FROM FATHER MICHAEL...

Catholic Education and Its Impact on Culture Catholic education seeks excellence in academic formation—in math, science, languages and art and more—which is then rounded out with the excellence of moral teachings. This moral understanding of the human condition, not just in the “why” God commands us to be a moral people but also how that moral standard is meant to be applied in everyday living. This is vitally important because it provides the student body with a holistic approach to education—not just compartmentalized learning one discipline over another. As important as academics are, what is key is the application of such learning to the human condition so that the student matures into a key actor in society, and is able to bring about the most excellent end result of their being. Right here in the greater Farmington Valley we have two depositories such as: First, Saint Mary School, which recently was named (awarded) a US Department of Education Blue Ribbon school—Congratulations—and so offers students a powerful and well-rounded education. Second, Northwest Catholic High School which also embodies the Catholic tradition of academic excellence as well as the development of the consciousness of students that they may serve humanity in the development of a fair and just society. In that vein, I would like to highlight and invite you to a fast-approaching event here at Saint Catherine of Siena Parish: Please join me and Mr. Christian Cashman, President of Northwest Catholic High School, as we host a cocktail reception and presentation on Wednesday, October 17, from 5:30 p.m. till 7 p.m. on the subject of “Men of Covenant & Women of Grace at Northwest Catholic.” All are welcomed to attend and learn more about this vitally important, mission-focused partnership between Northwest Catholic, Covenant Preparatory School & Women of Grace Academy which is transforming the lives of students with high academic potential from underserved areas of Hartford. Kindly RSVP to Karen Donohue at [email protected] if you plan to attend.

Nationwide Day of the Rosary, Sunday, October 7 Immediately following the 11 a.m. Mass on Sunday, October 7 our parish will join with others in praying the rosary for our collective intentions.

Please join us for this day of prayer as we ask the Blessed Virgin Mary to intercede for us to her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. We will gather near the statue of Mary in the church.

Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time In today’s first reading from the Book of Genesis, we hear the imagery of God as the Gardner—working in the dirt to create humanity. We see in this reading the sign of the Ultimate act of God’s Love—that He is willing to enter into humanity, through Jesus Christ, to come and be intimately involved with us in all of our very being: the good, the bad and the ugly. This idea of the Ultimate Act of God’s Love is expanded in the Gospel of Mark. Today’s gospel is both difficult for some folks to hear, those who are divorced and remarried outside of the Church as it may make them uncomfortable—and it is difficult for priests to proclaim and preach on. But let us be assured of one thing: God does not intend this to be a finger-pointing day at anyone. How could He, He has already given us His Ultimate Act of Love. The expansion of this Ultimate Act of Godly Love in today’s gospel is about the power of His Love and how it can transform and conform us to His ways. In the Catholic Church we call Matrimonial love a Sacrament because of its nature which is permanence and stability—something that every human family needs to survive. It is called faithful love, pure and simple. It is meant to be an imitation of the love of Christ for His Church (and by that I mean us—His Mystical Body). Do we want a God who will change His mind on Salvation? While marriage is not always easy nor is it Enjoyable everyday—what human relationship does not have its difficulties—we are called to be faithful in that love for there is more to it, or more that will be affected by it, than just the two involved. It is a family. As a bride and groom enter the church wedding ceremony separately they are two unique and distinct people—both in body and mind—and also in their understanding of self. But as they leave the church after marriage, arm-in-arm, they are One. Now the “Big Picture” takes over and what matters more than “me” getting what I want in discussion is what is good for “us,” the newly created family. When that family grows, even more powerful is that united and ultimate act of love between the two of them. Now we see the sacred understanding and the human importance of the union of one man and one woman, united in faithful love as the new image and likeness of God.

AN EVENING OF MUSIC AND REFLECTION with DAN SCHUTTE,

Friday, October 26, 2018, 7:30 p.m. Ticket cost: suggested donation of $10 per person or $25 per family. St. Catherine of Siena is so fortunate to be the hosting parish for the NPM Hartford Chapter’s Fall event: An Evening of Music and Reflection with Dan Schutte coming up on Friday, Oct. 26th. Dan Schutte is the composer of such well known songs as “Here I Am, Lord,” “City of God,” “These Alone Are Enough” and “Mass of Christ the Savior” (which our parish is currently using). Beloved by parishes across the country, he has been part of our faith journey for many years. Dan Schutte concerts are more like an evening of prayer rather than a concert performance, so if you love Seven Last Words or Lessons and Carols, this concert is for you. I have already heard from a parishioner in West Hartford who saw him a few years ago and can’t wait to see him again. It is sure to be profound experience for all who are able to come. We would love to fill the Church for this prayerful experience, so please tell your friends and neighbors from other parishes. Tickets will be sold after Masses during October and if you have any questions, please contact Susan Zybert at 860-217-0600 or [email protected].

ANNUAL LEAF RAKE It is that time again to help the needy in our Parish as well as our community. Come out and join other parishioners as we rake lawns for those who cannot. Bring the whole family, for what has

traditionally been a fun filled day. We are looking for people with rakes and blowers. The date for the leaf rake is November 17th at 7:30 a.m. in Russell Hall. There will be sign-up sheets in the vestibules of the church to volunteer as well as to sign up lawns that will need to be raked.

If you are unable to rake your leaves, or know of somebody that needs help, please sign them up. They need not be parishioners, as this is a community service project. Please feel free to contact Bill or Liam Tagliatela with questions or if you would like to sign up via e-mail, (860)930-3322 [email protected] or [email protected].
