Welcome to BayCon 2019Welcome Players of BayCon 2019,

Your quarter has been accepted and the Master Programmer would like to take a moment of your time and welcome you to the extravaganza.

This year's theme, Insert Coin to Continue, takes us on a romp through the experiences of my youth, and the foundation upon which I built my personal love of science fiction—the same time period in which a great number of our guests and fans have grown up, and can remember with a rose-colored fondness. I hope that you have brought a lot of quarters to line up on the glass.

This weekend we have invited several amazing Guests of Honor to join our celebration. David Brin graciously accepted our invitation as Writer Guest of Honor. His accomplishments as a futurist and science fiction writer speak for themselves. We are truly pleased to have him.

Our Artist Guest of Honor, Gary Villarreal, works as a concept artist with the game developer Super Bit Machine. In the words of former BayCon Guest of Honor John Picacio, Gary's artwork will be sure to "melt your faces" (in a good way). Please stop by the Art Show to get a glimpse for yourself. He'll also be doing a live drawing during the convention, which I strongly encourage you to attend. You won't be disappointed.

Wanda Kurtçu joins us as Fan Guest of Honor. What can I say? I've known Wanda for years and cannot be more excited to have her onboard as a celebrated member of fandom. She has been a regular BayCon guest for years, and has also been a panelist and guest at several other local conventions. Her contributions to local fandom speak volumes. If you run into Dr. Wanda (that's right, she's got a PhD!), strike up a conversation. Ask her about the Star Trek episode she wrote, or the screenplay she's working on, or Taiko drumming. She's a great, inspiring person.

Toastmaster for this year is JC Arkham. If you've seen any of the marketing material for BayCon this year, this dude's the one responsible. He was also the art director for Worldcon 76 last year in San Jose. You're going to hear a lot from this guy over the course of the convention, so I'm not going to spoil any more for you.

I am pleased to welcome all of our usual suspects back for another year. I would also like to welcome the Royal

Mantacoran Navy, making its usual docking inside of our space. Please feel free to stop by and say "Hi."

This year we have also partnered with the local gaming convention KublaCon to provide additional value for our members, and the ability to enjoy both conventions during the weekend. Our partnership with the San Mateo Marriott is as good as ever. Fresh off their recent remodel, the open bar area and resturant are great places to meet with new friends and to catch up with old ones.

Our Charity this year is the Computer History Musuem, which is obviously a perfect fit for our theme. Attend our Charity Casino on Friday to help raise money towards protecting our digital heritage, or stop by one of

our Charity Auctions to bid on some really cool donated swag to benefit the charity. To find out more about the Computer History Museum, skip forward a few pages in this book.

Before I bore you to death, I will end this letter. I hope that you enjoy this year and look forward to meeting and talking with all of you. Please feel free to catch me in the hall.

Writer Guest of Honor • David BrinDavid Brin is a scientist, inventor, and New York

Times bestselling author. With books translated into 25 languages, he has won multiple Hugo, Nebula, and other awards. A film directed by Kevin Costner was based on David’s novel The Postman, with other works under option. In Earth and Existence he explores near future trends that may transform our world.

As a scientist/futurist, David is seen frequently on television shows such as The ArchiTechs, Universe, and Life After People, with frequent appearances on PBS, BBC and NPR. He has consulted for original shows like Ascension, Seven Days, and Century City.

Brin is in-demand to speak about future trends, keynoting for IBM, GE, Google, Microsoft, Procter & Gamble, SAP, Microsoft, Qualcomm, the Mauldin Group, and Mitre Research, all the way to think tanks, public agencies, intelligence services and the White House. (http://www.davidbrin.com/speaker.html)

With degrees from Caltech and the University of California-San Diego, Dr. Brin serves on advisory panels ranging from astronomy and NASA's Innovative & Advanced Concepts program (NIAC) to others dealing with artificial intelligence, nanotech, SETI, national defense to technological ethics. His nonfiction book The Transparent Society: Will Technology Make Us Choose Between Privacy and Freedom? explores the dangers of secrecy and loss of privacy in our modern world. It garnered the prestigious Freedom of Speech Prize from the American Library Association. (http://www.davidbrin.com )

Brin also received the California Library Association's Zoia Horn Intellectual Freedom Award, The Potomac Institute's 2015 Navigator Award for public service, and the first annual National Endowment for the Humanities/Hannah Arendt Center Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Bard College. 2015. Brin's scientific work covers an eclectic range of topics, from astronautics, astronomy, and optics

to alternative dispute resolution and the role of neoteny in human evolution. His Ph.D in Physics from UCSD—the University of California at San Diego (the lab of nobelist Hannes Alfven)—followed a masters in optics and an undergraduate degree in astrophysics from Caltech. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the California Space Institute and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. His patents directly confront some of the faults of old-fashioned screen-based interaction, aiming to improve the way human beings converse online.

David's science fictional Uplift Universe explores a future when humans

genetically engineer higher animals like dolphins to become equal members of our civilization. He also recently tied up the loose ends left behind by the late Isaac Asimov. Foundation's Triumph brings to a grand finale Asimov's famed Foundation Universe.

As a speaker and on television, David Brin shares unique insights—serious and humorous—about ways that changing technology may affect our future lives.

Bay Area native JC Arkham has been pursuing interests in science fiction since childhood. For Gyro’s World of Terror, he worked as prop builder, room chair designer, special effects makeup artist, line actor, and talent coordinator. Over the decades, JC has become obsessed with lightsabers. He designs and builds them, and he maintains the Original Lightsaber (www.theoriginallightsaber.com), a website dedicated to the history of these weapons throughout Star Wars canon and Legends. You might have seen him in a feature film or two as well. Currently, he restores vintage video arcade games, many of which visitors can find situated about his house. Don’t let the cats roaming between your legs damage your scores!

Most weekends, you’ll find JC at local science fiction conventions or at planning meetings for these events. Worldcon 75 in Helsinki was the first time and only time he’s been out of the United States! An upstanding member of the Bay Area Science Fiction Association (BASFA), he’s put in time with the 501st Golden Gate Garrison and other science fiction groups, as well as serving one term as board member for ConSanity, Inc. Future ventures include Art Director for a future Costume Con.

A graphic artist by trade, JC runs Blue Mirage Studios, a firm dedicated to providing graphic design, print, branding, and signage to businesses throughout Silicon Valley. With degrees in art, sciences, and design, he has a resume that includes high-tech management experience during the pre-dot.com bust era and in the media industry. As Art Director for Worldcon 76, JC has crafted the look of the convention, including logos, mascot conception, and print and online advertising.

Since 2012, Arkham has been the host of the NerdVana Podcast, a science-fiction and fantasy online show/nerd outlet for film, literature, science-fiction fandom, comic books, and whatever else contributors wish to discuss. Over time, participants and guests have targeted Superman, Batman, Edgar Allan Poe, H. P. Lovecraft, Firefly and Serenity, the Star Wars universe, the Star Trek universe, the ins and outs of curating comic-book collections with Brad Lyau, time travel, the history of Marvel Comics, and the Academy Awards. The show has interviewed many authors such as John Scalzi, Kim Stanley Robinson, Paolo Bacigalupi, Richard Kadrey,

Ernest Kline, J.M. Frey, Emily Jiang, Marie Brennan, and Ellen Klages. Explore the podcast’s oeuvre at www.nerdvanapodcast.com. Two-Buck Chuck though . . . even Doctor Doom thinks twice about being around that guy.

Brianna WuBrianna is a Democratic candidate for the United

States Congress in the Massachusetts 8th District. She is a computer programmer, cyber security expert, and small business owner with a proven track record of standing up for progressive values.

Brianna founded and runs her own independent technology firm in Dedham, Massachusetts. She also hosts several long-running podcasts on both tech and culture, including “Rocket” on Relay FM. Brianna came to national prominence when she and other women working in the tech industry were personally targeted by alt-right hate groups, including one spearheaded by Steve Bannon, ex-Chief Strategist to Donald Trump. Despite multitudes of threats on her life and her family, Brianna has never wavered as a

voice for the marginalized, including women, people of color, and LGBT individuals. The story of her continuing fight for social and economic justice has been told and fictionalized in several media, including an episode of Law

& Order SVU.

When getting away from politics and technology, she enjoys personally restoring and maintaining her classic car, racing her motorcycle, and watching the New York Yankees lose with her loving husband Frank.

Frank WuFrank Wu earned a Ph.D. in bacterial genetics from

University of Wisconsin-Madison, and then parlayed that degree into successful careers in biotech patent law and science fiction art and writing.

In the course of winning four Hugo Awards for his art, he often pointed out scientific errors in the stories he was illustrating. And in his own art, he painted dinosaurs playing guitar and giant space chickens, which are totally scientifically plausible. His art can be found in Amazing Stories, Realms of Fantasy, Fantastic Stories, Chris Garcia's Drink Tank and other venues, including his website, frankwu.com.

More recently, he has embarked on a writing career, with three stories appearing in Analog, the top magazine for hard science fiction. One story, about a deep sea

submersible in love, won the award for best short story in Analog.

Frank lives in Boston with his wonderful wife Brianna, a software engineer and progressive Democrat running for Congress, along with three little dogs that should know better.

Hotel InformationWelcome to BayCon 2019!

Hotel Renovations Information

The remodeling of the hotel’s lobby and restaurant that started before BayCon 2018 (and which caused considerable inconvenience for many BayCon attendees) is complete and looks great.

Naturally, there is still more construction going on, as the Marriott is busy renovating all the sleep rooms. Renovations for rooms in the “South” wing of the hotel are complete, and rooms in the “North” Wing (rooms x090-x156) are currently being remodeled.

Sadly, having the North Wing off-line for construction means that it won’t be possible to walk from the Convention Mezzanine around to the ConSuite in Room 3063. You’ll need to take the Ballroom elevator down to the first floor, turn right down the hallway and then take the Tower elevator up to the third floor.

Care and Feeding of the Hotel Staff (aka Tipping)

We acknowledge that some of the hotel staff might find us a bit odd, but we’re confident that showering them with money is a good way to make them feel more comfortable. Thus, please remember to tip the staff in whichever form of payment is appropriate for your budget. For maids and housekeeping staff, the suggested tip is $2 per day per occupant of the room. If you’re throwing a room party, please throw in some extra cash to account for the extra trash. For bellhops and other nice people who help you move heavy objects between your car and your room, the normal tip is anywhere from $2 to $5. If you have a very large load, or need multiple trips, please increase your tip accordingly. Ten to twenty bucks would not be overdoing it, here.

Parking

San Mateo Marriott has on-site parking free for BayCon attendees! Valet parking is also available at a reduced rate, or free if you have a handicap permit or placard. For additional parking and transportaion options, please check Marriott's website.

Pets

Sadly, the San Mateo Marriott does not allow pets. NO LIVE PETS. Again; NO LIVE PETS at all. Service animals of any variety are always welcome—make sure hotel staff are properly notified during your stay.

If you have problems or suggestions, bring them to ConOps (located in the Connect 2 room), and we’ll be happy to help you.

Hotel Food & DrinkThe Hotel’s Restaurant and Lobby Bar are ready to

go for BayCon, and they will be serving from early in the morning until late in the evening throughout BayCon.

Party RulesWe realize that parties are traditionally a large

component of the BayCon nightlife. Please observe the following rules while enjoying the parties. Please take any questions or issues to the BayCon Hotel Operations staff (located in Connect 2). Please don’t argue with the hotel staff. That’s our job.

1) Guests wishing to be on the Party floor (3rd floor) and host a party may be required to pay a refundable deposit at check-in, and sign a copy of the party rules upon arrival. Should damage occur, the Hotel will assess the appropriate cost of the damage, deduct the costs of repair from the deposit, and notify BayCon in addition to the occupants.

If in the reasonable estimate of the Hotel no damage has been done, the Hotel will refund deposits within one week of departure. Guests on this floor will be subject to the same policies and procedures as any other guest. A guest can choose to leave a cash deposit or a credit card for authorization at time of check-in.

2. The maximum number of overnight guests in a guest room is as follows due to local fire code regulations:

KING = 3 Guests Max (one roll-away allowed, inventory permitting)

DOUBLE/DOUBLE = 4 Guests Max (no roll-away allowed)

3. Individuals in guest rooms are responsible for carpet cleaning fees and/or damage fees beyond normal wear and tear. The Hotel will perform standard cleaning procedures after party-floor guests depart. Any areas of the carpet which require major spotting, extra labor shampooing/ cleaning, repair, or replacement will be charged to that guest room.

We request that party hosts please ask the attendees not to carry drinks of any kind into the hallways so that additional cleaning fees for the hallway carpet cleaning are not charged to the party rooms.

4. Individuals are responsible for significant damage to furniture, art, and accessories in guest rooms. Individuals are responsible for broken items not reported to the hotel at the time of check-in.

The Hotel will assess fees associated with damages and broken items, including shipping and tax. Replacement and repair fees will be charged to the room, accordingly. Please do not place ice bins or large water containers directly on desk tops in the guest rooms—please keep them in the bathtub.

5. The Hotel requests that nothing be removed from the guest rooms including: wall hangings, art, furniture, beds, etc. No room furnishings or artwork may be relocated from room to room unless pre-approved through the Hotel. Bed removal service may not available.

6. The entire hotel is non-smoking: Any guest rooms in which smoking has occurred will be treated upon departure. The Hotel will assess a $250 charge for treatment and cleaning procedures. Cleaning charges will be added to the final bill of any party room that has been smoked in.

7. Hotel will work with BayCon to assure noise levels are monitored and kept to a level that does not elicit noise complaints from other guests.

Failure to observe a reasonable volume level, or repeated complaints, will result in eviction from the property. The Hotel will include the BayCon Convention Committee in this process.

8. Use of electric cookware, warmers and open flame equipment are not allowed in the rooms.

9. Alcohol may not be sold out of any guest room, nor may it be sold by anyone other than the Hotel staff. Sales of alcohol from a guest to any other guest will result in eviction from the property. The BayCon Convention Committee will be included in this process.

10. Per state law; alcohol will not be given to anyone under the age of 21. If a party fails to check ID, or an individual provides alcohol to anyone under the age of 21, it may result in immediate eviction from the property and/or notification of the local authorities. The BayCon Convention Committee will be involved in this process. This is consistent with prior and existing BayCon policies.

11. Any signs or flyers posted around the convention should refer to "reception", and not "party".

Convention OperationsWelcome to ConOps

ConOps is your central point of contact for convention staff and general problem resolution. We do a lot of work helping the various parts of the convention communicate. Feel free to stop in with any questions, concerns, or just to say "Hi" to the on duty staff.

Here are some of the services we can help you with:

Lost and Found

We are the keepers of the main Lost and Found box for the convention. If you find something, please bring it to us, and we’ll hold it for its family. If you’ve lost something, come by and describe it to us, and you may get a joyous reunion. If we don’t have your missing item, we’ll give you a “missing” form to increase the likelihood of a delayed joyous reunion.

Communication with Staff

If you have a message for anyone who is working on our staff this year, stop by the office and drop it off. If it’s urgent, we will endeavor to track down the individual as quickly as possible.

Problem Resolution

In conjunction with our communication facilitation function (or rather, since we know who to talk to), if you have a problem at the convention, come by and let us try to help. If we can’t help you directly, we may be able to connect you with whoever can.

Found Badges

ConOps is the #1 choice when inquiring after a lost membership badge, or when you see one lying lonesome and alone on a chaise lounge by the pool. Please bring all found badges to ConOps. Any turned in at other locations will be forwarded to us.

Hours and Location

The ConOps office can be found in Connect 2 with Program Ops! We will be open for the following hours:

Friday ..........................9:00 AM to MidnightSaturday ......................6:00 AM to MidnightSunday .........................6:00 AM to MidnightMonday .......................6:00 AM to close of con

Artistic Solutions, Incorporated ("ASI"), dba BayCon, is committed to running conventions, and other events, that are as free from harassment as we can possibly make them. Convention and event organizers are authorized to take any curative or corrective action they deem necessary to protect event attendees, including staff and volunteers, from those who have committed acts of harassment, up to and including expelling the offender from the event without a refund. Regardless of whether or not an action was taken against an offender during a convention or event, the ASI Board of Directors reserves the right to take additional protective actions, up to and including prohibiting (temporarily or permanently) the offender's attendance at future ASI events.

Definition of Harassment

"Harassment" is acting in a manner that is disturbing or upsetting to others. That includes and is not limited to: making offensive comments, making repeated or unwanted sexual advances, being deliberately intimidating, stalking or following, photographing or recording in an upsetting manner, repeatedly disrupting panels or other events, making inappropriate physical contact, staring or leering, and taking retaliatory action against someone who complained of harassment, or encouraging others to take retaliatory action.

The ASI Board of Directors will, on a semi-annual basis, review the implementation of this policy and revise it as needed.

BayCon Harassment PolicyBayCon is committed to continual efforts to make the

convention a positive and accessible experience. Our goal is for all aspects of our convention to be accessible to all attendees.

We currently provide the following:

• Wheelchair/scooter spaces and dedicated seating for disabled members in all programming spaces.

• Project Oasis will be present to offer a quiet space for the duration of the con.

• At peak hours, registration will provide alternate measures for those who are unable to stand for an extended period. Alternatives for those who need to bypass lines for large events are also available. Please contact programming to make those arrangements.

• Any specific requests for accommodations we may not have covered should be directed to [email protected] . We will happily work with you to provide an accessible and comfortable solution.

• Attendees with allergies or scent and chemical sensitivities should note that the Marriott does use scented products in their cleaning. Please contact the hotel at booking to request allergen-free rooms.

• We encourage able-bodied members to use the stairs at high traffic times in order to leave the elevators accessible to those for whom stairs are a barrier.

• We request that all members be mindful that scented products are problematic for many attendees and to refrain from unnecessary fragrances at BayCon.

• We remind smokers to please stay away from access points and the paths to those access points so that others may enter and exit the venue safely and comfortably.

BayCon Accessibility

BayCon Blood DriveContinuing our annual tradition we welcome the

Vitalant bloodmobile, on Saturday, May 25th, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Their mission statement: Vitalant exists to make a difference in people’s lives by bringing together the best people, inspiring individuals to donate blood, producing a safe and ample blood supply, advancing cutting-edge research and embracing continuous quality improvement.

If you are interested in donating, visit Vitalant's fan table in the Convene Lobby.

Lost Badge PolicyPlease Don’t Lose Your Badge!!!!! We cannot replace a

lost badge. If, despite all your efforts to hang onto it, your badge becomes lost, please report it to the Registration and ConOps desks as soon as possible. Once your lost badge is reported, you may purchase a new membership (unfortunately, at full price). As soon as your lost badge is found, we will, with a huge sigh of relief, refund your second purchase. We realize that this policy is, to say the least, draconian, but in the past people have “lost” their badges by handing them off to a friend, so for that reason there will be no exceptions.

Name & Identification PolicyThe BayCon Science-Fiction Convention is a

community effort. As such, we do not sell tickets or admission. Instead, we sell memberships to individuals who are interested in experiencing what goes on at BayCon and in becoming a part of our community. As a member-based organization, we require our members’ legal names (as would be listed on a government-issued ID) and current address information for our records.

We reserve the right to require you to show us a government-issued photo ID with your name and address before registering you as a member or releasing your membership badge from our possession. This policy does not prevent you from using a “fan name” or “nickname,” although it is also our policy that if a fan name is given, the legal name will also appear on the member’s badge. If you feel this would cause a problem, please come to the registration desk and ask to see the Registration Department Head.

Birds of a Feather (BoF)We all know that we have various interests in common,

but there just isn’t always a way to put a panel about everything connected to a science fiction or fantasy interest on the tracks. BoFs are your opportunity to get together with other fans of a particular TV show, book series, or special interest and share your views, ideas, and enthusiasm with like-minded souls! So, if you’re really the most dedicated Browncoat, or truly more buck than Starbuck herself, or are on the edge of your seat to see how many other Heralds have made it this year to BayCon—a BoF is the place for you!

Hey, parents! When your kids are bouncing off the walls and you need a place to sit and relax, come on up to Collaborate 2. Family Friendly is a place where parents and children can come together for story time, arts, crafts, and music; where the kids can run, play, be silly, and not sit still and be quiet. We'll have an assortment of games and activities throughout the weekend, some for the very smallest, and some geared towards slightly older kids. Please note: we are not a babysitting service, and we cannot be responsible for the care of anyone’s children.

Children must have Kid-in-Tow badges, and an adult with a membership badge must be in the room with them at all times. We may ask parents to shadow kids that are experiencing behavior challenges.

For youth memberships "Options (13 - 14+)" or a Full Weekend badge (15+):

Older kids who are participating in the con independently are welcome to join us in Family Friendly without a parent. We will not be responsible for older kids comings and goings, and if their behavior is a problem, we may ask them to leave. If they aren’t old enough to wander the con unsupervised, they need a parent in Family Friendly.

All activities in Family Friendly are open to older youth, but we are setting aside a corner of the room for programming geared towards them/hang out space for the whole weekend. Older kids and teens can feel free to join in any activity in the main FF space that appeals to them, as well.

Youth who are in the teen space during regular FF hours: Please be conscious of the fact that you are sharing the room with small people and be good neighbors.

Family Friendly After Hours

This will be youth (13+) focused space. Kids of all ages are welcome (with parents for younger kids) but be aware that teens will be teening. We will be asking them to be aware of sharing space with younger kids during the day, but after hours we will not ask them to censor their language and content for small kids. If younger kids join in, please be friendly to the teens.Hours

Buying Art

To bid or buy in the Art Show, you need a bidder number and stickers, which you get at the Art Show desk. Any bids written with member or badge numbers are not valid, and will be ignored and/or removed.

Placing Bids

To place a bid, place a bidder number sticker on the bid sheet, and write in the bid amount. Bid as often as you wish. The highest bidder, either by highest written bid or by voice bid at auction, will win the piece. Four written bids will send the piece to auction.

Once a bid is placed, it may not be removed without the approval of the Art Show staff. If you make the winning bid for a piece, we expect you to purchase the piece.

Direct Sales

At their option, artists may offer a piece for “Direct Sale." If a piece has NO bids, you may purchase it at the Direct Sale price. This allows you to have the piece you

want without the uncertainty of bidding. Only pieces with an amount posted in the Direct Sale price space are available for direct sale. If you find a piece that you wish to purchase by Direct Sale, tell an Art Show staff member that you want to buy a piece and they will assist you. Do not place a bid or remove the artwork from the display.

Direct Sale purchases are paid for at the time of sale, even if you are bidding on other artwork, and the works remain on exhibit until the end of the show.

Picking Up Your Art

Art purchased may be picked up on Monday (check hours). If you need to leave the convention before then, please make arrangements with the Art Show staff. If you have not picked up your art or contacted the Art Show staff by Sunday at 3:00 PM to make arrangements, you forfeit the art to the next highest bidder, or it will be returned to the artist.

When you purchase a piece of art, no rights (copyright, publication, etc) to it are transferred. If you wish to purchase usage rights, you must contact the artist directly. The art show can provide contact info.

Your signature on the bidder registration form indicates you understand and agree to these rules.

For further information, speak to an Art Show staff member.

Youth OmbudsmanThis year at BayCon we are introducing a new service

for you and your family. The Youth Ombudsman is in place to facilitate interactions between youth members and BayCon staff. As we adjust to new badging rules for Bay Con’s new generation, the Youth Ombudsman will be available to answer questions and address concerns. The goal is to create a bridge between the youth members and staff. If there are issues, the Youth Ombudsman will be there to act as a go between without bias and with an open mind.

Any parent or youth who would like to speak or bring up issues can find me either in Consuite, or you can ask someone in Convention Operations (Connect 2) to get a hold of me.

Artemis Spaceship Bridge SimulatorDuring this weekend, humans and aliens alike will have

an opportunity to experience what it is like to crew an Artemis-class light cruiser, defending the sector, engaging in tactical combat maneuvers, and exploring this part of space.

Artemis is a multi-player, starship bridge simulator, in which five of the (up to) six-person crew have their own ship bridge consoles. The stations are: helm, weapons, engineering, science, and communications. The sixth crew member is the captain, who must direct all the other stations for the mission's success. New ship designs have been recently delivered that will allow the captain to direct one or more additional crew members in piloting independent fighter craft, as well!

We will have an experienced starship crew on hand to answer your questions, and we will provide basic operating instructions for all ship systems to new cadets unfamiliar with the Artemis.

Individual crew flights will be in 55-minute blocks, so we hope you and your friends can make time to join us, and experience the challenge of teamwork needed to successfully run a starship of the line.

Artemis is in Synergy 3. Hours are as follows:

Friday ........... 1:00 PM to 10:00 PMSaturday ....... Noon to 10:00 PMSunday .......... Noon to 10:00 PMMonday ........ 10:00 AM to 3:00 PMPlease check with Artemis personnel for any other

details you might need.

Policies

* Attendees will be suggested to self-organize into teams of 6 people (larger teams are possible if the players wish to play a ship class that has a complement of fighters)

* All players and observers must have valid BayCon badges.

* Teams will be able to sign up for 55-minute blocks, this being about the time for a single successful level 4 or 5 game, or several unsuccessful games.

* Games will end precisely on the 55-minute mark, regardless of any such game's status. This will generally be done by setting an automatic time limit on the game prior to game start.

* A team will be able to sign up for as many blocks as they wish, as long as they understand that they can be bumped to a waiting list by any other team signing up that has a larger number of players who have not yet played this weekend.

* All members of a team must be present at the scheduled start time, or their team will be bumped for the

highest priority fully present waitlisted team.* We will provide an additional waitlist of individual

players, with which teams with missing members may fill their rosters at play time instead of being bumped for another team.

* Substutions during play sessions may only occur with the consent of all players and the substitutes.

* Team members are free, at the start of the session and at any time during the session, to assign or reassign roles however they wish.

* Badged observers are welcome, as long as they do not interrupt play.

* The Artemis room will adhere to BayCon's policy regarding age of independence. Children below the age of 14 are required by convention policy to be accompanied at all times by their parent or guardian, and the Artemis staff will enforce this policy.

* Food and drink are not permitted in the game area.* Abuse or harassment of equipment, decorations,

furnishings, staff, observers, or players will not be tolerated, and may result in being removed from the room, or even the con, depending on severity. Any such behavior will be automatically reported to F.L.A.R.E..

* In the case of technical problems, our staff ’s best efforts will be provided to get you playing again as quickly as possible. That being said, there is no guarantee that our staff will be able to provide you with any sort of recompense for lost time. It’s only a game.

The Artemis bridge is provided by the Bay Area Artemis Training Fleet.

OasisStressed out? Overwhelmed? Needing a respite from

the hustle and bustle of the convention? The Oasis is a quiet safer space where you can rest and recharge. You don’t have to talk to anyone if you don’t want to. Fan-friendly coloring pages, quiet activities, short reading, and physical self-care supplies are available. If you need something you can’t find, let us know, and we’ll see if we can help.

All persons of every kind are welcome. Follow the green signs and find us on the first floor to get rejuvenated to go back out and enjoy BayCon to the fullest!.

What's more, nerd and geek culture are already masters at several of these lenses. Join writer and educator M. Todd Gallowglas to find out what lenses you alreadyM. Todd Gallowglas

Kathleen BartholomewBorn in 1953, Kathleen Bartholomew cannot stand mid-

century style and is delighted to believing in the 21st Century. Accidentally irradiated in her fifth month in utero, Kathleen grew up (with a variety of amusing deficits) to be the life-long writing partner of her sister, Kage Baker; at least, until Kage died in 2010. Kathleen is busy staving off the myriad attacks of old age in order to continue Kage's stories as much as possible. Currently, several short stories and a novel are under consideration —or so her agent tells her. She keeps writing anyway. Kathleen lives in Los Angeles with her family, two cats and a parrot; they are hoping for a Corgi soon. (all suggestions welcome.) Kathleen also writes a semi-daily blog about Kage, writing, and whatever enters her head—it can be found at www.wordpress.com/view/doctorzeus.co.

Doug has written for several editions of Traveller, most notably authoring At Close Quarters (BITS) with James Lindsay, and GURPS Traveller: Ground Forces (Steve Jackson Games). Doug has been married to the lovely Kirsten (who is not a penguin) for 27 years.

Program Participantsto be a dilettante. Ctein lives in Daly City with retired technical writer and geologist Paula Butler, three demented psittacines, a half dozen more-or-less normal computers, and twenty kilobooks. He reports that the house seems to be shrinking...

Howard DavidsonHoward Davidson was captured by a Heinlein book in second

grade, and hasn't been seen much since. Inspired to do science fiction by reading it, he went off and got a Ph.D. in physics, the best training availabe for a crackpot inventor. He is an Industrial Physicist in Silicon Valley. He holds 52 patents. He has published and presented numerous technical papers and one technical book chapter, has taught Computer Engineering at Stanford, and has done professional biology on the side. He worked on things he can't talk about at LLNL, though he will admit that some hardware he touched made it to the moon. He gets to write science fiction for the annual budget cycle, and fantasy for the planning cycle.

Margaret DavisMargaret Davis is a singer, Celtic harper, flutist and recorder

player who has dedicated her life to performing original arrangements of Celtic and Medieval music. She grew up in Illinois where she was classically trained as a flutist and recorder player and received degrees in Music and French from Knox College. She has recorded 14 CDs with her bands Brocelïande and Avalon Rising, and on them she sings in French, Medieval French, Latin, Provençal, Gallician Portuguese, Gaelic, Spanish, and English. Margaret’s interest in music as a healing modality has led to work with Oakland’s Healing Muses, Stanford Hospital’s Music for Healing Program, and with Vision Journey Facilitator Britt Nesheim. Margaret is past Chairman of the Board of the Bay Area Folk Harp Society and she currently co-runs independent record label Flowinglass Music with her husband Kristoph Klover. Jon DeClesJon DeCles has been writing (and selling) science fiction and

fantasy since 1964. He has written a lot of other stuff as well. He ekes out his living working on stage. He writes almost as slowly as he composes music. He once met Hugo Gernsback.

Tyler HayesTyler is a science fiction and fantasy writer from Northern

California, and a Social Justice Bard specializing in the College of Comfort. He writes stories he hopes will show people that not only are they not alone in this terrifying world, but we might just make things better. His fiction has appeared online in Anotherealm, Nossa Morte, and The Edge of Propinquity, and in print in anthologies from Alliteration Ink, Graveside Tales, and Aetherwatch. Tyler’s debut novel, The Imaginary Corpse, is coming from Angry Robot Books in fall 2019.

JL DotyJim is a full-time SF&F writer, scientist (Ph.D. Electrical

Engineering), laser geek, and former running-dog-lackey for the bourgeois capitalist establishment. He's been writing for over 30 years, with 10 published books. His first success came through self-publishing when his books went word-of-mouth viral, and sold enough that he was able to quit his day-job, start working for himself and write full time--his new boss is a real jerk. That led to contracts with traditional publishers like Open Road Media and Harper Collins Voyager, and his books are now a mix of traditional and self-published. His tenth novel, the third in his urban fantasy series The Dead Among Us, was released in February of 2017. Last year he finished his thirteenth novel A Hymn for the Dying, the first in a new SF series, The Blacksword Regiment, and is busy getting rejection slips from publishers. Right now he's fleshing out ideas for the next book in The Dead Among Us; he's writing another episode in The Treasons Cycle; and he's just finished his fourteenth novel, Counter Force, hard, military SF. Science is a passion, but writing is a demanding need.

Charon DunnCharon Dunn is the author of the Adventures of Sonny Knight

trilogy, a YA action adventure series set in a climate changed, post dystopian far future. She has experience with a great many other things, including deposition summaries, videogaming, forensics, bunny rabbits, audio engineering, fortune telling, rhythm and bass guitars, secretly sabotaging Oxford commas, multiple flavors of fandom, and trial preparation. She lives with a massive Ragdoll named The Big Kahuna, whom some believe is the largest cat in San Francisco. Originally from Maui, she has lived in SF since the '80s and has no intention of ever leaving.

Jeremy ErmanWhen Jeremy was little, he hummed and daydreamed during

school, improvised when supposed to be practicing the violin or piano, and fell asleep most nights imagining what would happen next in the books he was reading. Now he has a degree in Music Composition, works as a pianist and music director for theatres and schools in the Bay Area, and stays up late trying to write down his own stories. His fiction has appeared at Daily Science Fiction and his non-fiction at Black Gate. He is currently working on a novel and a musical. Visit http://jeremyerman.net

Program ParticipantsMargaret McGaffey Fisk

I've lived many roles in my life starting with Foreign Service Brat (child of US diplomats) and ranging through editor, programmer, wife, writer, mother, and cook, along with too many others to mention. I called foreign countries home as a child then lived and worked in many segments of US society, both racial and economic. These experiences inform my writing as I explore the barriers between cultures, economic classes, and social standings. Ultimately, my stories are about people whether in the distant future, in alternate pasts, or pretty much everything in between. My stories have appeared in various science fiction and fantasy anthologies while my indie novels cover science fiction, steampunk, and romance. Like my stories, I enjoy exploring a wide variety of topics, especially when discussions veer off in unexpected directions. I am an amateur philosopher and keen observer of humanity. This makes me confident, but eager to learn both where I've gone astray and where I've never been. A closed mind is a sad waste of the little time we have to experience our complicated world. Visit my website, margaretmcgaffeyfisk.com, to learn about my books, interesting topics, book reviews,

Colin FiskGamer, Author, Chef, Photographer, Nerd. Though best

known for helping write and design Cyberpunk: the Role Playing Game and various supplements, he’s worked on more than ten published games. In his mundane life, Colin has been working with technology companies for more than twenty years, having worked on everything from the QuickCam to setting up the social systems in Second Life, eProcurement and is currently working on games for slot machines. Colin currently lives in Reno, NV with his wife Margaret and, in his spare time, is working on creating new worlds when he’s not wandering the neighborhood taking nature photos of the local animals or working in his garden.

Jacob FiskJacob Fisk is a lifelong fandom member, with a love for

books, video games, anime, comics, and other media on occasion. He is studying to be a veterinarian, and as such is a stickler for biology and science in fiction (to an insufferable degree at times), but is also a fan of classical mythology and history. You can often find him ranting about some minor detail for far longer than is considered necessary, or recharging his batteries in a corner. Not as scary as he looks.

Jay FreemanJay Freeman has always regarded science fiction and fantasy

as travel guides to the future, which he used assiduously to study and prepare for the trip: In 1952, at the age of six, he wanted to be a rocket pilot and explore other worlds. Unfortunately, he had been born on a planet where spaceflight was an escapist fantasy for losers. Notwithstanding, he ended up writing flight-control software for an outfit whose corporate goal is the colonization

of Mars. Go figure. Jay's other SF&F-related activities include levitation (in small airplanes), cloning higher life forms (roses), first-hand study and observation of far-distant worlds (amateur astronomy), dealing every day with strange alien beings (cats), and playing electric guitar (no parenthetical explanation needed). He has five academic degrees, none of which have had anything to do with his career or employment. He lives in Redondo Beach and wants to be a dilettante if he grows up.

Michael GarciaBay Area native, organized fandom member, and convention

super-utility staffer since 1992, Michael Garcia is no stranger to most convention-goers in California. When he's not working in an international broadcast center at night, he's helping fandom organizations begin their chapters or responding to member inquires as an ombudsperson. He has served as a paid/volunteer staffer and vendor at several conventions on the West Coast, in nearly every department. In his seventh return to BayCon, he'll be representing The Royal Manticoran Navy (Fri/Sat) and STARFLEET (Sun) in the halls and in panels, and he's always happy to speak to people interested in joining organized fandom groups and helping them navigate their way to success.

Mark has been an educator for over seventeen years, teaching English at one of the top private schools in the country. He has taught literature and storytelling in both China and Japan as an academic and cultural exchange teacher. In the past, Mark served as director of education outreach for Arclight Repertory Theater and was education specialist for the Shakespeare on the Square Festival in San Jose. From comics to tabletop and role-playing games, Mark has a love for all that is gloriously geeky in the world. In the few hours left between writing and teaching, Mark spends time with his wife and his six year old son, Bryce, and the official Corgi of the Ascended, a Fluffy Pembroke named Zuzu.

BayCon Remembers Harold Harrigan

written by Lisa Deutsch Harrigan

Harold Harrigan was born in Brooklyn, NYC, and by his mid 20s had discovered his two avocations, computer hardware maintenance and design, and Science Fiction Fandom. He combined the two when he got a job maintaining the ground computers for the LEM to be used with Apollo One. His story of going to the Vehicle Assembly Building and riding a glass elevator past an assembled Saturn V rocket was a favorite of his. Soon after that job was sadly halted, he moved to the West Coast and got involved in California Fandom. He went to the first Baycon, the World Science Fiction Convention in Berkeley. He met his future wife Lisa at a Long Beach Westercon. And after he moved up to San Jose, they got married in 1977. He hated being in committees, but he supported his wife in her convention running. And he loved going to the Science and Space panels. He was 79 when he died. He is survived by his wife, Lisa and son, Harold, and daughter Jenevieve, her husband Mark, and 4 grandkids.

Lisa will be throwing a memorial party for Harold on Saturday night. Flyers will be posted for room and time.
