M(inister): Come, let us bow down in worship, and let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker.

C(ongregation): For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.

M: Praise the Lord, every nation, and extol him, all you people.

C: For great is his love toward us, and his faithfulness endures forever.

CONFESSION OF SINS & WORDS OF FORGIVNESS

M: Dear brothers and sisters in Christ: The Word of God urges us to confess our sins to the Lord and to seek his mercy. The Bible also assures us that God delights in showing mercy. So let us bow our head in true humility and sorrow, and confess our sins to the Lord.

All: Almighty and merciful Father, we confess to you our sin. We have wandered and given into temptation. We have sought to earn your love by our actions, yet at the same time, we have done what you have clearly commanded us not to do. We know we can not earn your love, so we appeal to your mercy as we repent. Forgive us Lord, for the sake of Jesus’ precious blood.

(Time for reflection) M: There is nothing we can say. There is nothing we can do. There is nothing we can

buy that can remove our sinfulness from us. Yet, with Jesus’ blood—more precious than gold or silver or all the jewels of this world—God’s demands were met. So be strengthened in faith, knowing that God has removed your guilt forever. Therefore as a called servant of Christ, and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of Holy Spirit. May God’s peace be with you

your right hand. Through your living and abiding Word, give us hearts to know him and faith to follow where he has gone; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” 17 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. 6 “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. SERMON TEXT 1 PETER 5:6-11

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

SERMON

THE APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
