May I Have A Word? Bro. Greg Hancock One of my power tools stopped working, right in the middle of a project. I checked to make certain it was plugged in; it was. I checked to make certain I hadn’t accidentally bumped the power switch and turned it off; I hadn’t. I had work to do and the tool with which I needed to do it just sat there, useless. I started to take the thing back to the store where I’d bought it but the operator’s manual had a section entitled, “Troubleshooting,” that addressed my particular situation. It advised me to allow the tool to cool off; then press the ‘Reset’ button located under the power cord. I followed the advice and, Behold!, the tool started to work again. I could finish the project on which I was working. I have encountered days when I’ve truly wished I could find a reset button for my life just give things time to cool off; push the button and it would be like nothing bad ever happened; no conflict ever occurred; nothing valuable ever was lost. Life doesn’t work like an overheated power tool, though. By Grace, we are provided with a divine reset button that allows us to start over without condemnation; but Grace doesn’t make everything the way it was. When we make mistakes, when we intentionally do things that are wrong, even when we are victimized by circumstances over which we have no control, life may eventually be turned-on again, but it is seldom as if nothing ever happened. Some things we were supposed to do and be some things we truly wanted to do and be are interrupted, never to be completed. Relationships are broken, opportunities are lost, people integral to our happiness are lost forever. What then? Life under Grace is a life of constant adjustment and adaptation. From one day to the next, things change and we are challenged by what change means. We may choose to stare, disappointed, at what is broken and spend the rest of our lives grieving the reality of broken-ness; or we may choose to accept that some things will never be and move on to other things that can be. May I Have A Word? Bro. Greg Hancock

One of my power tools stopped working, right in the middle of a project. I

checked to make certain it was plugged in; it was. I checked to make

certain I hadn’t accidentally bumped the power switch and turned it off; I

hadn’t. I had work to do and the tool with which I needed to do it just sat

there, useless.

I started to take the thing back to the store where I’d bought it but the

operator’s manual had a section entitled, “Troubleshooting,” that

addressed my particular situation. It advised me to allow the tool to cool

off; then press the ‘Reset’ button located under the power cord. I followed

the advice and, Behold!, the tool started to work again. I could finish the

project on which I was working.

I have encountered days when I’ve truly wished I could find a reset button

for my life – just give things time to cool off; push the button and it would

be like nothing bad ever happened; no conflict ever occurred; nothing

valuable ever was lost.

Life doesn’t work like an overheated power tool, though. By Grace, we

are provided with a divine reset button that allows us to start over without

condemnation; but Grace doesn’t make everything the way it was. When

we make mistakes, when we intentionally do things that are wrong, even

when we are victimized by circumstances over which we have no control,

life may eventually be turned-on again, but it is seldom as if nothing ever

happened. Some things we were supposed to do and be – some things we

truly wanted to do and be – are interrupted, never to be completed.

Relationships are broken, opportunities are lost, people integral to our

happiness are lost forever. What then?

Life under Grace is a life of constant adjustment and adaptation. From

one day to the next, things change and we are challenged by what change

means. We may choose to stare, disappointed, at what is broken and

spend the rest of our lives grieving the reality of broken-ness; or we may

choose to accept that some things will never be and move on to other

things that can be.

Brother Greg

Musically Speaking

Stuart Underwood, Minister of Music

Thanks to George Swope Munday for another beautiful job on our offertory last Sunday. The Adult Choir did a wonderful job on their anthem, "Worthy Is Your Name". This Sunday George will be here to play our offertory again. The Adult Choir will be singing another new anthem, "We Fix Our Eyes". There is no evening service at SBC, we will join our community for our 5th Sunday service at Calvary Hill BC with Jay Mumper, pastor at Stanford Presbyterian Church, speaking. It is once again time to start our Student Salute each week in The Pathfinder. The names and addresses of our college students will be listed so that cards and notes can be sent to them while they are away.

Have a great week! Stuart

Handbell rehearsal will resume on Monday, September 30 at 6:00PM.
