From the Pastor's Desk

Dear Church Family,

The great golfer Jack Nicklaus was in Birmingham to raise money

for charity. While there, he met a blind man who said, “Mr. Nick-

laus, they tell me you play a little golf." He said, "Yes, I’ve been

known to play a round or two." "So do I, and I think I can beat you!

I’ll play you nine holes. If you can beat me, I’ll give $5,000 to your

favorite charity. If I beat you, you give $5,000 to my favorite chari-

ty.”

Now what Nicklaus didn’t know was that Charley Boswell was a

very good golfer. His caddie would help him line up his tee and

fairway shots. And on the green the caddie would rattle the flag

stick in the cup and Charley would zero in on the sound. Nicklaus

thought this would be an easy win.

Then Charley added, “Jack, to make the contest fun, exciting, and

fair, you choose the course where we play, and I’ll choose the time

we play -- day or night." Of course Charley chose night. Not play-

ing in the light didn’t bother Charley at all but it bothered Jack a lot.

Well, you guessed it. Charley won. And Jack wrote a $5,000 check

to Charley’s favorite charity. When the Birmingham paper inter-

viewed Jack about his loss, he sang the praises of the blind golfer

Charley Boswell. And at the end he added, “I met a man today

whom I so much respect, because he truly doesn’t let fear control his

life.”

Jesus told his disciples, “Fear not …” He was promising them the

dynamic power of the Holy Spirit. We have that Holy Spirit power.

I encourage you to use it. As you launch out into greater ministry

and mission for Christ, don’t be afraid. The power of Christ will

guide you, strengthen you, fill you, embolden you. The Rev. Robert

Shaw and your Session will lead you well. Follow them into a

bright future. Don’t sit on the sidelines. Serve your church! I know

I’ll be hearing great things about Temple Terrace Presbyterian in the

future. I will be praying for you.

Meet Our New Pastor!

Like Moses, I did not enter the ordained

ministry until my third career. During

my travels I continue to encounter

many diverse and interesting characters

who enrich my life. Highlights of my

wanderings include:

Bachelor of Science with majors in Physics and Natural

Sciences, First Career – Lieutenant, United States Navy

Second Career – Sonar Systems Engineer for General

Electric in New York

Ordained as a Presbyterian Deacon, then as a Ruling

Elder

Third Career – Minister of Word and Sacrament, Mas-

ter of Divinity from Louisville Presbyterian

Theological Seminary

I met my wife, Lori, in college, and with our children

grown, we enjoy traveling, especially visiting and hiking

in National and State parks.

Visit my blog at www.RobertsMusings.com

Fun Facts about

Pastor Robert

Nickname: For many years

friends and family called me

Bob. But when Bob and Rob

were both taken by others at a

recent employer, I opted for

Robert. After a few months, I

decided my mother had made a

good choice and I have pre-

ferred Robert since.

Favorite Food: Homemade

bread and dark red wine. I

make my own bread and my

wife particularly enjoys my

Anadama oatmeal bread. You

can find this and other recipes

on my blog.

Favorite Activities: Reading,

writing, hiking, swimming.

Favorite Place to Vacation:

National and state parks, mon-

uments and historical sites. We

have visited parks in 49 states

with Hawaii still on our “to do”

list. I have visited Glacier,

Grand Canyon, and Arcadia

more than once.

Favorite Movie: Star Wars.

Having worked as a systems

engineer, I am somewhat of a

nerd.

Favorite Book: I've enjoyed

Tony Hillerman's books about

a Navaho detective in the four

corners area because he weaves

details of Native American

faith into his stories which of-

ten end with poetic justice.

MUSIC PROGRAM

FUND RAISER and

FISH FRY LUNCHEON

Please mark your calendars for

Sunday, May 31st when the

Fellowship Committee hosts a FREE Fish Fry Luncheon

after the 10:00 a.m. worship service.

We will be serving Grilled and Fried

Tilapia, Hush Puppies and Creamy Cole

Slaw. This event was a Smash Hit last

year, and we’re aiming to do that again!

Chris Romeo, our Choir Director, will be

providing a program of musical entertainment for your

dining enjoyment! Although there is no cost for the lunch-

eon, we will collect a Free Will Donation that will be used

to help support the TTPC Music Program and our Music

Scholarship Program.

TTPC’s Book Club

May’s novel is “State of Wonder” by Ann

Patchett. Part scientific thriller, part engaging

personal odyssey, it is a suspenseful jungle

adventure with an unexpected ending and other

assorted surprises. The meeting will be Mon-

day, May 11th, in the church’s parlor-library.

All adults and older teens are invited to be part

of our Book Club. Please call me if you have

any questions.

This year’s Offering

of Letters stresses:

Feed Our Children!

Facts on hunger and poverty in the USA:

1 in 7 Americans receives benefits from the

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Pro-

gram (SNAP).

We live in the world’s wealthiest nation,

yet 49 million Americans, almost 16 mil-

lion children, lived in households that

struggled to put food on the table in 2013

(latest figures available).

More than 45 million Americans live be-

low the poverty line (sadly, that line is

$23,624 for a family of 4 with 2 children!).

More than 20%, 1 in 5, children live at risk

of hunger. More than 1 in 5 children in

America are living in poverty! Urge your Congress members to make sure

that children at risk of hunger get the food

they need to grow healthy bodies and

minds.

With a poverty line that is so low, when a

parent gets a job making a little more mon-

ey, they may get cut from programs if they

exceed the poverty line! Imagine making

such little money with 4 mouths to feed!

Since 2009, lower income families are still

earning $4,500 less than before the recession.

The first Sunday in May is when more info

will be distributed, but in the mean time, go to

their site for detailed information.

The Free TTPC

COMMUNITY

Bar-B-Q!

Friday, May 29

at 5:00 p.m.

We will be hosting our

first annual community

barbecue of the year! This

event is hosted jointly by

the Evangelism and Fel-

lowship Committees and is

FREE for anyone in the

community to enjoy a meal

of hotdogs, hamburgers,

baked beans and salads

along with desserts and

for them to experience the

warm and inviting hospi-

tality of TTPC and its

members.

We are looking

for volunteers

to help with

this event by

offering up

their time to greet and

serve people, donate food,

or help with the expenses

associated with this en-

deavor.

At past events, we have

commonly served up to

150+ very hungry and ap-

preciative people which

make for a very rewarding

feeling at the end of the

evening. So if you would

like to help out in any

way, please look for the

sign-up sheet in the Sun-

day Bulletins or contact

Susan McNaught or Fred

Crakow for further infor-

mation.

The Weekday School is a Great Place to be a Kid!

April was another exciting month here at TTPWS! We had so much

rain that some of our seed projects didn’t work out as planned! We

started some more inside our classrooms, near the windows, so may-

be those will grow without any issues. We will keep you posted!

We were still able to hatch our butterflies, and are currently watching

the metamorphosis of tadpoles turning into frogs! A special thanks

to Dr. and Mrs. Price for bringing them to us!

We learned about Easter, had 2 special chapel lessons about the story

of Easter, and many of us made special crosses or stained glass win-

dows. We also celebrated with parties and Easter Egg hunts. The

Recycling Truck came to visit us on Earth Day, and taught us about

recycling and doing good things for our environment. We got to see

them use special cans (they aren’t available in the city of Temple Ter-

race) that can be lifted and dumped by a special “arm” on their

truck. They brought us coloring books and crayons to teach us about

the importance of recycling. It was all very exciting!

May brings our annual Spring Program and Graduation

ceremonies. This year we are holding separate programs

due to the number of children enrolled in the school. The

VPK classes will be “graduating” on May 28th at 7:00 pm.

The 2’s, 3’s and School-Age classes will be performing June 4th at

7:00 pm. Both programs will be held here in the church sanctuary.

As we start to wind down to the last day of preschool, we will be

celebrating with some special events and parties.

Registration for Summer Camp and our Fall 2015 session is ongoing.

We still have openings in most of our classes. If you, or anyone you

know, are in need of a quality preschool or child care experience,

please have them contact the school office for more information. We

are a Voluntary Pre-k provider (free preschool for children who are 4

years of age by September 1, 2015), a School Readiness provider,

accredited by NAC, and are considered a Gold Seal Provider by the

state of Florida!

Carrie Gassen, Director (813) 988-3038

Each pocket-sized, waterproof RDK includes

a camouflage-cover New Testament, a daily

devotional, and a copy of Knowing God

Personally, and cost only $3.25 to distribute.

Over 2 million kits have been handed out to

military personnel since 9/11. While military

training has equipped them physically and

mentally, they can also be equipped spiritu-

ally to withstand whatever challenges they

meet. Your partnership in praying for and

helping to place the message of Christ into

the hands of our men & women in uniform

in greatly appreciated.

May 10th is Mother’s Day! We will be accepting donations for “new mothers” and their children at the Alpha House

of Tampa. It offers homeless pregnant women and mothers with young children safe

housing, and the tools they need to become self-sufficient and effective, responsible

parents. Items needed for women (all new, packaged and with tags on): all toiletries for

women, socks, slippers, purses, maternity clothing, gift certificates, makeup, hair accessories

and products, shower gels and lotions. For children: toddler bedding, twin sheets, blankets,

diapers of all sizes, baby wipes, pacifiers, infant clothing (new), towels and

News from Gigi, our Youth Director

Summer Sunday School - June, July, August

Dynamic, Artsy, Different, Fun are some of the words we can use to describe our 2015 Summer

Sunday School. If you have grandkids visiting, this is a time you must not miss! Dana Keenan is

coordinating it, but volunteers are needed to make it successful. Please sign up to help out during

one Sunday, or two!

Youth Sunday – Rehearsal May 14, 7:00 PM in the Sanctuary

Youth Sunday is a Special Sunday when the Youth lead the congre-

gation in worship. Our Youth Sunday will be May 17th and we are

calling all the Youth who want to participate for a rehearsal on May

14th at 7:00 P.M. in the sanctuary. Among the many parts in the worship to participate we have:

Greeters, Ushers, Readers and more. Youth Sunday is a great tool for training future leaders of the

church. Grandchildren are more than welcome. If you know which part your kid or grandkid

would like to do, please let Gigi know at [email protected]. Sign up slips will also be given out

each Sunday in your bulletin.

4th Saturday Event in May – Earth Day – May 23rd, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm (Kindergarten thru 5th

grade) Yes, Earth Day was April 22nd, but we’re celebrating it in a special way in the month of

May. In Job 12:7-9 we read, “But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the heavens,

and they will tell you; or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will

declare to you. Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this?” To

help us make plans, please remember to RSVP by May 17 for this activity. Bring your kids for a fun

day at the park and spark questions about how the creation might help us to understand God’s

faithfulness. This will be our last 4th Saturday Activity before summer hits.

We will be back in August – Horse Rescue.

Thursday Night Youth Club (6-12 grades) will be in hiatus until September when

we will announce the Fall Activities. Our high school seniors are making future

plans, so we are taking a break from our weekly meetings so they can focus on their

new journeys. Please pray for Gabby Campbell and Bianca Igwe.

Summer Grow - During Summer, Youth (4 thru 12 grades) are invited to participate in a com-

bined program with Forest Hills Youth Group. More details are on the way, but save these dates:

Tuesday – June 8: Color Fun (6:30-8:30 pm)

Tuesday – June 23: Carrollwood White Sand Cookout (4-8 pm)

Wednesday – July 8: 12 Hours InnerCity project (9 am-9 pm)

Tuesday – August 4: Movie in the Park (6:30-8:30 pm)

Tuesday – August 18: Back to School Celebration (6:30-8:30 pm)

Wednesday Brown Bag & Bible Study

CHURCH-WIDE STUDY:

THE GREAT ENDS OF THE CHURCH

ALL ARE INVITED ... to join your TTPC friends

in studying the 6 great ends of the church. These

"ends" are the 6 broad purposes which we Presby-

terians are committed to. All Presbyterian church-

es in their individual mission and ministry should

be guided by these 6 great purposes.

We meet every Wednesday night from 6 - 7 p.m.,

Conference Room. The topics are: The Church,

Worship in Spirit and in Truth; the Church and

the World; Faithful Witness; and Put These

Things into Practice.

Please bring your own brown bag dinner. We eat

while we talk. The discussion is lively and

thought-provoking. You'll grow as a Christian for

sure! And you'll understand what God wants you

to do as a Christian disciples.
