In Lahemaa (Land of Bays), located on the northern coast of Estonia, you will find stony and sandy seashores, picturesque bogs, pine forests, old-growth forests, cliff forests, alvars and rivers that have cut into the limestone cliff. The bog is a perfect example of this very typical Estonian land formation and its flora, which is quite unique elsewhere. The trail through the bog is 3.5 km long, and in the middle there is a spectacular viewing tower, where participants can enjoy the bird’s eye view of the route they have just walked through. The bus will meet the participants at the other end of the trail.

Next stop on the tour is Palmse manor, the first manor in Estonia that was restored as a complex to give a full overview of a typical Baltic manorial estate. Palmse is first mentioned in a written document in 1287, and all the buildings are under state protection as an architectural monument. The main house that we see today originates from the rebuilding ac-complished in 1782-1785. There you can see the old grandeur of the land owning nobility, the Baltic Germans, who lived in Estonia close to 700 years, and owned most of the land and peasants, despite the ruling powers. Here, the participants have a wonderful opportunity to join in an Estonian wine guessing game, where each person can guess the base of 5 local wines. By base, we mean the raw material of which the wines are made, as in Estonia no grapes are grown.

After tour of Palmse the group will discover the centuries-old Altja fisher-man village, a great example of the lifestyle that local Estonian peasants had as to opposed to the nobility. The group will enjoy a traditional lunch in the local tavern, also a typically Estonian place. After all, it was said that there were only two buildings in every community that mattered to the peasants – the church and the tavern, usually placed right next to each other for the convenience.

12:35 – 14:00: Palmse manor and local wine tasting

14:10 – 15:30: Altja fisherman village and lunch in a traditional tavern

After lunch in Altja the participants will continue to Vihula manor, where they will be taken on a tour full of experiences.

Vihula manor, an elegant and secluded estate, which dates from the 16th century, is a perfect escape from the bustling life of the city and a su-premely comfortable and luxurious place to stay. It is the first full-service manor resort in the Baltic countries. Vihula Manor is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Estonia, with its painstakingly renovated ensemble of historical buildings located in a picture-perfect balance with each other and with the surrounding nature.

The tour of the manor complex will give the participants an overview of the manor history, but it is also combined with additional treats. They will have several stops along the way, tasting and doing various things. For example, peppermint tea tasting, made from the herbs grown in manor’s herb garden, and tasting traditional freshly baked Estonian rye bread (or black bread) in the old watermill.

After the tour they will have a delicious dinner in the manor restaurant La Boheme, during which they can relax and think back on all the things ex-perienced that day. After the dinner the bus will take them back to Tallinn.

15:45 – 19:30: Vihula manor and tour of experiences (back in Tallinn around 19:30 o’clock)

Lauluväljak, or Song Festival Grounds, is a historic place where the Signing Revolution took place in the late 1980s, during which Estonia regained its independence from the Soviet regime. The stage, now a symbol of independence, unity, and the power of singing, was built in 1959, but the tradition of nationwide song festivals, that take place in every 5 years, dates back to 1869. The year 2014 is the year that sees another of those magnificent celebrations, this time themed “Touched by Time. The Time to Touch”.

The Soviet Legacy Tour

Duration: 14:00 – 18:00Minimum number of people: 25 paxMaximum number of people: 35 paxPrice per person: 30 EURPrice includes: Bus transfers, guide service and entrance to Patarei prison.

The tour takes you to many places in Tallinn that still remind us of the Soviet past. These places include examples of Soviet architecture, land-marks and monuments, but equally important are the memories and sto-ries about how it felt to live in the Soviet Estonia, the human aspect. The tour guarantees much laughter, but also some sadness over the darkest moments in the life of a small nation. The bus will take participants to the Olympic Yacht.

Harbour that was built for the 1980s Summer Olympic Games held in Moscow. Tallinn had the honour of hosting the sailing competitions of those games. Next stop will be in the TV tower, opened the same year, 1980. This was at the time one of the most impressive and remarkable buildings in the Soviet Union. The journey continues through Lasnamäe suburb, built during the Soviet times, that stands today as a prime exam-ple of Soviet architecture and way of life.

Next stop is by the sea and Linnahall – an impressive concrete structure, opened in 1980 as a sports centre that has so far not found a proper purpose or owner and is turning into a ruin under the harsh Northern weather conditions. From there it gets even more dramatic, with a visit to Patarei prison. This imposing, seaside complex in the Kalamaja district is now one of the best places in the world to catch a glimpse of Soviet-era prison life in all its dreariness. Originally opened as a sea fortress in 1840, it housed inmates from 1919 until 2004, and has been left virtually untouched since. Visitors can explore the hallways to see cells, work areas, exercise yards and the like.

Walk-ing along the path the guide will give an overview of Tallinn’s sea-related past, which will be a good intro-duction before entering the Seaplanes Harbour, which is the newest and the most innovative maritime muse-um in Europe; its Grand Opening took place on May 11, 2012. The seaplane hangars used as the museum main building are a unique masterpiece in the whole world, a real archi-tectural wonder. Built in 1916 and now carefully renovated. Inside the visitors will find some more unique things in the whole world: an original submarine from 1936 that is the oldest functioning submarine that has been in water for 75 years - lifted into the museum in 2012; and the one and only seaplane Short 184. In addition visitors will find other life-size maritime things under the water, above the water and over the sea in the sky. The exhibition is not so much a museum display but a real expe-rience - truly innovative, surprising, full of good design solutions, and interesting interactive activities. The new museum excellently combines both past and present, land and sea.
