MISSION STATEMENT
With faith, hope, and love the people of St. Bernard's parish family are on a mission to
bring the gospel of Jesus to the Levittown Community and beyond.

Do you love me?
E– mail Father Ralph: [email protected]
There’s a cute and poignant moment in the musical Fiddler on the Roof
where the husband Tevye asks his wife of 25 years, “Golde, do you love me?”
and she responds, “For twenty-five years, I've washed your clothes, Cooked
your meals, Cleaned your house, Given you children, Milked the cow. After
twenty-five years, why talk about love right now?” And then she sings to the
audience, “Do I love him? For twenty-five years, I've lived with him, Fought
with him, Starved with him. For twenty-five years, my bed is his. If that's not
love, what is?”
Jesus asks the same question of Peter in today’s gospel. (John 21:1-19) “Peter,
do you love me?” And Peter responds that he does love Jesus. Jesus asks him a
second time; and then a third time. We can clearly figure out that Jesus is
letting Peter get past the guilt of denying him three times by offering the chance
for him to profess his love three times. And after each time Peter tells Jesus of
his love, Jesus tells him to “feed my sheep.”
Golde’s response to Tevye isn’t one of romance. Rather she lists the things
she’s done over the years to care for her husband. Love, it turns out, is more
about action than feelings. And Jesus wants Peter to act in the face of his love
for the Lord. There is little sense in saying “I love you” if there are no
corresponding actions.
So if Jesus asks YOU the question, “Do you love me?,” how do you answer?
And what does Jesus tell you to do to show your love? I suggest that this could
be a good prayer experience this week. Listen as Jesus asks you “Do you love
me?” Then respond to him. Then listen again as he reveals the ways he wants
you to express that love. His “feed my sheep” directive to Peter can be a
starting point for us as we listen to Jesus call us to put love into action by
caring for others.
Architects at Work!
This past week, our parish staff
got a first look at some
preliminary drafts of the office
layouts as we make plans to
move the rectory and
Clairvaux House offices to a
new central location in the
convent. We gave the
architects some initial feedback
and once the plans become
more solidified, we’ll publish
them for the parish to see. I’ll
be interested in meeting with a
committee of parishioners with
experience in different building
trades to evaluate the plans.
Easter Sacraments
Please spend some extra time
in prayer for the young people
who will be confirmed and
those receiving communion for
the first time during the Easter
season.
These sacraments are a new
beginning of a deeper
relationship with God and the
church family. Keep
encouraging the families of
these young people to join you
at Mass on Sunday throughout
the weeks ahead.

The Rosarians will meet on Monday,
May 6 in the prayer room of the
church at 12:30. The month of May
is dedicated to Mary, so praying the
Rosary together is a wonderful way
to honor her. We should always first
thank God for all our blessings, and
then ask for help for ourselves and
others. Pope Francis, all bishops, priests (especially
Father Ralph, Father Joe, and Father Innocent) and
religious, including the sisters from St. Bernard’s, all
those who protect us; the military, police officers and
firemen, are always included in our prayers. PEACE
everywhere is at the top of every one’s prayer list.
Please come join us as we pray WITH each other and
FOR each other. All women of the parish are welcome.

SERVING LEVITTOWN AND BEYOND
A few months ago, the Levittown Community
Council sponsored a collection of items for
ReWearAble, an initiative of Bethpage-based ACLD
(Adults and Children with Learning Disabilities).
The mission of ACLD is to provide opportunities for
children and adults with autism, learning and
developmental disabilities to pursue inviable lives,
increase independence and foster supportive
relationships within the community.
St. Bernard’s parishioner Aimee Keegan is
Director of Development and Community Relations
for ACLD. When she spoke about the ReWearAble
project at an LCC meeting at which Pastoral Associate
Diane Vella was present, a plan began to take shape
for St. Bernard’s to assist with this amazing initiative
that is changing the lives of many adults with
disabilities.
The tag-line of ReWearAble is “Reuse-Rewear
-Recycle.” ReWearAble not only collects clothing
and other items for re-suing, re-wearing, and re-
cycling, but it employs people with disabilities, thus
providing meaningful jobs and support for people who
might otherwise find it difficult to get jobs. The em-
ployees collect the items, sort them, and prepare them
for sale to buyers. They receive a paycheck, and the
satisfaction of having done meaningful work and con-
tributing to the good of society.
A few weeks ago, Aimee gave Diane a tour of the Re-
WearAble facilities, where she was able to see the op-
eration and meet some of the people who are the dedi-
cated employees. She was impressed with the
operation, and was delighted to hear the stories of
some of the people who work there, and how their
lives have been changed for the better as a result of
their jobs. Diane promised that St. Bernard’s would
hold a drive to support their efforts.
On Sunday, May 19, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30
p.m., the ReWearAble collection truck will be in St.
Bernard’s parking lot to accept your donations. Re-
WearAble accepts the following items: clothes,
shoes, handbags, bedding, belts, hats, scarfs and
gloves, household items- such has towels , rugs, etc.,
toys home decorations, jewelry. RewearAble does
not accept furniture, electronics, books, appliances,
cookware or any breakable items such as china sets.
(All items donated to ReWearAble are deductible for income tax
purposes at their present fair market value. I.R.S. code places
the responsibility for estimating the “fair market value” upon the
donor.)

Book Discussion
Cry, the Beloved Country, the most famous and
important novel in South Africa’s history, was an
immediate worldwide
bestseller in 1948. It is the
deeply moving story of the
Zulu pastor Stephen
Kumalo and his son,
Absalom, set against the
background of a land and a
people riven by racial
injustice. Remarkable for
its lyricism, unforgettable
for character and incident,
here is a classic work of
love and hope, courage
and endurance, born of the
dignity of man.
Join your fellow parishioners for an informal discussion
of Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton on
Wednesday May 15 at 10 AM in the St. Bernard Parish
Center.

donations which they shared with us. They are Megan,
Charlie and Delilah…and they came with two moms—
Mary and Dana! Thanks, Brownies and moms!
We love to share those wonderful cookies!

Thank you from Annunciation House: Just before Easter, we received this letter from
Annunciation House, to whom we sent the proceeds of
our “Souper Bowl of Caring” donation.
Dear Kind Donors,
“WOW!!! Thank you so much for your extremely
generous contribution in the amount of $5400,
representing money raised during the “Souper Bowl of
Caring.” Thank you for the informative letter and the
pictures, etc. What a wonderful group of KIDZ.”
“We are extremely grateful for your support, especially
at this time. Starting in 2018, those seeking our help
have been unparalleled for Annunciation House. A
growing number of people from Guatemala, Honduras
and El Salvador, among others, have left their countries,
often fleeing persecution and extreme violence, and have
walked hundreds of miles in search of a safer place for
their children and families. Thank you again, and may
God bless you abundantly.”

Liturgy Corner
First Reading: In between the event described in last
Sunday’s reading and today’s text, the Apostles have
been arrested, imprisoned, and mirac-
ulously released to resume their proc-
lamation of the Gospel. As todays’
reading begins, they are apprehended
again. Always, there is the shadow of
the Cross - Jesus’, the disciples, and
our own. Would that we, too, could
rejoice in our sufferings for the sake of
Jesus.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 30 is a
song of praise celebrating God’s deliverance of his peo-
ple and, particularly in today’s liturgy, of the Apostles.
Surely the words of the psalmist sustained them, giving
them courage and hope in all they would endure.
Second Reading: In a vision John, the Christian proph-
et, sees God’s heavenly throne surrounded by the elders,
the living creatures, and countless angels. They sing
praise to the victorious Lamb of God. All creatures in
Third Sunday of Easter
May 5, 2019
heaven and on earth join in the triumphal hymn.
Gospel: The Apostles have returned
to their former occupation as fisher-
man - in this instance, with little suc-
cess. Jesus gifts them with a miracu-
lous catch of fish, then nourishes
them with food for body and spirit.
The disciples know, without a doubt,
that it is the Lord. The longer option
includes Jesus’ triple questioning of
Peter’s love for him (paralleling his
earlier threefold denial). Peter like-
wise receives a threefold commission to shepherd Jesus’
flock. Peter’s destiny is the focus of the final verses. His
martyrdom, like Jesus’ own Death, would glorify God.
Today’s Gospel ends with the command and invitation
to “Follow me”. The way of the disciple can be none
other than the way of Jesus.

April showers might bring May flowers,
but our continual wet and chilly weather
makes us even more enthusiastic about our
plans for a larger lobby on our church
building. No longer will families need to
stand out in the drizzle prior to funerals.
Our first communicants won’t need to run
between the raindrops. We can talk with
each other before and after Mass even if
the weather is wet or cold or hot.
One of the features we are designing will
be a weekend reception desk where people
can get information, register for the parish,
get Mass cards, etc. without having to
leave the building. There will be a seating
area where people can wait for rides and
an overhang outside to shield people from
the elements when waiting to be picked up.
A year ago students from Division Ave
High School and MacArthur High School
prepared some designs for our new lobby.
These are now being shared with our
architects and can be seen at our website.
20/20
Thanks to the folks who have been taking us up on our
suggestion of pledging $20 for 20 months. It’s easy to
“set and forget” if you pledge online at
Faith Direct.Go to:
https://membership.faithdirect.net/NY272
and sign up to give in our Let’s Build! Campaign or
send in the form below.
Whether you’re a long-time parishioner or you’re
visiting for a Confirmation or Communion celebration,
we welcome your participation in our campaign to
renovate the parish campus.
FUN FACT: With 5000 families in our parish if every family
gave $400 just once, we’d have $2 million for our project!
Yes! Sign me up for a $20 donation for 20 months.
Please contact me for the best way to set this up.

We’re still a few months away from designing our new
space. So if you’re visiting from another church and your
church has a nice lobby, or if you are traveling to other
churches, especially when on vacation in the months
ahead, why not take a photo of their lobbies and send them
to Father Ralph? We’re happy to learn things from the
experiences of other churches and their use of a gathering
space.
Thank you to everyone who has pledged so far...
