NEWSLETTER
www.rathmichael.anglican.dublin.anglican.org
My dear Parishioners and other friends,
I had the honour of officiating at the marriage of Scott
Nelson and Beverly Walsh in Kill O’ the Grange church
recently. There the couple chose to include the following
scripture in the ‘Message’ translation.
Romans 12:9-16 The Message (MSG)
“9-10 Love from the centre of who you are; don’t fake it. Run
for dear life from evil; hold on for dear life to good. Be
good friends who love deeply; practice playing second
fiddle. 11-13 Don’t burn out; keep yourselves fuelled and aflame.
Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant. Don’t
quit in hard times; pray all the harder. Help needy
Christians; be inventive in hospitality.
14-16 Bless your enemies; no cursing under your breath.
Laugh with your happy friends when they’re happy; share
tears when they’re down. Get along with each other; don’t
be stuck-up. Make friends with nobodies; don’t be the great
somebody.”
For two decades or so now we use the NRSV in
Rathmichael (inclusive language) New Revised Stand-
ard Version (Anglicised Edition) Oxford.
“9 Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is
good; 10 love one another with mutual affection; outdo one
another in showing honour. 11 Do not lag in zeal, be ardent
in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in
suffering, persevere in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of
the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse
them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those
who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another; do not be
haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be
wiser than you are.”
Whilst ole man, me, was reared to the King James
Version (KJV)
“9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that
which is evil; cleave to that which is good. 10 Be
kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love;
in honour preferring one another; 11 Not slothful in
business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing
instant in prayer; 13 Distributing to the necessity of
saints; given to hospitality.
14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse
not. 15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep
with them that weep. 16 Be of the same mind one to-
ward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to
men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.”
________
Language and the meanings within language change,
and I have my own beef about the word ‘IS’ trampling
on ‘ARE’ all over the place where so many ‘plurals’
are ‘ISd’ of late, even by professional broadcasters!!
LANGUAGE: Sunday by Sunday I lead worship
which includes “But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon
us, miserable offenders………” when written,
‘miserable’ meant ‘in need of mercy’.
“….all Bishops and Curates, that they may both by
their life and doctrine set forth thy true and LIVELY
Word, and rightly administer thy holy Sacraments:”
(life giving Word)
We have a Gospel to proclaim. And St. Paul sure puts
up a challenge in some of his epistles to decipher his
meaning. The MESSAGE does not claim to be an
accurate translation of the New Testament, but one
could do worse than to refer to it for some passages of
the scriptures.

If anyone requires a lift - please contact Vivien Reid

It's that time of year again when there's a bit of a stretch in the evenings so we can meet up, and take advantage of the extra hours of daylight!
Our "walk and talk" evening will take place on Thursday 25th May.
We've done Sandycove and Greystones so the location this time will be Dalkey. It's packed with historic and literary sights while the scenery is second to none and it's only 2 stops from Shankill on the Dart! We'll meet at the Dart Station at 7.30pm and after the roughly 45 minute walk (stroll) we will rest and reward ourselves with a retreat to a cosy venue for some refreshments.
Please let me know if you will be joining us (by May) so that we have an idea of numbers. It's always good to see new faces so if you are new to the parish please join us - we would love to meet you.
So - put the dads on standby for babysitting and if you have any questions please get in touch.

THE EASTER VESTRY
The Easter Vestry took place on Sunday 26th March 2017 following a service of Morning Prayer.
A well attended meeting received the Treasurer’s overview of the Parish Accounts, which are included in this News-letter, and Geoffrey Perrin advised on the situation regarding the laying of a new pathway around the church grounds to facilitate people with walkers and children’s buggies. It is hoped to keep inconvenience to a minimum while this work is being carried out.
The rector advised that Marian Conboy is his Church Warden and Geoffrey Perrin is his Glebe Warden.
Voting took place for the Select Vestry and as this is a triennial year voting also took place for Parochial and Supple-mental Nominators and Diocesan and Supplemental Synodsmen and the results are as follows:

CHURCH OF IRELAND SAFEGUARDING TRUST
The Church of Ireland Safeguarding Trust has been put in place, and is adhered to by this parish
“To set standards for the welfare of all children sharing in its ministry with a view to
protecting them from physical, sexual and emotional harm.”
Each person working with children in this parish, Mums, Parents, Babies and Toddlers, Sunday Crèche, Sunday Club and Youth Groups, must be Garda Vetted and have completed an evening “training session” with Ms. Olive Good, Diocesan Regulator for Safeguarding Trust.
There will be a training evening on
Monday 8th May in St Matthias' Parish Centre, Ballybrack 7.45 pm - 9.45 pm
and this is an invitation to any parent/parishioner (not necessarily involved in the groups above) but who would be interested in educating themselves about how the Trust works, to come along to St. Matthias’ on that evening.
If you are intending to be there - please let me know by Friday 5th - [email protected]

CONFIRMATION
A large congregation of family members, friends,
parishioners and well-wishers, filled Christ Church,
Bray, on Saturday 1st April, when The Archbishop
of Dublin, The Most Reverend Michael Jackson,
confirmed boys and girls from several parishes in
the area. This service was preceded on Friday
evening by a Service of Light which was very
moving for the candidates and their parents and
godparents. From Rathmichael parish we congrat-
ulate Amelia Dolan, Jessica Knatchbull, Lidia Uhlar
Vincente, Tom Brigg, Vincenzo Grosso, Daniel
White and Callum Hewat and wish them every
blessing as they continue their Christian journey.
We also thank our Youth Worker, Jonathan Byford,
for his input with these young people as they
prepared for this occasion.
GRIP AND SLIP YOUTH GROUPS
Our two Youth Groups are running each week.
Each youth group takes place on alternative Satur-
day nights. Grip is for secondary school aged
teens at 7.00 - 9 p.m. and Slip is for any child in
5th or 6th class at 6.30 p.m. - 8.00 p.m.
It was a pleasure meeting the Confirmation group
and I hope they will continue to attend the Youth
Group.
Please keep our youth programs in your prayers

youth groups, please contact me at Phone: 083

RATHMICHAEL PARISH NATIONAL SCHOOL
Aoife Munn came to the school and planted tomato plants with the
classes. She works for Windyridge Garden Centre and regularly comes
in to teach the children about growing and the environment. This is
sponsored by the Garden Centre. They supply all the compost, pots
and seeds required. The children always enjoy gardening and working
outside when they can.
During our Seachtain na Gaeilge we had a ceolchoirm or concert with
the whole school. Each class performed songs, poetry, dance and
played instruments. It was lovely
to see this at every level. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The
Irish language was enjoyed by all.
Some of the classes entered a Scríobh Leabhar or book writing com-
petition for Seachtain na Gaeilge. Five of our pupils won awards and
attended an award ceremony on 29th
March in City West Education
Centre. They received certificates, prizes and goody bags.
5th
Class performed an Environmental Musical in the Lexicon Theatre
in Dunlaoghaire. They performed for five schools. This was a great experience for them. The class teacher,
Suzanne Ferris and our music teacher, Naomi Clarkson led the class. Performance is part of the curriculum
and I believe important to promote self-esteem and confi-
dence building. Well done 5th
Class!
1st
Class put on a Spring Show. They performed heart lift-
ing songs full of hope and love. It certainly raised every-
one’s spirits.
6th
Class
have been working
on an Entrepre-
neurial project.
They held their own
Dragon’s Den using outsiders and teachers as judges. It was de-
cided that the best project was the production of Glow Pencil
Cases. These were produced by the teacher and the class and
show cased in the school before going to their owners. It taught
the children a lot about costing, finance, production and sales.
The money made went towards a charity and a bus for one of
their tours.
Caroline Senior, Principal.
The Rector and Sonia hosted an afternoon Tea Party for the “babies” who have been baptised over the past few years,
together with their parents, brothers and sisters, on Sunday 23rd April in The Erck Hall.
Karl the Clown came along and did some face-painting, played games and modelled a lot of balloons. The children had great
fun and the adults got to know each other too!
Please put the date in your diary and tell all your
friends and neighbours all about it!
Green fingered people! Please plant up, pot up and grow
anything and everything for our plant stall.
Anyone growing fruit during the summer months - we
would love it for our jam making sessions!
Full details of all stallholders and what they need will be in
the June Newsletter. Have you an idea for a Stall? Please
let us know. We are always open to suggestions.
