Quilt Chatter Volume XXVI, Issue 3 MAY/JUNE 2014 President’s Message Visit us on the web at www.dqnv.org Wow! What a beautiful quilt show! We are blessed to have so many talented members. Thanks to all of you who volunteered at this years show. It was good to spend some time with those of you whom I rarely see. Many of our vendors commented on the quality of your work. The response to the vendor basket ($10.00 receipt per ticket required) was amazing to say the least. Our promotional table was almost bare at the end of Friday hmmm…. By now many of you know that the weekend of the next show will be March 21st, 2015, happy St. Patrick’s Day anyone? A lot of judging for the next show will be done on St. Pat- rick’s Day 2015. And isn’t it fun to unveil the next year’s opportunity quilt and dates at the end of the show? Would anyone like to work on the 2016 quilt? The quilt show and the opportunity quilt are our money makers. The revenues from these events allow things to happen. What things you ask? Quarterly meetings, mailed Chatter newsletters, national teachers, retreat and the quilt show just begin to skim the surface. Our operating budget is actually larger than our checking account balance. The things you never think about….. It’s strange to realize that this issue of the Chatter will arrive after our spring quarterly meeting. Our next quarterly meeting will be July 16, 2014. Challenge anyone? Swap meet fun for all in a bigger room. Isn’t that amazing and yes, it costs more but you’re worth it. I hope that you have the challenge packet. The last I heard we had 3 left, by now they’re probably gone but you can check with Amy Mell to make sure. This is also the time of year when we begin looking for volunteer replacements. Are you interested in doing something with other members of the guild? Take a look at the first page of your membership directory. If you would like to volunteer for one of these positions please contact the person listed who is doing it. They should be able to tell you what’s involved with their position. Don’t forget that both the quilt show and retreat are also in need of volunteers. We would be nothing without your efforts. You make this organization greater when you volunteer; and make no mistake this is an incredible quilting guild! Christine

Opportunity Quilt: Karen Garth reported that January brought in $381.00, February brought in $616.00

for a total of $5,334.00 so far. The quilt is continuing to be shown at local quilt shops in the valley.

2014 Challenge: Amy Mell has 1 packet left. We are looking for a new Challenge Chairperson for the up-

coming year. 100 packets with instructions are needed by July 2014.

New Business: The next meeting will be April 14th. We did not budget for quilt racks, but there is a sale

in St. George, Utah and our current racks are in disrepair. Sandy Rogers motioned to purchase three new

racks during the sale. Kathy Farris seconded the motion. The motion was unanimous. The new racks will

greatly benefit us during upcoming events.

Anita Brechler is sponsoring Lola Jenkins to teach a class called Portrait Collage March 25, 2014.

Anita may be reached at 413-2140.

Kathy Farris would like to increase the pay for the teachers at the retreat. Mary Ashcraft moved to in

crease the cost of the classes to $30/full day and $15/half day. Georgi Shalhoob seconded the motion.

The motion was carried. An addendum was posed to this change. Each teacher would get 80% of the

funds collected from that class with no guaranteed minimum. The teacher will set the minimum number of

students to be accepted. Karen Garth moved to accept the addendum and Amy Mell seconded the

motion. Motion carried.

Proposals for Quilt Till You Wilt:

1. Pam Keenan began with her Christmas in July folded technique. Kits will be available.

2. Bobbie Stember showed her Olympia which will need everyone to purchase the pattern. Her sample

was made up utilizing 2 1/2 inch batik strips.

3. Teri Duffy had projects that will show off painting techniques with sewing then painting then

quilting. The kits will be under $20.00 and will include brushes and special paintable fabric,

with choice of motif.

4. Mary Buckeyne had March Madness, and original quilt comprised of 20 fat quarters. Will be using a

paper stitching method. The cost will be approx. $5.00 for 10 sheets of paper.

5. Bobby Stoner had an adaptation of the rail fence block. It is put together to look like a woven

ribbon. Can be a beginner or advanced class depending upon fabric choices. Can be made in many

sizes.

After the teachers left the room the members voted on the proposed classes. The votes were counted and

Mary Buckeyne was chosen to teach the class.

Adjournment: Jaine Vaughn moved to adjourn the meeting. It was seconded by Bobby Stoner at 2:46pm.

Circle reports followed.

Respectfully submitted by Kim Kohorst.

Mary Ashcraft

Mary started making quilts because she always believed she could do anything and so just jumped right in. Mary made her first quilts when she was about 10 years old for her two young-er brothers. “Mercifully, they didn’t survive this many years because I’m pretty sure they were awful! I used a paper pattern, and who knows what stitch size!” Mary believes she has made about three or four quilts from Eleanor Burns’ quilt in a day technique and about an additional half dozen since then.

Another love of Mary’s is making dolls which she began about nine years ago. At the DQN quilt show that year the Las Vegas Silver Doll-ers had a booth with dolls and patterns. She bought the pattern for Arley Berryhill’s Femme, and “stumbled” through the pattern. When she heard he was giving a class in town, she took it and has taken many doll classes since then and al-ways enjoys them.

Some part of Mary’s personality shines through each doll she makes, even when using someone else’s pattern. As with many crafts, a doll can take just a day or two to make or several months, depending on how often Mary works on it.

When Mary learned how to do a wire form and wrap it, a world of op-portunities opened up. She made one based on a lady’s face and her shop because Mary loved her “elfin features.” It’s very small, but her best in the respect that the face captures its owner’s face. Sometimes Mary wants a flamboyant piece, and sometimes she is all about em-bellishing. Sculpting faces from clay has become a passion, and can

obsess her for days on end.

Mary has sold several dolls but by the time she finishes them, they have become family, and so she is just not willing to part with them.

Other interests include polymer clay, beads, interior design, paint, and clothing construction. Mary also started sewing clothing at about age 10, and has made sports clothes, jeans, wedding apparel, men’s suits, underwear, and swimsuits.

Did you know that Mary was a Boy Scout leader for a year? Or that she used to ride horses, although, she claims, poorly?

See Mary’s prize winning Dandy the Dragon on page 15.

MAY/JUNE 2014 DQN Chatter

WHO AM I? Isn't that the age old question? Through research and the of studying people, science has helped us to under-stand ourselves better. Or, have they? Over the years I have taken a number of personality tests. Some were close, some just left me scratching my head and wondering if I answered the questions wrong. The summer before last my husband and I were work-ing on solving some of our issues when we found a reference to yet another profiling test. I love this kind of stuff so once again I ventured into discovering who I am. The categories of personalities are Idealist, Rational, Guardian and Artisan. There are four sub-categories in each group. If you have ever taken a Myers-Briggs Personality test, this one produces the same letter combina-tions. Are you an Introvert or an Extrovert? Are you Sense based or Intuitive? Are you a Thinker or Feeler? Are you Perceptive or Judging? I am an ISFP. I am an introvert (hard to believe isn't it), sensing (I have to see, hear, touch, smell or taste something for it to be real to me). I am feeling based. If you know me, you know this one to be true. And, last-ly I am perceiving, which in this system means I don't like to commit and make decisions, I like to keep things open and wait until I have to make a decision before I make it. Drives Thomas crazy! Learning I was an Artisan started to add clarity to some of the things I have done as a quilter. Like, buying a longarm machine. It was spontaneous and it's a tool! Artisan's love to use tools. I am true to character in that I am “spontaneous, adaptable, and competitive”. I love entering my quilts in shows. I live in the now! Don't talk to me about the past and don't put off something into the future. As an Artisan/Composer, I am in the minority in the Artisan category. Being feeling based makes me more of a Cooperative vs. a Utilitarian person. Artisans in general “will do whatever works, whatever gives them a quick, effective payoff, even if they have to bend the rules” . Even if they might hurt another person in the process. As a Cooperative, I want to get along; con-flict is against my nature. Are you an Artisan? The two most important letters are the S and P. A Guardian is an SJ, Rationals are NTs and Idealists are NFs, in case you know your letters from taking a previous test. My understanding of how each of the categories translates into who you are as a quilter is: the Artisan would be more of the art quilter or someone who is innovative perhaps even a “modern quilter”. The Guardian, I be-lieve would tend more toward traditional patterns, perhaps hand quilting and using only cotton fabrics. They may even be the “quilt police”. The Rational would create their own pattern and then follow it to the letter. An Idealist quilter would create quilts that are abstract or perhaps portray an imaginary world of dragons, castles and princesses. Have I intrigued you? Do you want to know more? Here's the website to get your answers: http://www.keirsey.com/. Italicized sentences are copied from the website verbatim. David Keirsey also wrote a book that describes these personality types and how we relate to others. I devoured the book! Continued on page 13

QUILT ‘TIL YOU WILT 2014 At the March Board Meeting there were five submissions for doing QTYW this year. They were all great projects and I would have signed up to do any one of them. Much to my surprise, I was cho-sen. I started clapping and got all giddy. I was so excited. I will be teaching a pattern that I designed in 2007. I called it March Madness because the possibili-ties occupied my mind for the entire month of March nearly driving me mad. It is kind of like triangle paper in that you stitch along the dotted lines and then cut the pieces out. But, instead of just form-ing triangles the pattern also create squares and rectangles. It’s fast and simple to follow. No cut-ting lots of tiny pieces before you can even start. Just layer two fabrics (1/2 of a fat quarter in size) and lay the paper on top. Follow the directions and before you know it you have finished block. QTYW is on Saturday, July 19th at the Henderson Convention Center. It’s an all-day sew-in start-ing at 9:00 in the morning and we wrap up at 4:00. Lunch is a Pot Luck; everyone brings a dish to share. It is will be a fun day! The cost is $35.00. Registration is required; the form is included in this newsletter on the next page. I have also posted some pictures on the website and the supply list. Hope you decide to join us! Mary Buckeyne

National Service Project - Quilts of Valor The board has voted for a National Service Project for the guild to participate in, Quilts of Valor (QOV).

Victoria Hall has recently moved to our area and is now the state of Nevada coordinator for QOV. She is also a guild member. Victoria is requesting either quilts that are 60” X 80” long (patriotic colors are the most requested) or tops of that size in the 2014 QOV block, Hearth & Home. A pillowcase or presentation bag is appreciated with tops and quilts. See the pattern on the next page.

Your circle board rep can bring them to the monthly board meetings or you can bring them to the July quarterly meeting July 17th. Your circle rep also has the Hearth & Home pattern; it was handed out at the April 14th board meeting. You can also go onto the Quilt of Valor Foundations website for more information. Victoria Hall will be glad to answer any questions that you may have and is willing to travel to talk with your circle if you would like her to do so. You can call her at 702-637-4667, or email her at victoria.colburn-hall@QOVF. The deadline for this project is July 31, 2014. Happy sewing, Christine

Silver Threads Dolores Verwey gave a trunk show of her beautiful quilts on St. Patrick's Day. Delores’ work is outstanding and the ladies enjoyed seeing the quilts and learning how Dolores worked on each one.

She also brought a friendship quilt that was published in the 1992 AQS Calendar.

We are continuing our Block of the Month with Pat Conway.

Art Quilts Etc. At our March meeting we had two mini workshops: Karin Serra showed us how to dye silk with Sharpie markers, and Connie Eikenberry showed us several stretches specific to the work that we do to keep us healthy and able to work more comfortably. Thank you ladies!

This month Linda Natale will be showing us how to make a naked rope bowl with a twist.

I can’t tell you how relieved and gratified we are that we are totally finished with the making, marketing and ticket selling of the 2014 opportunity quilt. Kudos to Michele Fowler for her design, to all of the makers, to the design and marketing committees and all of the sitters and sellers at the various venues!

Deb Lara

Bluebirds The Bluebirds met March 10th with 16 members present. One interest this year is to complete a block a month. Pat Vatthauer put together the large strip-pieced hearts we made in February. Another strip-pieced project was a large yellow star block consisting of four small blocks put together. And in March we are chal-lenged by a house block with individual embellishments. Gail Smith, our leader, has been coming up with block ideas, but is seeking input from members too. Ida Copeland taught us two unusual and new binding techniques in March. One is particularly good for art quilts. The other can be used as a surprise piping in the binding. Our April 14th meeting will be our annual Quilt Hang/Potluck Picnic at Marge Stanbridge's home. In May Dolores will share a Christmas Wreath project, and Marge will demonstrate her one fabric chicken or log cabin chicken pin cushion.

Black Mountain March, 2014

“Urban Vibe” was chosen as our Saturday work meeting for May. The meeting will be May 17 at 9:00 and last until 3:00. We will bring potluck for lunch and snacks to enjoy throughout the day. June 21 will be “Club Sandwich” with flowers. Our quilt show will be April 4 to 6.

On the mystery quilt for the wall hanging the sashing should be cut 8 ½” by 2 ½”. Kathy handed out the sec-ond step for the mystery quilt. Some people brought green fabric to add to our basket for the quilt show. Nancy Shaffer suggested that we buy one of the green bags to include in our basket. Everyone donated a dollar to buy the bag. Lora Norman did our trunk show. She showed how she uses cheater fabric for her quilts. We need someone to do the trunk show in May.

April, 2014

Kathy gave us the next step in the mystery quilt. She is collecting tabs from soda cans for the Ronald McDonald house. “Goodbye to the Grid” is being taught by Dena Crain. It will be held at Karen Garth’s “barn” on May 9 and the cost is $40. Details are on the website.

We are unable to use the pattern for Urban Vibe so we will create our own pattern. Lana and Laura Norman will get together to make a pattern. We will meet on May 17th at 9:00 at Hobby Lobby and have a potluck lunch.

Kathy Farris was at Street Teens and met a young man who commented on how he had received a Christ-mas stocking from “home home”. It meant so much to him. He wanted Kathy to say Thank You for the good-ies and the stocking.

Dana has a friend in Arizona who lost everything due to a fire in their home. If you have anything that you can contribute contact Kathy Farris. Sandy Crawford is going to ship the items. Another one of our quilter friends needs some furniture for her house. She is getting bunk beds for the kids but she needs the linens for both beds. Plus she needs furniture for her house.

When we finish our mystery quilts we will be doing a panel quilt. We will be able to get ideas as to what we can do to make the panel into a quilt. The quilt show was a great show. Thanks to everyone who helped every day of the show. Bibi got Viewer’s Choice ribbon for the quilt she made.

We had several new members join us this evening. They introduced themselves and then we had show and tell. Norma Chadwick will do the trunk show next month.

Finishing Stitchers Attending the February meeting: Bibi Bellotto, Debi Rodriguez, Nancy Clark, Jan Fulton, Laurel Trant, Yvonne Higgins, Linda Natale, Ann Pugh, Bobbie Stoner, Sue Rasmussen, Joann Jameson. Sew Little Time notified us that she is looking for class instructors. If interested, contact her. Meeting was conducted by Linda Natale for Jean Schantol. A discussion of the AQS Phoenix show was held, as several members had attended last week. No 50-50 tickets this month, as we did not have them. It was suggested that a financial report be given each month, and included in the minutes. Bobbie gave the board report, and shared the new form for submitting volunteer hours. This will not need to be used for the Quilt Show and Retreat, as these functions have sign-in sheets for their scheduled volun-teers. The form and rules are posted on the website.

Loose Threads Loose Threads Circle is busy doing a number of “sew -ins” making “I Spy” quilts for young children in local valley hospitals. We still are in need of novelty print fabrics and larger yardage for backings. Please give donated fabric to Bonnie Kulwin or your circle chair person. Thank you for helping us by sharing your fabric! Loose Threads’ Bonnie Kulwin is starting a free quilting circle for young children. They will be meeting at the Henderson Multigenerational Center. We are looking for sewing machines that can be donated to our teaching circle. Please contact Bonnie Kulwin at 702-524-3936.

Modern Quilt Circle, Old is New This new circle meets the fourth Saturday of each month. Meetings start at 1:30, at Sew Little Time. 5335 S. Fort Apache, Las Vegas. We have decided to have a business meeting (we keep that part short), a mini class (last month was on the many ways to sew circles), an idea exchange and show and tell on the odd numbered months. On the even numbered months, we will have a sew in/hands on meeting. Among the things we are working on are the table mats for the retreat. We have also decided to have our own face book page so we can keep each other up to date, post pictures and comments/receive suggestions on what we are working on. That way , if you miss a meeting, you will still know what is happening. Please join us…we are a new circle but enthusiastic! For more information call Ann Pugh, 702-526-6667, [email protected].

Vegas Quiltin Bees The Bees meet at Hollywood Recreation Center on the 4th Saturday of most months. At the May meeting members will have the option of three different demonstrations/projects to choose from. Anna Marie will teach a new scissor case; Kathy M. will teach name tags and Tess her very special Beatrice Doll. At the June meeting members will participate in a mystery quilt project taught by Donna W. The Bees have an on-going outreach project of lap quilts for wheel chair bound ALS patients. Our goal is 80 quilts and members are well on their way of meeting that goal.

Uncommonly Corduroy - Quilt Patterns, Bag Patterns, and More By Stephanie Dunphy

Have you ever considered making a quilt from corduroy? It’s not the same fabric

some of us remember from the 1970s. The new corduroy is lightweight, soft, and available in some great prints. Robert Kaufman has a line called Cool Cords. Regular fabric stores had some cute prints last fall and I wondered what could be made with them other than pants. Stephanie Dunphy has answered that question with a new book on making quilts, bags, and even a scarf from cordu-roy. Her quilts have a modern look and just make you want to try a new chal-lenge - one using corduroy!

It is with great sadness that we remember long-time member Esther Stednick, who passed away April 13, 2014.

Many will remember the buttons, bows, lace and pig face fabric challenge a few years ago. That fun challenge was one of Esther’s ideas.

Esther will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband Paul, three

children, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

The Annual Challenge and Swap Meet will be Thursday, July 17, 2014. Please contact me by email at [email protected] or by phone, 951-212-1180, if you would like to reserve a table or two for the Swap Meet. I need your reservations by July 2nd in order to send the room arrangement to the Henderson Convention Center. We will have additional room space, seating, and tables at the July meeting.

Don’t forget to bring your Challenge entries!
