

Please enclose a contribution with your entry. Traditionally, one donates $18

book, We Called Him Rabbi Abraham: Lincoln and American Jewry

Friday evening Dr. Zola will speak on

“Profiles in American Jewish Courage.”

Lincoln and the Jews and another one related

to American Jewish history.

Guest Speaker: Amelia Cramer

Amelia is the Chief Deputy County Attorney, an office she has held since 2006. She is a past president of the State Bar of Arizona and has won a number of awards for her legal work and involvement in the legal profession including the Judge Learned Hand Award from the American Jewish Committee.

She and her family joined Congregation Or Chadash in 2007. Amelia is on the Or Chadash Board of Directors.

TOGETHER WE ARE S TRONGER

Yum! What a brunch it was.

The highlight of the brunch was Judie Shor Ning, a fourth generation Sisterhood member (through both of her

parents) and the incoming First Vice President of Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ) – Pacific District. It was

exciting to hear of the various accomplishments of WRJ –insuring the schooling of rabbis during the Depression,

supporting NFTY programs and creating a kindergarten program in Israel which eventually expanded through high

school. In fact, one of their first students is entering her first year in the URJ seminary in Jerusalem. Currently WRJ

is attempting to obtain equal access for women at the Western Wall. So many accomplishments! Judie brought

home the point that together we are stronger. I definitely was proud of being a woman of the Reform

Jewish movement. As a Sisterhood we will examine whether we wish to af f i l ia te wi th W RJ so

that we wi l l have leadersh ip a n d various programming opportunities for ourselves.

The CHAD ASH Brotherhood met for our annual retreat with great plans for the upcoming year. We will start with our first meeting on September 21 with a topic to be determined. On October 19, we will have a French Toast breakfast and a talk by an influential speaker, welcoming all in the Congregation. Fryer Dave Flyer will fire up the griddle and the attendees for the presentation by Rabbi on “Jews in the Confederacy.” This will precede our Visiting Scholar in Residence, Dr. Gary Zola, who will be speaking about Abraham Lincoln and American Jewry. This will be a fund raiser to establish a fund for the electrification of our sign on Alvernon. For this we will be asking for a Chai dona-tion of $18, and as at other events, require reservations to assure adequate resources. We will again continue ushering for the High Holy Days’ Services. We of course welcome all in the Congregation who wish to serve with us. While ushering in the Holy Days, we will also be helping in the construction and dedication of a new Sukkah. We welcome all willing and able helpers in this project, we will again host dinner. We will resume ushering at B’nei Mitzvah and “Friday Night Live!” Services to assure safety and convenience, on campus and at other locations. We are considering supplying Yahrzeit candles for the Congregation. These were popular and appreciated when we have done them in previous years. We will be reaching out to the congregation for other ways we can increase our membership and our involvement. As well as our traditional baseball trip, we are looking into trips to the Arizona Suns, UA baseball and hockey events, and maybe even a bingo night. We are looking for an increase in cooperative and coordinated events with the Sisterhood, including programs for Mothers’ and Fathers’ days, and various Congregational events. We are continuing our Men’s Nights Out, August was at Old Pueblo Grill, October is not yet chosen. Where would you like? So come and support these activities supporting the Congregation.
