THE OUTDOORSGREAT“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized

people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a neces-sity.” ― John Muir, influential naturalist, author, and early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States of America.

The Journal of the American Heart Association recently published findings that touted the “Nature Cure.” People living with the most trees, grass, and other greenery around them had lower levels of the stress hormone epinephrine than those in less green neighborhoods, a University of Louisville study found.

If you don’t live in a green area, spending time in a local park or natural area can also have health benefits, other research showsx. So do your health a favor and get outdoors.

Whether you’re hiking a trail in North Cheyenne Cañon or rafting down the Arkansas River; whether you’re mountain biking in Ute Valley Park or rock climbing in Garden of the Gods – each adventure can take the edge off a day and make you feel good, inside and out, whole again.

Outdoor Recreation even offers an opportunity for parents to get out with infants and toddlers. Plus, they’ve added opportunities for women-only trips: hiking, rock climbing and intro to backpacking. A full list of day trips is at https://www.21fss.com/about/outdoor-recreation/day-trips/

And for the real adventure hounds, there will be skydiving and both a 14er planning class and an ex-pedition planning class.

To paraphrase John Muir, ‘The mountains are call-ing and you must go.’ Peterson’s Outdoor Recreation team can show you the way.

A new funding initiative is coming down the pipe this year in response to Air Force Chief of Staff (CSAF) General Goldfein’s letter to the Airmen titled, “The Beating Heart of the Air Force…Squadrons!” UNITE will be the fourth leg of the Recharge for Resiliency (R4R) program and is aimed at giving Squadron Commanders the op-portunity and support to execute a unit cohesion activity for their Airmen (both military and civil-ian). The intent is to help strengthen the squadron culture while also taking care of the Airmen.

Air Force Services Activity (AFSVA) along with the imbedded Community Cohesion Coordinator (C3) will be able to offer each identified squad-ron a list of ready to execute programs or help the Commander develop a custom activity to better reach their Airmen. Commanders or their desig-nated representative are encourage to reach out to Peterson’s new C3, Mr. Tim Wise at 719-556-8029 to start planning their unit cohesion activity today.
