The number of letters and the starting letter of the answer are in brackets after each clue.

Now, order your answers alphabetically in the grid below:

CLOZE TEST TIMEThis month’s Cloze test is based about the recent discovery of the world’s tallest tropical tree. We’ve made it a bit trickier by taking out 10 words. This is called a Cloze test. Read through the words in the black box first and make sure you understand them. Then, read through the article. Make sure you think about the best place to put a word, not the first

place. Careful as you go, as some words may fit in a more than one place, while other words will only suit one.

World’s Tallest Tropical TreeThe tallest tropical tree in the __________ (1) was discovered, climbed and measured in April 2019. It was found in the Danum Valley Conservation Area in Sabah, a Malaysian state on the __________ (2) of Borneo. The yellow meranti tree is 100.8m tall and has been named Menara which is the Malaysian word for tower.Yellow meranti forests in the area were laser scanned from the air in 2018. Scientists from English __________ (3) at Nottingham and Oxford built up 3D images of the treetops and picked out the really tall trees. However, the trees are measured the old-fashioned way – someone must __________ (4) to the top and drop a measuring tape to the ground below.Unding Jami, a research assistant with the South East Asia Rainforest Research Partnership, climbed to the top of Menara on January 6, 2019. The climb took three __________ (5) to complete and Unding had to battle strong winds and heavy rain as he approached the top. ‘It was scary and windy, but honestly the view from the top was __________ (6). I don't know what to say other than it was very, very, very amazing,’ Unding said.Yellow meranti trees are a highly endangered species. They continue to be cut down in huge numbers in Malaysia with their __________ (7) often used to make moulds for pouring concrete and for plywood. This affects the environment as each tree is home to over 1,000 insects, __________ (8) and other plant species.

Interesting FactsMenara weighs around 80 tonnes. The Danum Valley Conservation Area protects Borneo’s __________ (9) orangutan, clouded leopard and forest elephants. The tallest tree in the world at present is called Hyperion. It is a giant sequoia, is just over 115m tall and is in Redwood National Park in __________ (10), USA.

EDIT THE EDITOR!As May 9, is Europe Day, this month’s Editing Activity is about the European

Union. Read through the article and see if you can spot the 10 spelling mistakes, the 5 missing capital letters and the 5 missing full stops.

10 SPELLING MISTAKES 5 CAPITAL MISTAKES 5 FULL STOPS

The European Union (EU) is a politickal and economic union of 28 member states Where the Council of Europe concerns itself with Human Rights issues and culture, the eu tends to focuss more on the business end of things – the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital, while also drawing up laws on trade, agraculture, fisheries, and regional development.

one of the biggest changes that the EU braught about since its foundashion in 1958 (it was then known as the European Economic Community or the EEC) was monetary union – the interduction of the Euro Before this, every country had their own currancy (Ireland’s was knowing as the punt). this massive change began in 1999 and took three years to fully roll out. Now, 19 of the 28 members use the Euro as their official currency

The European Union resembels a country’s goverment in that it is split into departments or bodies – 7 in total They are known as the institutions of the European Union and are called the European Council, the Council of the European Union, the European Parliament, the european Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Central Bank, and the European Court of Auditors.

The three most senior leaders of the EU at present are Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, donald Tusk, President of the European Council, and Antonio Tajani, President of the European Parliament

HAVE YOUR SAY!Based on the news from this month's edition, we want you to think about some of the issues that may arise. Remember, when you are trying to put forward an opinion, or an argument, make sure you know your facts and figures and be clear in how you feel about a certain topic and why. Here are some questions and statements you and your class might like to consider thinking about and discussing. Some you will agree with, some you won't!

People who have proven Irish heritage should have to pay a portion of their taxes to the Irish government to help

keep the country operating well!

Climate Change is not real. It was invented by governments so they can charge more taxes and take in

more money.

Every major historical building in the world should have a full-time fire officer employed so that a fire can be detected at the earliest stages, thus preventing it

engulfing the building or destroying it. It would cost a fraction of the rebuild and restoration costs in the event of

a fire.

Greta Thunberg is a shining example to us all but, at the end of the day, she is just a kid. What government likes

being told what to do by a 16-year-old?

Bees are really important in nature. We should make a law that says anyone who kills a bee or destroys a

beehive should be prosecuted.

Irish zoos welcomed newborns this year. However, it is not right to hold animals captive -- they should all be

released back into their natural habitats.

DRAMA TIME!Each month, we invite you and your class to base your drama lesson on a theme from The Primary Planet.

This month, we visit the art gallery in possession of da Vinci's The Last Supper. For your drama exercise this month, we're inviting you to stage a short drama based on a tour to view the famous artwork. Your creative drama piece should try and convey to your audience the importance of looking after these national and international treasures and how one person's actions can snowball into scenes of devastating consequences!

We've given some suggestions below.

CHARACTER SUGGESTIONS:

A tour guide in the Convent of Santa

Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy -- home of da Vinci's famous The Last Supper -- on their first day on the

job

CHARACTERSUGGESTIONS:

A tourist who is very hard of hearing --

and cannot seem to hear the tour guide's

instructions very well

CHARACTERSUGGESTIONS:

The manager of the gallery, who is on

hand to see how the new recruit is doing and make sure that

he/she is doing their job properly

CHARACTERSUGGESTION:

A tourist who has very poor eyesight

and who demands to get up closer to the painting so they can see the finite details

of the artwork

CHARACTERSUGGESTION:

A security guard in the gallery

GADGET GEEKS!

Look at the amazing tech on page 22: The Eewriter -- a tablet that allows you to write with a pen that converts screen typing into storable online file formats.

Imagine that you are trying to get people to invest in your gadget, where you have combined tech and education. Think carefully about the words you use to make your presentation persuasive. Present a drawing of the prototype when you have your writing completed. And remember, you'll be selling this to teachers and principals -- a tough bunch to convince :)

What is the gadget?

Why would someone buy it?

Persuasive Language Examples:

Phenomenon High-tech Unbelievable Family Friendly Accurate Ultimate Effortless

What tech is involved?

How much will it be?

How does it make the original item (if there is one) better?

Why should the school spend their money on this?
