Week commencing 4th May 2020Year 5- English

Hi Year 5,

I hope you are all doing well and staying strong. We all miss you so much! I’ve been playing some of my favourite games from when I was younger this week to keep myself occupied. I’ve even tried to teach the rabbits how to play!

I’d love to hear all about what you are doing to keep yourselves occupied! Remember you can get in contact with any of the Year 5 teachers by emailing [email protected]. We’re here to help you with work you’re stuck on, give you feedback on certain pieces, or just to have a chat with! Remember to put your class name in the subject so the right teacher will get to see it.

Hopefully hear from you soon,Miss Ring

Unfortunately, they were more interested in trying to chew the buttons and didn’t care if we lost! Maybe I should try teaching them a board game instead…

Chapter 1 summary

Percy Jackson has had a difficult life. He has been diagnosed with attention deficit–hyperactivity disorder and dyslexia, and he has been expelled from several schools—once for firing a cannon during a field trip.

Percy and his best friend, Grover, are on their way to another field trip when Rick Riordan’s The Lightning Thief begins.

When Percy gets into trouble on the trip, his teacher, Mrs. Dodds, takes him aside.

When they are alone, Mrs. Dodds turns into a gigantic, leathery creature and attacks him. Percy’s wheelchair-bound Latin teacher, Mr. Brunner, tosses a pen to him.

In Percy’s hands, the pen turns into a sword, and he defeats his monstrous teacher.

However, when Percy returns to class, no one else claims to have any memory of Mrs. Dodds; their teacher is Mrs. Kerr, whom Percy now meets.

Today, we are going to be reading Chapters 2 and 3.

Chapter 2 (2. THREE OLD LADIES KNIT THE SOCKS OF DEATH) starts near the end of page 2 on the website.

Chapter 3 (3. GROVER UNEXPECTEDLY LOSES HIS PANTS) starts on page 4 and finishes near the end of page 5 on the website.

Task 1

Carefully read Chapters 2 and 3 of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Pay special attention to the new characters we meet and the events that take place.

Each question has a mark at the end- this gives you a hint about how long/detailed your answer should be. A 3 mark question requires much more detail and explanation than a 1 mark question.

Meet it: Answer the retrieval questions using evidence from the text.Beat it: Use the clues in the text to support your answers to the inference questions.Smash it: Use evidence from the text to support your own opinion.

Silent letters

Some letters in words do not make a sound, they are silent.

Silent letters are letters that you can't hear when you say the word, but that are there when you write the word.

There are silent letters in some English words because over hundreds of years, we have changed how we pronounce these words, but have kept the spelling.

The spelling tells us how the word used to be pronounced. For example: knock. In the past, people used to say the word with the k sounded out at the beginning! That would sound very strange to us today!

Have a look at the words below- can you identify the silent letters?

13

Some silent letters are easy to spot- they are the first or last letter in a word that we don’t say. Others, however, can be more tricky to find.

Doubt, debt, design and campaign all contain silent letters too- these are just harder to notice.

In order to help us know if there might be a silent letter in a word, there are a few rules we can follow. Remember, as with all spelling rules, there will be exceptions (words that don’t follow the rule), so be careful!

Task 1- Look at the rules for silent letters on the next slide and write down as many words you know of that fit each rule. There will be a picture next to each rule to help start you off.

Page 14: May 2020 Year 5- English · Weve met a few different characters so far in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief… •Percy Jackson •Grover •Mr Brunner •Sally Jackson •Gabe

Wednesday 6th May 2020- SPAG

Rule 1: A silent B will occur after an M or before a T

Rule 2: Silent K and silent G can be found before an N

Rule 3: A silent L will follow A, O or U

Rule 4: A silent W will often occur before a R

14

Unfortunately, just like we have some words that don’t follow spelling rules, we have some silent letters that don’t have a rule at all! These ones we just have to memorise.

For example, although we often see silent H paired with a C (Chemist, chaos, technology) it can also be in words that don’t contain a C at all!

Meet it

Copy out the words below in your Home Learning book and show the silent letters within each word. You do this by either writing the silent letters in a different colour to the rest of the word, or underlining the silent letters.

Beat itI’ve written a short story about a boy called Ben, however I think I have made some mistakes with my spellings!I have numbered the words that I think should have silent letters, but I can’t remember how to spell them properly. In your Home Learning book, write out each word and then write the correction next to it. You might want to use different colours for the incorrect and correct spellings. You DO NOT have to copy out the whole story.

Wednesday 6th May 2020- SPAGSmash it (You have to complete the Meet it or the Beat it before you can move onto this)

Pick a couple of words with silent letters that you know people often spell incorrectly. You are going to have a go at creating drawings to help remind people how to spell the words. Below are a couple of examples to inspire you. You could have all the letters in the word written in different ways, you could create cartoons involving the letters, or just create a picture that people will remember.

18

If you think you have created something that may help others, share it with me (Miss Ring) and it may appear in next week’s slides! Send it to [email protected] and put ‘Silent letters’ as the subject. I can’t wait to see what you’ve created.

Figurative language

Language can be literal (obvious, plainly stated, communicates exactly what is meant) and figurative (suggests

and infers meaning, rather than simply stating it).

Literal language is a feature of non-fiction texts; figurative language is more commonly used

in fiction and poetry.

Figurative language uses figures of speech to give a text more richness and depth, often comparing

things to other things to create an image in the reader's mind.

Today we are going to recap three types of figurative language: simile, metaphor and personification.

Page 20: May 2020 Year 5- English · Weve met a few different characters so far in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief… •Percy Jackson •Grover •Mr Brunner •Sally Jackson •Gabe

Thursday 7th May 2020- SPAG

20

Simile

A simile is a comparison phrase which finds similar characteristics in two objects and compares them. Similes describe something by comparing one thing to another, always using like, or as.

The children crept, quietly as mice. The stars sparkled like diamonds in the sky.The engine roared like a lion. The wind howled as if it were an angry wolf.

Have a go at writing your own simile to describe a storm.

Thursday 7th May 2020- SPAG

21

Metaphor

A metaphor is a comparison which is not literally true. It suggests what something is like by comparing it with something else with similar characteristics. It is similar to a simile, but instead of using 'like' or 'as' it compares by suggesting that something is something else.

The children were silent mice. The King was a furious lion. The trees were a prison, trapping the boy.The stars were diamonds twinkling in the sky.

Have a go at writing your own metaphor to describe a rainbow.

Thursday 7th May 2020- SPAG

22

Personification

Personification is a type of figurative language which gives an object human characteristics (emotions, sensations, speech, physical movements)

The ship shivered at the bottom of the sea..The grass gently tickled her ankles. The sun hid silently behind a hug grey cloud. The wind dashed silently through the alleyways.

Have a go at writing your own personification to describe a sunset.

Bonus Task!

If you’re feeing creative today, you might like to have go at writing a poem, using figurative language, about what is going on in the world at the moment. Being creative is a great way to express emotions, so you could make it personal (about your own experiences/how you are feeling) or take a more general approach- it’s completely up to you!

Here are a few excerpts from famous poems that contain figurative language to inspire you.

A Red, Red RoseBy Robert BurnsO my Luve is like a red, red roseThat’s newly sprung in June;

O my Luve is like the melodyThat’s sweetly played in tune.

“Hope” is the thing with feathers

By Emily Dickinson

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -

That perches in the soul -

And sings the tune without the words -

And never stops - at all -

Two Sunflowers Move in the Yellow Room by William Blake“Ah, William, we’re weary of weather,”said the sunflowers, shining with dew.“Our traveling habits have tired us.Can you give us a room with a view?”

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William WordsworthWhen all at once I saw a crowd,A host, of golden daffodils;Beside the lake, beneath the trees,Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Paradise Lost by John MiltonEarth felt the wound; and Nature from her seat,

Sighing, through all her works, gave signs of woe.

Feel free to share your finished poems with us! [email protected]

AnswersThe answers for some of the tasks are on the next few slides.

As a lot of our English work is creative, it is not possible to give answers for every task as everyone will have come up with different ideas for their writing/sentences.

If you are unsure on any of the answers, or want to check your answers to creative work, please email the Year 5 team.
