I have always found this excerpt from the U.S. bishops’ pastoral letter, Stewardship: A Disci- ple’s Response particularly powerful: “Jesus’ call is urgent. He does not tell people to follow him at some time in the future but here and now — at this moment, in these circumstances. There can be no delay” (SDR, p. 14). As stewardship leaders, we must constantly ask ourselves these questions: What is our particular moment of life personally and in our faith community? What circumstances must we take into consideration as we call one another to live and grow as stewards? In the first chapter of the bishops’ letter, they help us to recognize that embracing stewardship is about living out our particular vocations. We discern Christ’s call for us in the context of the community of believers; we respond to the urgent call of Christ. This is why it is very important that we begin forming our children and teens as stewards, so that they will recognize and re- spond to God’s grace in their lives, understand themselves as disciples of Jesus Christ from a very early age, and reflect on their response to Christ’s call and their many blessings as good stewards. There is much evidence that such real-life, day-to-day faith formation is needed if our children are to remain actively engaged in a life of faith within the faith community as young adults. In the United States over 30 percent of adults under the age of 30 are now unaffiliated. The major- ity of these young people leave their congregation before age 24. Young adults tell us they are looking for a meaningful way of life; they want to contribute to something that matters; they need to know that religion is not at odds with science, but rather, that faith brings a larger per- spective to what is learned through science. They want and need to learn from the witness of adults who are actively living as faith-filled people in the world. Stewardship provides so much that our young people need! Forming people to live their vocations as disciples who live as stewards is a gift beyond what most of us can ask or imagine. -International Catholic Stewardship Council

Pentecost: The Church’s Birthday by Rev. Lawrence Rice, CSP Each year the Church celebrates 50 days of Easter, culminating at the feast of Pentecost. Pentecost marks the occasion of God’s sending the Holy Spirit upon Jesus’ disciples after his resurrection. Before Pentecost, the disciples were unsure of what they were to do next, and spent most of their time in hiding. After Pentecost, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, they understood their mission to spread the Good News of Jesus, and they had the courage to come out of hiding and speak openly about who Jesus was, and what he had accomplished by his dying and rising. Because Pentecost brought the disciples this clarity of mission, it is regarded as the founding feast of the Christian Church. Before Pentecost, the disciples of Jesus are tentative and disorganized. After Pente-cost, they are a people with a mission, who perceive themselves as spiritually and sacramentally con-nected to the risen Christ. You can read the story of the Church’s first days in the Acts of the Apostles. Today, celebrations of Pentecost still center on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and the power of those gifts to both draw people together, and to send them forth to spread the word. For those of you who are fond of making lists, those gifts of the Holy Spirit are: Wisdom, Knowledge, Understanding, Fortitude, Good Counsel, Piety, and Fear of the Lord. Of course, one of the remarkable elements of the story of the first Pentecost was the miracle of under-standing, in which everyone in the diverse crowd in Jerusalem hears the disciples speaking in the listen-ers’ own language. This unique event is sometimes commemorated at masses for Pentecost Sunday by having people read sections of the story in a variety of different languages represented in the congrega-tion. It’s a reminder that although we’ve heard the story before, we have inherited the mission of those first disciples.

As we approach the end of the Easter Season to celebrate the birth of our church, Pentecost re-minds us of the beauty in diversity and unity within our universal Church. Many different lan-guages, nationalities, and customs were brought together that day through the Holy Spirit with a mission: Go and spread the Good News of Christ.

In that spirit, we extend an invitation on Pentecost Sunday inviting the different cultures and customs of our parishioners to share how the Holy Spirit inspires them. Do you have special music, dances, foods, or other forms of art you display on Pentecost?

These are evangelization tools that highlight our love for God and the joy His Son brings into our lives. Would you create an art piece or perform, sharing what inspires you and kindles the fire of love in us for Jesus and His Church?

These will be on display after the 8am, 11 am, and 1:30 pm Masses on Pentecost Sunday, June 4th. Stop by the front by the Jesus Statue for a short celebration of our church with cake and goodies. If you have a performance to share, please email Linda Carbone at [email protected]. If you have an art piece to share, please drop it off in the church atrium be-fore Mass on Pentecost Sunday.

See you then!!

Sincerely, Deacon Bob O’Connor Linda Carbone and Your Liturgy Committee Pentecost Petitions: If you speak another language we would love for you to read one or more of the petitions in that language during Mass on Pentecost. For more information, please contact Debbie in the office at 610 681 6137 or at [email protected].

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
