welcome to THE CHAMBER

A WORD FROM your chairman

Success: Our success as a community and certainly at the Chamber is dependent on the support of strong business leaders.

Recently, we recognized three of those outstanding leaders at our Excellence Awards News Conference.

Janette Boehman, Marketing and Digital Specialist with WBKO television was named the 2018 ATHENA. The ATHENA Award honors the local businessperson who contributes most greatly to the community and advancement of women in the business world.

Todd Matthews, President of Scott and Murphy, Inc., was named the 2018 Small Business Person of the Year. The award recognizes a business leader who is associated with a for-profit company that has experienced recent business growth and is involved in the development and growth of the Bowling Green community.

Tori Gerbig, co-founder and CEO of The Pink

Lily Boutique, was named the 2018 Entrepreneur of the Year. A vital part of our community’s success requires us to have a business environment that breeds entrepreneurship. Growing our

entrepreneurial ecosystem is a top priority of our community and Tori has certainly demonstrated this.

I would like to share a special word of thanks to the Cornelius Martin family and the staff at Martin Dodge Jeep Chrysler RAM for sponsoring the ATHENA Award each year and to Citizens First for sponsoring our Small Business Person of the Year award. Their support of business leaders in our community is greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to these three outstanding leaders in our community!

As always, thank you for your continued support of the Bowling Green Area Chamber! And please join us for the May Coffee Hour presented by BGMU on May 25 at the Knicely Conference Center. Hope to see you there!

Bowling Green was founded on the banks of Barren River and relied heavily on the river and steamboat commerce for its livelihood. In 1868, one hundred and fifty years ago, the City of Bowling Green began to pump water out of the Barren River. The steam driven system pumped water to the top of Reservoir Hill into an open

A WORD FROM our sponsor

reservoir adjacent to the present day site of the Red White and Blue water tank. Water flowed out of the reservoir by gravity down to homes and businesses of 4574 Bowling Green residents. Imagine the delight of having running water in your home! Never mind that it was raw river water… unfiltered, unchlorinated and otherwise untreated… this was real progress!

What a long way we have come since then. Waterborne diseases — cholera, typhoid, and dysentery — are no longer issues. Water is treated to previously unthinkable levels of quality and quantity. Today, BGMU serves approximately 60,000 persons in our retail service area and another 60,000 in our wholesale area (distributed by Warren County Water District). It’s hard to fathom that all the water we

use today is still pumped out of the same pool on the Barren River that served our residents in 1868.

For many of us, our water supply has become an afterthought - out of sight and out of mind. We expect water to be there when we turn on the tap, and we expect dirty water to be cleaned before going back in the river. Thankfully, we can’t really imagine life without safe, clean water. However, we invite you to take a moment to appreciate the work and effort of those who treat water and wastewater in Bowling Green. BGMU’s mission is to be customer focused in all we do, and behind the scenes, employees work hard to keep your family healthy and safe.

Thank you for celebrating 150 years of quality water and wastewater service!

GREG C. HEITZMAN, PE, MBA

Greg Heitzman is President of BlueWater Kentucky, a management consulting firm serving the water and wastewater industry.

From 2011 to 2015, Greg served as Executive Director/CEO of the Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD). Prior to MSD, he worked 31 years with the Louisville Water Company serving as Chief Engineer from 1991 to 2007 and President/CEO from 2007 to 2013.

Greg obtained his Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Kentucky and an MBA from the University of

Louisville. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Kentucky. He currently serves on the boards Kentucky-Tennessee AWWA; Louisville Water Foundation; and Tree Louisville. He serves as Chair of the Kentucky Lead Workgroup and he volunteers with WaterStep, a Kentucky non-profit that “saves lives through safe water”.

He and his wife, Linda, reside in Louisville. Their daughter, Claire, is married and teaches high school in Lexington, KY.

Lorri Hare

The ATHENA Award honors the local businessperson who contributes most greatly to the community and advancement of women in the business world. ATHENA International is dedicated to recognizing individual leaders who have opened doors of opportunity for women in the workplace and beyond. The prestigious ATHENA Award celebrates these positive role models - more than 7,000 women and men to date -on a local, state, national and international level.

2018 Small Business Person of the Year Todd Matthews, President of Scott & Murphy, Inc. has been named the 2018 Small Business Person of the Year presented by the Chamber and Citizens First.

Raised in Barren County, Todd learned the value of putting one's self into their work and embracing a strong work ethic - which he still holds today. After graduating from Western Kentucky University with a Civil Engineering Degree in 1998, Todd joined Scott & Murphy, Inc. and would serve as a project manager for the next two years. After a short stint with Bell South's construction and engineering division he returned to Scott & Murphy, Inc. as its

Commercial Concrete Division Manager and Vice President. Since returning, his division has doubled its revenues, added over 30 employees, and expanded the main offices and warehouse facilities.

As a Chamber Board member, Todd is an active member of the community and involved in several charitable causes including - United Way of Southern Kentucky, Bowling Green Christian Academy, Salvation Army, among many others.

The nominees for the 2018 Small Business Person of the Year were:

Tony Bishop - Owner, Hot Yoga

Neal Clayton - Owner of The Firemen Moving Company

Christina Dawson - Founder, SOKY Jobs, LLC

Jeff Fields - CEO, J. Warner Ventures / Cheetah Clean Auto Wash

Since 1985, the Chamber has annually named a community member the Small Business Person of the Year. The award recognizes a business leader who is associated with a for-profit company that has experienced recent business growth, employs 100 or fewer full-time employees and is involved in the development and growth of the Bowling Green community.

Entrepreneur of the Year Tori Gerbig, co-founder and CEO of The Pink Lily Boutique, has been named the recipient of this year's special Entrepreneur of the Year award.

As the fastest growing city in the State of Kentucky, Bowling Green is host to many companies locating and expanding their operations here. A vital part of our continued success as a community requires us to have a business environment to breed entrepreneurship. Growing our entrepreneurial ecosystem is a key goal in our community's Engaged Strategic Plan.

Pink Lily, a local start-up, began operations as a Facebook Group in 2013 selling a limited selection of women's boutique clothing and accessories to the Bowling Green market. Within the company's first six months of operations, company owners Tori and Chris Gerbig knew product demand was quickly outgrowing fulfillment capacity and PinkLily.com was born in January 2014. In the e-commerce site's first year, sales doubled each month, growing from a projected $50,000 in revenue for the year to $4.1 million. By the end of year two, PinkLily.com would grow by 300 percent."I cannot think of a finer example of entrepreneurial spirit." Said Steve Sheldon, CEO of Sheldon's Express Pharmacy and Real Estate Developer. "Tori has taken a dream of hers and turned it into a major enterprise right here in Bowling Green.

The award recipients will be the keynote speakers at the Chamber's Excellence Awards Luncheon on May 22 at 11:30 am at the Knicely Conference Center. The event is the highlight of Small Business Appreciation Month and will also include the announcement of Administrative Professional of the Year and ATHENA Young Professional. Registration is required at www.bgchamber.com or by calling 270-901-4605. Individual tickets are $32, and corporate sponsor tables of eight are $300.
