Administrator’s Perspective

Father John R. Rushofsky [email protected] Pastor 412 364 8999

A New Position A few weeks ago we announced that we were restructuring our Liturgy and Music Ministry so that we could provide a more unified liturgical program in all four parishes as well as reduce our payroll.

After bidding farewell to two organists, we have created a new position: Associate Director of Liturgy. This position has the awesome responsibility of coordinating the liturgical activities in all four parishes. This would include, among many other duties:

Tracking and ordering supplies, such as altar wine, hosts, candles, incense & charcoal;

Overseeing the care of liturgical materials, such as altar linens, vestments, vessels (chalices, ciboria, patens, monstrances), thuribles

Keeping in an orderly manner all liturgical texts, such as Lectionar ies, Roman Missals, ritual books for all sacraments

Coordinating art and environment for each church, including flowers and other seasonal displays

Overseeing and coordinating sacristans in each church, substituting when one is unavailable, as well as other liturgical ministries

Collaborating with the Directory of Liturgy and Music Ministry under the overall direction of the pastor/administrator in planning, organizing, and overseeing all liturgies and other devotions

We welcome David Dashiell to this position. David comes to us from Nashville, Tennessee, with his wife Joanne. He begins June 3, and we will give him our usual warm and enthusiastic greeting.

In Other News: Congratulations to the 130 young men and women of our North Hills Catholic Community who recently received the sacrament of Confir-mation. St. Athanasius and St. Teresa had a combined service with Bishop William Winter confirming 47 on May 10, and at St. Sebastian, 83 were con-firmed by Bishop David Zubik on May 16. We keep these newly confirmed in our prayers….stay tuned for more news….

Something to think about: “In any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.” - Theodore Roosevelt

Sixth Sunday of Easter As we get closer to Pentecost, this is a good time for us to consider the role the Holy Spirit plays in our lives. Jesus teaches his disciples that they will be able to rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance and instruction. We know this is true because in Acts we see the leaders of the church trusting the Holy Spirit to guide them in deciding what to require of Gentile converts. As we listen to God’s word today, let us recall the gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. Just like the early Church, may we rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance and instruction as the people of the Neighbors North Catholic Community. May these spiritual gifts help us as we continue to create a new parish.

Parish Social Ministry

Catholic Social Teaching With over 2,000 years of history, there is hardly a topic that the Catholic Church has not addressed. Seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching have emerged over the years, based on numerous papal encyclicals. They are: The life and dignity of the human person; the call to family and community; human rights

and responsibilities; the preferential option for the poor and vulnerable; the dignity of work and the rights of workers; solidarity; care for God’s creation.

Any one of these topics might seem simple and straightforward on the surface, but can really be quite complicated. Issues of life and dignity of the human person immediately lead us to think of the pro-life stances on abortion. But dignity of life also leads us to address human trafficking and racism. Pornography, the death penalty, and end of life care are other issues of the dignity of the human person. Each of these topics has been addressed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. We are bombarded with information and opinions in the media, and usually in the form of a 30 second sound byte. The Church clearly articulates its view in support of life. You can access the Catechism at usccb.org/flipbooks/catechism.

Genesis Baby Bottle Campaign: It is not too late to pick up a Genesis Baby Bottle Bank, located in the basket at St. Sebastian Church entrances, and fill it with coins or cash or check. Please return it to the bassinet in the narthex by June 9. All money collected supports Genesis of Pittsburgh’s life-affirming mission of assisting pregnant women in need.

Ascension Thursday: It is 9 days from Ascension Thursday until Pentecost. The word novena come from the Latin word for 9. There are many special prayers and ways to prepare for Pentecost. There are dozens of prayers to the Holy Spirit—find a prayer to the Holy Spirit that speaks to you and pray it each day, for 9 days.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul: In the Gospel today, Jesus says to us “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” Through your donations to St. Vincent de Paul, you have brought peace to those who were in need of food, assistance with paying their rent, and paying utility bills. May you be blessed with peace, knowing that you have made a difference.

Food Pantry Needs: Green beans (not French beans), tea, juice, pears, jar pasta sauce, spaghetti, baked beans, beef stew, and condiments. Please drop off in the food collection bin in the St. Sebastian Church narthex. Thank You!

Pentecost Vigil: A Pentecost Vigil will be held at St. Paul Cathedral on Saturday June 8th. Bishop David Zubik will be the celebrant for the 6:00 PM Vigil Mass. A Festival of Praise, with Bishop Zubik presiding along with Father Levi Hartle and the Holy Apostles Praise Band, will begin at approximately 7:30 PM. Adoration, Healing Ministry (with Patrick & Joy Campbell and Father Mike Ackerman) and a Eucharistic Procession will follow with Benediction at Midnight. Confessions and prayer ministry will be available throughout the evening. Come and go as you please. For more information, go to diopitt.org/events/pentecost-vigil, or contact Jim Zern 412-818-3226 or [email protected]

Faith Formation

Today’s Gospel T h e d i s c i p l e s g o t h r o u gh a

transformation after the resurrection to

the time of Pentecost. The more they

experience the risen Jesus, the more

they turn from despair into persons of

great hope. The resurrection of Christ challenged

them as it challenges us to believe, precisely, that

there are surprises hidden at the heart of any

scream, tear or cry. Light does triumph over

darkness, love over selfishness, justice over

oppression, peace over chaos, and fulfilment over

hunger.

So how and where do we experience the Risen

Jesus today? Like the Apostles, how can we spend

more time Him, learn from Him and get used to

the fact that he is indeed Risen? Taking our cue

from the readings, we experience the Risen Jesus in

prayer especially in the breaking of the bread at

Mass, in the words of scripture, and in each

other. He is here—He dwells among us!

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!

Incarnation Parish needs church office volunteers. Volunteers would answer the phone and door, takes messages, receive and sort mail, and perform occasional light clerical duties such as stuffing envelopes. A positive attitude and a warm smile together with good communication skills are key. Volunteers are needed Tuesdays and Fridays between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM. You will be asked to agree to a regular “shift,” e.g., Tuesday from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Attire is casual, but suitable to a church environment. You may bring a book, magazine, knitting for when you’re not busy. Interested? Please call the parish at (412)931-2911 and leave your name, phone number, and the best time to call. THANK YOU!

Readings of the week:

Peace I Leave With You; My Peace I Give To You – As the Church prepares to celebrate the Ascension of Jesus into heaven and the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles at Pentecost, we encounter today’s Gospel which is a source of great life and hope. In the course of this brief passage Jesus speaks of he and the Father dwelling with those who love them and of the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, being sent to teach them, and then he bestows his peace on them, telling them not to be troubled or afraid. The realities this Gospel presents mean a great deal in our own lives as we strive to follow the example of the disciples and be faithful followers of Jesus today. To know that the Lord dwells with us means that we are never alone and always have God’s protection and guidance. To know that the Lord sends His Spirit as our Advocate means that he moves in living and effective ways to provide for us. To know that the Lord bestows his peace upon us means that as we trust in him our anxiety and worry can be no more. All of these gifts are important as the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative continues to take shape in our parishes and groupings. As we strive to do the work in the Lord in light of the gifts he has given us we can trust in his guidance and peace. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
