At a recent software engineering management course, the participants were given an awkward question to answer. “If you had just boarded an airliner and discovered that your team of programmers had been responsible for the flight control software how many of you would disembark immediately?” Among the ensuing forest of raised hands, only one man sat motionless. When asked what he would do, he replied that he would be quite content to stay onboard. With his team’s software, he said, the plane was unlikely to even taxi as far as the runway, let alone take off!

Now, that’s confidence!

involved in our nation’s most important campaigns. With most of his career shrouded in a classified cloak, O’Neill was the man on the ground we have never heard of but know exists. He was one of the quiet professionals performing the most difficult tasks in the most difficult circumstances, serving his remarkable career in the shadows and keeping America safe in the process. One of the nation’s most decorated veterans, O’Neill’s missions inspire movies. He served as the lead jumper on the mission to rescue Capt. Richard Phillips, whose ship was taken hostage by Somali pirates in 2009 in the Indian Ocean. The Tom Hanks’ movie “Captain Phillips” is based on that incident. O’Neill helped save Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, the only survivor in a failed mission to capture a Taliban leader, which prompted the film “Lone Survivor”.

O’Neill has been decorated over 50 times with honors, including two Silver Stars, four Bronze Stars with Valor, a Joint Service Commendation Medal with Valor, three Presidential Unit citations, and two Navy/Marine Corps Commendations with Valor. Master of Ceremonies for Memorial Day will be former Montana Governor (1993-2001) Marc Racicot. Also speaking will be one of our state’s leading trial attorneys, A. Clifford Edwards, and Montana’s Adjutant General, Major General Matthew T. Quinn. General Quinn is responsible to the Governor of the State of Montana to provide qualified Army National Guard Soldiers ready to deploy in support of national defense, homeland defense or military support to civil authority. Everyone is urged to observe Memorial Day and the ground-breaking ceremony in Fort Peck on Monday.

On reaching his plane seat a man is surprised to see a parrot strapped in next to him. He asks the stewardess for a coffee where upon the parrot squawks “And get me a whisky you cow!” The stewardess, flustered, brings back a whisky for the parrot and forgets the coffee. When this omission is pointed out to her the parrot drains its glass and bawls “And get me another whisky you idiot”. Quite upset, the girl comes back shaking with another whisky but still no coffee. Unaccustomed to such slackness the man tries the parrot’s approach: “I’ve asked you twice for a coffee, now go and get it or I’ll give you a swift kick in the butt!” The very next moment, both he and the parrot have been wrenched up and thrown out of the emergency exit by two burly stewards. Plunging downwards, the parrot turns to him and says, “You know, for someone who can’t fly, you complain too much!”

Opheim’s Donnie Bailey and Steve Fauth recently returned competing at the State Special Olympics Games May 13-16 in Billings. On Wednesday morning they bowled at 8:00 a.m. Steve got a 4th place ribbon in his division and Donnie got a 5th place ribbon in his division. Then they attended the Athletes Dinner at the Montana Pavilion after which they, along with their coach Janet Bailey, marched into the Rimrock Auto Arena with all the other athletes from across the state at the Opening Ceremonies. Thursday was a free day for them. On Friday morning Donnie Bailey and his parents/coaches Jim and Janet Bailey and his uncle Bob Bergstrom attended the Closing Ceremonies at the Laurel High School. Donnie had been selected to be a member of the Norbie Nascar Challenge Pit Crew for selling more than 100 tickets on the Chevrolet Pickup. Bob Norbie is the president of Special Olympics Montana. In the Nascar Challenge Mr. Norbie sat in a racecar (cardboard) with his arms and legs sticking out. The Pit Crew had to put a tire on each limb while one member (Donnie) cleaned the windshield (the glass part of his racing helmet) with a spray bottle of water and a cloth while another put gas in the car (twinkies in Norbie’s mouth). There were four crews and they were timed in the event. Before the Torch was extinguished and passed on to the Missoula Police Department, the raffle drawing was held. No one from Eastern Montana was a winner. The pickup went to Amanda Minchew of Billings and the four-wheel ATV went to Josh Allestad of Great Falls (but don’t let that discourage you from buying tickets in the future: remember when Wally Storkson sold the winning
