(#9U895312) By Ken McDowell Sports Editor LAKEWOOD History was made at Sterling High School (SHS) last weekend in the Class 3A State Track and Field Meet at Jeffco Stadium in the both the girl’s and boy’s events. In the boy’s meet junior Victor Zimmerman-Ferri became the first athlete at SHS to win back-to-back Class 3A state titles in the pole vault. On Thursday Zimmerman- Ferri topped a personal best height of 14-6 to claim the state title. In the girl’s Class 3A State Meet, junior Kylie Chavez also inked her name in the SHS track and field history books by becoming the first athlete to win 2 state titles in one season and 3 overall. Chavez won the state title in the triple jump with a personal best distance of 36-11. She also emerged as state champion in the long jump with another personal best distance of 17-7. As a freshman Chavez won the state title in the triple jump with a distance of 17-5, and her most recent title gives her 3 in her career. “It’s incredible to win 2 events at state,” Chavez said after her most recent accomplishments. “There’s so much competition at state that it’s extremely difficult to win, so I feel very proud and accomplished. “As for my keys to success, I just work hard and try to improve every jump and meet. I trust and use the guidance of my coaches to reach my goals.” In last year’s meet Zimmerman- Ferri won the state title with a mark of 13-6. He is also the fifth Tiger to ever win the state in the pole vault. Zimmerman-Ferri was, to say the last, excited about repeating as the 3A state champ and compared this year’s feat with last season’s. “It feels awesome winning state again,” he said, “however I wouldn’t say this time was harder. “The competition was definitely better so I felt like I had so much pressure on me to repeat and I didn’t want to let anyone down.” Zimmerman-Ferri added that when things got tough at state, he leaned on a couple of friends. “There was a point in the competition where I went down to my third attempt at a semi-early height and if (teammate) Austin Chavez wasn’t by my side I have no doubt the pressure would have got to me and I’d be out of the competition,” he recalled. “Between Austin and Coach Randy Henderson, I think I do very little towards my own success. It may be an individual event but I certainly didn’t get here on my own.” Sterling Coach Cameron Frank had high praise for both of her athletes. “First off, Kylie is a beast!” she said. “That girl will do anything she puts her mind to. She has no limits and she is the athlete with the most state titles to her name and she isn’t finished yet. I am so proud of her dedication and hard work, and to top it off she has the most class of any athlete I have seen.” Frank added that dedication to pole vaulting is a big reason why Zimmerman-Ferri has been at the top of his field. “As for Victor, he has the heart to continue his success,” she said. “He eats, sleeps and breaths pole vault. As soon as we finished last weekend he was asking for more workouts and when we can start Zimmerman-Ferri, Chavez lead SHS teams with state titles Junior Victor Zimmerman-Ferri pole vaults his way to a second straight Class 3A state title.
