Our Mission:Rooted in Christ, touched by His love and mercy, the Saint John Berchmans community finds unity in its diversity, proclaims by Word, Sacrament, and service, that the Kingdom of God is at hand, and declares that all are welcome in this place.

Greetings St. John Berchmans Parish Community,

And happy First Communion weekend! What a joy filled occasion for our entire community, as we welcome our 2nd grade school students and religious education students to the Lord’s table!

Each year at this time, seeing our students prepare for, and participate fully in Mass for the first time, with such eagerness, with some trepidation and with all their hearts, I can’t help but recall my own First Holy Communion. As I watch our students, in their crisp suits and beautiful white Communion dresses process to the altar with family, I remember my own gift of grace, oh so many years ago.

As the fourth of five children, growing up in the seventies and eighties, I don’t remember a lot of my childhood. While most of my recollections are happy, they are also, for the most part, a vague blur. There are milestones and moments that do stand out more clearly, and my First Communion remains one of them. It may be because of “the green dress.” Let me explain.

I received my First Communion in May of 1979. In April that same year, I was a flower girl in my cousin’s wedding. The dress I wore was handmade. It was mint green, floor length, and trimmed in white lace. I was so proud to be in the wedding, and I was thrilled that I had a dress that matched those of the bridesmaids who I looked up to in awe – with their mint green, disco like dresses, their feathered hair, pastel eye shadow and frosted lips. My memories of that wedding are happy and crystal clear. The memory of the decision-making process that led up

to me wearing that same dress for my First Communion the next month is not so clear, and has been partly clouded by the years past and partly by the many times the story has been told and retold by family members over the years. My mom, until she died, swore up and down that the choice to wear the green dress was mine. She stood by her claim that I loved that dress so much, that I asked to wear it for my First Communion. I have always suspected that the fact that she had just paid for a handmade dress, which got just one wear, played into the decision much more strongly than my 8 year old opinion. Whatever the reason, it came to pass that in a sea of lacy white Communion dresses, I processed to the altar in a gown of green.

In the end, and maybe in spite of, maybe because of the green dress, I do remember feeling very special that day. It was a wonderful day, filled with the love of family and friends, who were all focused on me and supporting me in this important step in my journey of faith. My hope and prayer is that this weekend, our First Communicants feel special, too. No matter how they’re dressed, I hope that they feel God’s grace and the love of our Parish community, and that the feeling stays with them as they continue lives led by faith and inspired by Jesus.

With warmth and gratitude,

Peggy RoketPrincipal

School NewsSpringfield

Early April the SJB 7th and 8th graders spent an entire day exploring our state capital, Springfield, IL! We took an early morning Amtrak from Union Station and arrived at Springfield ready to go. Our first stop was a visit around the Lincoln Home National Historic Site. We toured his family home, which tells us a lot about our nation’s 16th President before he

and his family moved to the White House.

After a filling lunch, we walked over to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. We learned even more about Abraham Lincoln and our country at that time through various exhibits: from journeying through Lincoln’s pre-presidential years all the way to the White House. And, yes - playing with Lincoln logs!

Our last stop was the State Capitol. When we weren’t looking up at the magnificent dome, our group took a tour of the House and Senate Chambers from their galleries and saw the Governor’s Office, the Hall of Governors, and the former Chamber of the Illinois Supreme Court.

We then dodged raindrops to catch our Amtrak back home. Even after a full day of learning, ending with dinner in our train car, the 7th and 8th graders still had energy to spare! Thanks to the amazing Jr High Team: Ms Begley, Ms Copre & Mr Osselaer and our chaperones Carmen Rodriguez, Blanca Calderon and Janet Harrison.
