Then I was really tired and took a nap. I usually don’t take naps. My mom asked what was wrong. I don’t know what is wrong.

I was still thirsty and tired and grumpy today so Mom and Dad took me to the Emergency Room.

I was really scared because I knew something was wrong, but the nice doctor and nurse took care of me. They said I was dehydrated. This means my body didn’t have enough water in it to keep it working right. I had also lost a lot of weight. They took my blood to see what was wrong.

They said my blood glucose was over 800 mg/dL. This is REALLY high. Bloodglucose, also called blood sugar, means sugar in the blood. They gave me medicine in a needle to get my blood sugar lower. Me, Mom, and Dad were all a little scaredbecause this was new and we didn’t know what it meant.

I ate lunch because I was hungry, then a doctor came in to talk to us. I had to take medicine in a needle again before I ate lunch. They called the medicine insulin.

The doctor told me my blood sugar was high because I have diabetes. This means that my body cannot process sugar normally and doesn’t make enough insulinanymore. I don’t really know what that means yet, but I am scared. Everyone told me I will be fine, but I am still scared.

My mom told me it might help if I write down what I am feeling and what is happening, so I am.

After lunch, the nurse came in and took my blood sugar with a machine, she called this a blood glucose meter. My blood sugar was coming down, it was 328 mg/dL. I am still learning what these numbers mean. My doctor told me I could go home if my blood sugar came down to 200 mg/dL. I also need to know how to take my insulin before I can go home. I have to see my diabetes nurse on Monday to learn more about diabetes.

Before I left the hospital the nurse brought in two types of insulin and showed me how to inject insulin using an orange. She gave me a blood glucose meter so I could test my blood sugar at home.

At bedtime I have to take 5 units of one kind of insulin. Before meals I have to take 2-4 units of the other insulin. The number of units is based on how much I eat and how high my blood sugar is. All of us were a little scared but Mom and Dad told me everything was OK and this wasn’t my fault. I was really glad to go home. I wanted to sleep in my own bed.

When I got home I was really tired and went to bed. I think Mom was worriedbecause she slept in the room with me. I think she checked my blood sugar in the middle of the night, but I was too tired to remember. I still need to learn a lot about diabetes. I will write again about what I learn.
