President Greg Hipple Planting season is upon us here in the Midwest. Spring calving is still under- way and everything is green again. The annual renewal of life. Pat and I have just returned from our first trip to New England where we attended the Spring Council Meeting, held in conjunction with the National Belted Galloway Sale, and the New England Galloway Group’s events that surrounded the sale. We saw things for the first time throughout the entire trip. The history and pristine sights were everywhere. The farms that so graciously gave of their time during a busy few days made our trip complete. Just an- other example of the generosity I have expe- rienced throughout my tenure on Council! The cooperation of the participants in the sale, and all the events held for the youth Thursday through Sunday in Fryeburg, Maine were exemplary. My congratulations to all involved for being such remarkable examples for everyone. The Council meeting held at Fryeburg, Maine every three years, was another busy meeting with a full agenda. I have to thank all in attendance for taking the time, effort, and expense to travel, participate, and tend to the business of the Society. Council made, in my opinion, major advancements towards continuing the fulfillment of the mission state- ment of the Belted Galloway Society, “The object is to promote the Belted Galloway breed of cattle, to preserve the purity of the breed by maintaining pedigree records and data, to disseminate information relative to said breed of cattle and to carry on all legal and proper ac- tivities to effectuate the primary purpose of the corpora- tion.” All the details of the business conducted by your members of council appear elsewhere in this edition. Enjoy the rest of spring everyone. I hope to see you at one of the various upcoming summer events hosted by the regional groups throughout the country. About Classifieds

Your classified’s required contact information — name, farm,

location, phone and email. All classified ads are automatically placed on beltie.org with a two-month limit on classified insertions. Photos are $10 placed on beltie.org only. Email ads to [email protected] or by fax (608) 527-4811 or phone (608) 220-1091. We encourage members to submit ads the last two weeks of the month.

About bulls … Before advertising a young male be sure he is well

conformed, tracks properly, has good legs and feet, and exhibits good weight gains. We should have data available on his birth weight, 205-day weaning weight, and yearling weight. If he's reached breeding age (around 18 months), it's definitely a plus to have his semen checked for quantity and motility, and uniform scrotal development ( two normal sized testicles). Any data available should appear in your advertisement along with his birth date and the names of his sire and dam. It is re-quired that registration numbers be included on bulls advertised for sale in the classifieds.

Belted Galloway Junior

Association

Janie Tripp, Co-Chair of the BGJA

Happy Spring! I just returned from the New Eng-land Belted Galloway Regional Junior National. It is the third year for the event. I was so impressed and proud of our junior members! I am pleased to announce that the second annual BGJA Jackpot Steer show to be held during the Kathi Jurkowski Junior Show in Louisville, KY in November. There will be very lucrative incentives to show a steer at the event. The Grand Champion steer will be awarded a $1000 cash prize and the Reserve will win $500! Also returning to Louisville is the BGJA photog-raphy contest. I hope the membership has enjoyed some of the photos featured in the US Beltie News. Many where part of the 2016 contest. Submit your 1 MB images by email to Joanna Posey at [email protected]. If you have questions contact Joanna at (601) 748-5802. The Belted Galloway Junior Association also has a page on beltie.org. Junior members are welcome to apply for semen through the semen project. The project provides current BGJA members (dues paid) with the opportunity to obtain semen from quality Belted Galloway bulls. The program helps to teach juniors the process of artificial insemina-tion with heat detection, timing and procedures. Members learn management skills and the project encourages hands-on experience from initial breeding to the birth of a calf. As a reminder, lease agreements must be on file with the CLRC by July 1, 2017.

Reminders The Belted Galloway Society is seeking edito-

rials to produce the 2017 Belted Galloway Journal. Please contact Jon Bednarski at [email protected] or (502) 649-8706.

The Beltie Unlimited Show in Tipton, Iowa is quickly approaching. Classes and entry forms are available on beltie.org for the June 5, 2017 event. All Belted Galloway enthusiasts are welcome! Entry deadline is June 1, 2017. Contact Greg Hipple (319) 430-6664 or [email protected].

27th National Belted Galloway Sale Randy Hall, President of New England Galloway Group It may have been a cool, dreary weekend in Fryeburg, ME but that certainly didn’t hold back the Belted Galloway faithful. Old and new breeders alike convened on the Fryeburg Fairgrounds to take part in the annual 27th National Belted Galloway Sale. The sale is held in conjunction with the Fryeburg Youth Show and Northeast Regional Jr. National Belted Galloway Show. What a special weekend it was! The sale results are as follows: 11 Open Heifers averaged $2,281 3 Bred Females averaged $3,366 3 Bulls/Prospects averaged $2,300 11 Embryos averaged $ 573 per embryo 40 Straws of Semen averaged $ 71 per straw The Sale offered 17 Live Lots and 8 Genetic Lots and totaled $51,900. For the first time ever, the Tyler Cup Award for the Highest Selling Open Heifer was a tie between Moonshadow Farms (ME) and Al-dermere Farm (ME). Moonshadow Nina and Aldermere Dora each sold for $3,000 respectively. Moonshadow Nina was purchased by the Romani Family of Harmony Meadows Farm (RI) and Alder-mere Dora was purchased by Judy & Jessica Sartell of Dymonds Farm (PA). The Highest Selling Bred Female in the sale was Pine View Blos-som, consigned by Pine View Farm (ME). Pine View Blossom sold for $3,800 to Marty & Janie Tripp of Magnolia Trace Farm (MS). The Highest Selling Bull in this year’s sale was Orion Detroit, con-

signed by Orion Farm (NH) and purchased by Morgan & Craig Badeau of Colby Woods Cattle (ME). In addition to our sale, we also held a Silent Auction benefiting the New England Galloway Youth Group. We are proud to report that nearly $1,750 was raised! This money will go towards youth events

and awards throughout the show season. Thank you to all of those donated to this fundraiser and to Victo-ria Oatley for her efforts in organizing such a suc-cessful auction! On behalf of the New England Galloway Group (NEGG), I would like to extend a special thank you to all of the people who make this event possible year after year - our consignors, our buyers, and of course, our volunteers. Additionally, we need to thank Scot and Chris Adams (ME), along with Dustin James (NY), for their hard work in managing the event.

We would also like to thank Thomas Carper (IN) for continuing to be our auctioneer of choice. He certainly adds another element to our sale. Additionally, we commend his wife Cassie Carper for all of her hard work with the DV Auction broadcast. It is a blessing to offer such a high quality option to our bidders at home. We have had more compliments this year than ever before! The NEGG would also like to thank Diane Gushee (ME) for her efforts with the Northeast Regional Jr. National Belted Galloway Show and Fryeburg Youth Show. The youth of the Northeast are truly lucky to have such an incredible event to attend each spring. Diane’s hard work and dedication is second to none. With everyone’s help we were able to hold yet another successful event and we look forward to many more years to come. We will see you all next spring as we hold our 28th National Belted Gallo-way Sale & 4th Northeast Regional Jr. National Belted Galloway Show!
