The Sixth Sunday of Easter

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, this church opens wide her doors and offers welcome to all who sin and need

and to whosoever will come. Jesus taught us that if our brother has something against us, we ought to go and be

reconciled to him before we do anything else in gathered worship. Please do that without delay if necessary.

Hearing enhancement devices available – please ask an usher

Children’s worship folders are available on the literature rack in the narthex.

CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN

Minister: If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins,

God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let us

confess our sins against God and our neighbor—

People: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by

what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole

heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in

your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

DECLARATION OF ABSOLUTION

Minister: Hear the Word of the Gospel: “Christ has died for our sins and been raised for our justification.” All

you who repent of your sin and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ for your salvation, rejoice and be glad

and give glory to the Lord who has taken away all of your sins in the name of the Father, and the Son,

and the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen. Minister: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

People: the Maker of heaven and earth.

Minister: O Lord, open our lips,

People: and our mouth will declare your praise.

CHILDREN’S ANTHEM Children’s and Youth Choirs

Now the Green Blade Rises – Trad. French, arr. Shirley W. McRae

Now the green blade rises from the buried grain,

Wheat that in the dark earth many days has lain.

Love lives again, that with the dead has been,

Love is come again like wheat that springeth green.

In the grave they laid him, Love who had been slain,

Thinking that he never would awake again.

Laid in the earth like grain that sleeps unseen:

Love is come again like wheat that springeth green.

Forth he came at Easter like the risen grain,

Jesus who for three days in the grave had lain;

Quick from the dead my risen Lord is seen:

Love is come again like wheat that springeth green.

When our hearts are wintry, grieving or in pain.

Jesus’ touch can call us back to life again,

Fields of our hearts that dead and bare have been;

Love is come again like wheat that springeth green.

(John M. C. Crum)

CHILDREN’S PRAYER Children’s Combined Choirs

Jesus’ Hands Were Kind Hands – Sue Ellen Page

Jesus’ hands were kind hands, doing good for all.

Healing pain and sickness, blessing children small.

Washing tired feet and saving those who fall,

Jesus’ hands were kind hands, doing good to all.

Take my hands, Lord Jesus, let them work for you.

Make them strong and gentle, kind in all I do.

Let me watch you, Jesus, ‘til I’m gentle too,

‘Til my hands are kind hands, quick to work for you.

(Margaret Cropper)

The Biblical significance of eating in God’s presence can be noted from the Garden of Eden in Genesis to the Garden-City in Revelation. The

Lord Jesus instituted the New Covenant at a meal – the meal – as he broke bread and shared the cup with his disciples. The Church has always

repeated this meal as Christ and his Apostles command, the culmination of worship in God’s presence and a bold proclamation of Christ’s

death until he comes. We invite all baptized Christians to come to this table, his table, and to rejoice with us in God’s grace given to us in

Christ. If you recognize yourself as a repentant and believing sinner, trusting in Christ’s shed blood for the forgiveness of your sins, then come.

Baptized children are admitted to the Table upon an age-appropriate profession of faith in Christ. Let us draw near, then, with thankful and

reverent hearts and receive by faith the body and blood of Christ, a true nourishment for our souls. If you have any question about whether or

not you should receive communion, please ask one of our elders.

The Service of the Table

CORPORATE CONFESSION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

Unison: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the

Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended

into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at

the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and

the dead;

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness

of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

Minister: Christ is risen!

People: He is risen indeed!

Minister: Filled with the hope and joy of the resurrection, let us offer one another a sign of peace.

Members of the congregation greet one another with a sign of friendship such as the ancient words which the church has used over the

centuries, “The peace of Christ be with you,” and the response, “And also with you.”

Minister: Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendor, and the majesty;

for everything in heaven and on earth is yours.

PRAYER OF DEDICATION

Minister: Our Glorious God and Father, you have shown your great power in raising the Lord Jesus Christ from

the dead. By his death you brought us life, and in his resurrection you have secured our hope. We

acknowledge that you have created us, redeemed us, and will bring us to yourself, for from you, and

through you, and to you are all things. Because we are wholly yours and so that the glad tidings of

this resurrection might be made known in all places, we offer now these tithes and our offerings to

you. Receive them O Lord, and distribute them according to your wisdom for the honor of your name,

and all through the power of Jesus Christ our Lord.

People: Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

Minister: The Lord be with you!

People: And also with you! Minister: Lift up your hearts!

People: We lift them up to the Lord! Minister: Let us give thanks to our Lord God!

People: It is good and right to do so!

Minister: It is very good and right that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you, O Holy Lord,

Father Almighty, Everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord; but chiefly we are bound to praise

you for the glorious resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord; for he is the very Paschal Lamb,

which was offered for us and has taken away the sins of the world. By his death he has destroyed

death, and by his rising to life again he has restored to us everlasting life. Therefore, with angels and

archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we praise and magnify your glorious name,

evermore praising you and singing:

LESSONS

Psalm 67 1God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us; Selah.

2That thy way may be known upon earth,

thy saving health among all nations. 3Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee.

4O let the nations be

glad and sing for joy: for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Selah. 5Let the people

praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee. 6Then shall the earth yield her increase; and God, even our own God, shall

bless us. 7God shall bless us; and all the ends of the earth shall fear him. (KJV)

Acts 16:9-15 9And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to

Macedonia and help us.” 10

And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding

that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. 11

So, setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Samothrace,

and the following day to Neapolis, 12

and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a

Roman colony. We remained in this city some days. 13

And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to the riverside,

where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together. 14

One

who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God.

The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. 15

And after she was baptized, and her household as

well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she

prevailed upon us. (ESV)

John 16:23-33 23

In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give

it to you. 24

Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. 25

“I have

said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but

will tell you plainly about the Father. 26

In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the

Father on your behalf; 27

for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from

God. 28

I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech!

30Now we know that you know all

things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” 31

Jesus answered them,

“Do you now believe? 32

Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home,

and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33

I have said these things to you, that in me you may

have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (ESV)

Sermon Lesson: Revelation 21:1-4, 9-14, 21-27 1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no

more. 2

And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her

husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell

with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear

from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former

things have passed away.” 9Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying,

“Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10

And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain,

and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, 11

having the glory of God, its radiance like a

most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12

It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels,

and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed– 13

on the east three gates, on the north

three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. 14

And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on

them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 21

And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold,

transparent as glass. 22

And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23

And the

city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24

By its light

will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25

and its gates will never be shut by day―and

there will be no night there. 26

They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. 27

But nothing unclean will ever

enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life. (ESV)
