where new titles are always sprouting!
We welcome and appreciate all the generous donations of used books that are clean and in relatively good condition. Due to space issues we cannot accept encyclopedias, textbooks, periodicals and magazines. Self help and medical books should be dated within ten years of the current year. Some items that we are unable to use are donated to charitable organizations.
A heartfelt thank you to Brian Hurd for sharing books from his Holocaust collection.
We have some very dedicated volunteers who sort through donations, shelf books and keep the library looking neat and inviting. If interested in helping, please leave your name and contact info at the front desk.
Book Reviews
Defending Jacob by William Landay This novel reads like a first-rate thriller, but at it’s heart it’s a love story. Andy Barber is a respected assistant
district attorney for 20 years. He loves his wife, Laurie, and his son, Jacob. A shocking crime shatters their Massachusetts town and his fourteen-year-old son is charged with the murder of a fellow student.
This is a well-written, page-turning novel and a must read! ... Submitted by Gayle Smoley
Hana’s Suitcase by Karen Levine A true story tracing a suitcase on a 70-year journey. It arrives at a Holocaust education center in Tokyo from
Auschwitz. The book alternates between the questions asked by the Japanese children and the museum curator to reveal the heartbreaking story of a young Czech girl named Hana Brady.
This award winning book would make an excellent family read-and-discuss. ...Submitted by Jeanne Woodward

Hacksaw Ridge -Rescheduled from March
The true story of Desmond Doss who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified,
killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector to ever earn the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Sartell History on the Trolley
SARTELL CONNECTION MAY - AUG 2018 11
The River. The Mississippi River marks the eastern boundary of Le Sauk Township, where the city of Sartell stands - the river that explorer Zebulon Pike ascended in 1805 to secure treaties with the Native Americans. It is also the corridor that Henry Rowe Schoolcraft descended in 1832 after discovering the river’s source.
Native American History. According to an 1825 treaty, Watab Creek was established as a demarcation line between the warring Dakota and Ojibwe nations. A 100-yard section of the old “Indian Trail” still remains north of the creek’s mouth.
Oxcarts. Between 1845 and 1870, oxcart caravans plied their way through the township on their journeys between St. Paul and Winnipeg. A few oxcart ruts from the Wood Trail can still be seen near the site of the vanished village of Watab across the Mississippi in Benton County. Explorers called the future site of Sartell “Third Rapids”, a reference to the three sets of rough waters between St. Anthony (Minneapolis) and Sartell.
The Sartell Family. Massachusetts native Joseph B. Sartell immigrated to the future site of Sartell in 1854 where he erected a sawmill near the site of the future paper mill. Joseph and his wife, Lucinda, built a home-stead on Winnebago Prairie the next year. Many Sartell family descendants live in the community today.
N.P. Clarke. In the late 19th century, St. Cloud entre-preneur Nehemiah P. Clarke farmed 1,600 acres in Le Sauk Township. Clarke had a national reputation as a breeder of horses, cattle, and sheep. He called his short-horns “Meadow Lawn”, the name used for land south of Pinecone Road where patio homes stand today.
The Paper Mill. In 1905, construction began on both the Watab Pulp and Paper Company and the Sartell Dam that bridges the Mississippi. Both projects were completed in 1908, one year after the village of Sartell was incorporated. In 1914, a steel truss bridge, erected just below the Sartell Dam, replaced ferry service. The bridge, an important local landscape feature, still stands.
The DeZurik Family. Mathew DeZurik was a young millwright at the Watab Paper Mill when he invented several products that inspired him to open his own business. In 1932, DeZurik created a new business on the west side of the river across from the paper mill. Today, DeZurik valves are sold throughout the world.
Contemporary Sartell. Sartell’s greatest surge of population occurred between 1970 and the present. In 1970, Sartell was a village of 700. Today, the number exceeds 15,000. Part of the exhibit space could be used to showcase the modern city. An architectural exhibit might show older houses, contemporary structures, and the vintage style architecture along Pinecone Road.
Many people think Sartell is an extension of St. Cloud. This viewpoint implies that Sartell lacks its own history, a sense of place, or a culture with its own distinctive roots. I believe that Sartell does have a history, one that extends from the days of Native American habitation to today’s bustling modern city.
Building museum space for Sartell’s history is becoming more and more crucial. Many of Sartell’s historic features have vanished or soon will, including Sartell’s original downtown; the paper mill; and the iconic Fasen Round Barn. These and other physical features now exist solely in photographs, recorded histories, and memories held by local citizens.
If Sartell is to have a museum where its history can be displayed, organizers might consider the following events, persons, and features that define our history. In a museum, each item could be displayed with banners, photographs, artifacts, and other traditional means.
My Turn… Importance of Our Local History by Bill Morgan
Most small towns and cities across the state support a museum where a community’s heritage can be displayed. All kinds of artifacts today are stored in the homes of Sartell citizens.
Efforts should be made to collect, catalogue and select materials for displays.
