INTRODUCTION TO THE LITURGY OF THE DAY
Last week the word “remain” was repeated over and over
in the second reading and the Gospel. This week the
word is “love.” In both his first letter and his Gospel,
John writes “love one another.” It is a command to all
Jesus’ disciples, from the apostles at the Last Supper to
all of us gathered around the table of the Lord today.
To love each other as we are loved by God is what we
are all called to do.
MARIAN FEASTS IN MAY AT SMDLP May is a month dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus. It’s also the month of Mother’s Day.
Catholics traditionally have May Crownings, when crowns of roses adorn a statue of Mary,
and boys and girls who just made their First Holy Communion wear the same outfits for the
occasion. Catholics sing Marian hymns, and in some places, outdoor processions take place; a
statue of Mary is carried through the streets. May 13, Mother’s Day, is the Feast of Our Lady
of Fatima (when Mary appeared to three shepherd children in Portugal, 1917) and May 31 is
the Feast of the Visitation (when Mary went to see her cousin Elizabeth, the mother of John
the Baptist).
At Santa Maria, we will have May crownings and the investiture of the brown scapular at the
5:00 Mass on May 5 and the 11:30 Mass on May 6. First Holy Communion is scheduled for
next weekend, Mother’s Day and the Feast of the Assumption at the 5:00 Mass and the 11:30
Mass. Check with children to see which Mass is “theirs”. Our Children’s Choir will also
provide the music for both the First Communion Masses.
MAY Month of the Blessed Virgin Mary
DO YOU KNOW WHY…..water is used to dilute wine before it is consecrated?
The use of water in the wine has been the source of a lot of questions over the centuries. Initially, it was simply the
action of preparing the wine for use. No civilized person, certainly no free person, would ever think of drinking wine
at full strength. It was always diluted with water. Over the centuries many meanings have been associated with this
gesture: it has been thought of as a sign of the two natures in one Christ by some and by others to be a reminder of
the blood and water that flowed from the side of Christ. In the end, it is what it is: a custom. GIRM 142, ION 107

This week’s FORMED
feature:
Did Jesus really rise from the dead? Major feature films such The Passion of the Christ and Risen, and books such as Bill O'Reilly's Killing Jesus, raise many questions about one of the greatest controversies in history--what really happened to the crucified body of Jesus of Nazareth? Using a popular question-and-answer format, this book examines the historical evidence concerning the fate of Jesus. Did Jesus really die on the Cross? If so, what became of his body? Was it stolen? Misplaced? Is the Resurrection a cleverly devised plot to found a new religion? Did the disciples of Jesus hallucinate? Is the Resurrection of Jesus a myth developed decades later, after the original disciples' experience of Jesus was distorted by a subsequent generation? Or did Jesus rise from the dead, as he promised and as his disciples came to believe and sacrifice their lives to proclaim? Carl Olson carefully weighs the evidence with in-depth analysis. Whether you are a believer, a skeptic, or something in between, be prepared to have your thinking challenged by this provocative and insightful book. Now that our participants have received their sacraments,
they are in the period called Mystagogy, a time period in
which we who have received sacraments all participate. It is a
time for us to live out our faith but also to learn more about
our faith. Father Daniel’s Adult Faith Formation sessions
are over for the school year, but there are other educational
opportunities available throughout the city or online. The
Archdiocese of Santa Fe has a wonderful library and they are
also offering a Summer Institute. Santa Maria de la Paz also
has a wonderful library full of much spiritual growth
material. We learn from our weekly participation at Mass as
well and we can do daily prayer and Bible reading.
