“Our physical, emotional, and spiritual health requires rest. We need to take a break. We need to nurture ourselves. To take a time out to refuel, rejuvenate, and revive ourselves.”

CAREER / PURPOSE

T I M E T O R E V I V E Y O U R H E A LT H ! May is Global Employee Health and Fitness Month, a perfect time for reviving your ambition and dedication toward your health. While it is a health and fitness month, it is important to remember health is an overall state of well-being, which is broken up into six main pillars: career/purpose, social, financial, physical, community and emotional. Use this guide to kick-start and revive your health, one pillar at a time.

Your well-being in purpose is all about enjoying what you do every day. Remember why you started this job and enjoy the little things about what you do. You can also find a hobby that brings you real joy.

SOC I A L

Your social health is easy to put on the back burner during busy times in life, but it is just as important as any other health aspect. During this time of social distancing, get creative with gatherings. Through FaceTime, Skype or phone calls, you can stay connected with friends and still play games. This is also a good time to teach your kids life skills such as cooking and using a checkbook.

F I NANC I A L

Financial health is probably the most forgotten of health aspects but one of the easiest to learn to manage because of the available resources. Download a money management app or set a monthly savings goal for a substantial item.

PHYS I CA L

It’s the most common health topic and one of the most difficult to find time for. But, it can be easy and fun. Since gyms may be closed for a while, you can find online resources for at-home exercise or take your dog for walks. Once it is safe, join a gym and find a class you enjoy these fitness centers offer state employees a discount, or go for a swim when the weather warms up.

COMMUN I TY

Community is important for feeling included and loved. Since we are all coming together as a community to fight COVID-19, you can practice social distancing and still do research for different community groups at your church, volunteer groups or the state employee recreation teams. There are many opportunities to incorporate community into your life if you just search for them. Visit our website to find all the state employee recreation leagues available to join!

EMOT IONAL

Emotional health is a roller coaster throughout life. When you’re feeling as if you need help managing your emotional health, therapy is a great option. Don’t be afraid to confide in your friends and family, either. You’d be surprised at how many people struggle with their emotional health.

May is Mental Health Month. Millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness every day. Mental illnesses include but are not limited to depression, stress, anxiety, sleep insomnia, addiction, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, phobias, eating disorders and personality disorders. Mental illness has been around for as long as any other illness, but there has been a stigma surrounding it that makes it seem shameful or different from other physical illnesses. However, this is gradually starting to change as we are seeing a revival of mental health awareness and treatment in America. If you or someone you know needs help, utilize the resources below:
