Lunchroom Supervisors Needed
K. Wainwright
As we move into our last two months of this school year, the calendar is filled
with many activities and events. The guidance and support given to our
students by our staff continues to be tremendous! The Glen Dhu team provides
so many opportunities for our children: opportunities that reflect good
citizenship, high standard of academics, strong character, health and fitness,
lifelong learning and unforgettable memories. Please take a moment to thank
staff members for all they do for our students. Going above and beyond the call
of duty is commonplace for our staff at Glen Dhu.
Our bands, Choir, music ensembles and French students made for a most
memorable “Café Dhu - Celebrating the Arts”. We would like to thank the
classes that donated items for our baskets and students, staff, parents and
guardians who purchased tickets to take home a basket and support our
school’s music and athletics programs.
Also coming in May is Provincial Testing. The primary EQAO test is written by
grade three students May 24th to 26th and the junior test is written by the grade
six students May 29th to 31st. Other events going on in May include track and
field, soccer, and lacrosse to mention only a few of the activities.
A wide variety of factors are taken into consideration when teachers meet to
discuss student class placements for the upcoming year. Specific considerations
related to individual student’s academic and emotional needs, social skills, peer
interaction, male and female balance and learning styles as well as Ministry and
Board criteria. Requests for specific teachers, and straight grades will not be
accepted.
Parental input may be considered about their child (ren) special needs or
programming. Final decisions on student placement rest with administration and
staff as a whole. Our goal is to meet the needs of all our students. Due to various
circumstances, it is sometimes impossible to honour individual requests. Parents
wishing to have input into the placement process can write to Mr. Wainwright in
confidence. Requests must be received in writing by May 19th .
From all the staff at Glen Dhu we wish you all the best for a great spring. Thank
you for making our learning environment so positive. Be well, and all the best in
the month of May!

Lunchroom Supervisors
Needed!
We are in real need of people who can be back-up
lunchroom supervisors when our regular supervisors are
absent. If you would like to be added to our list of
supply supervisors, please call Mr. Leigh at (905) 668-
8779. The pay is just over $12 an hour and you would
be responsible for supervising students during the lunch
hour (11:40 – 12:40). This role includes 40 minutes of
yard supervision outside. Also, if you are interested in
permanent lunchroom supervisor work as it comes
available, we would love to hear from you.
In the Durham District School Board, French
Immersion begins in Grade 1. Registration for
the program is ongoing. If you plan to
register your child, please call Glen Dhu to let
us know your plans as that is helpful in our
planning for next year. Also, please call Julie
Payette P.S., the French Immersion school for
our area, to begin the registration process.
Kindergarten Registration for
September 2017
We continue to take registrations for
kindergarten. If you know someone in our
area who has a child who will be four years
old by the end of 2017, please ensure that
they have called the school to begin the
registration process.
It is hard to believe, but we
are well into our planning for
the 2017-2018 school
year. We are in the early
stages of the staffing process
at this time. It is important to
know if your child is not
returning to Glen Dhu next
year. Except for our grade 8
students, who we know are
leaving, please call the office
at 905-668-8779 if you will be
moving over the summer.
We will be determining draft
class lists in early June. Many
factors are considered when
placing students in classes,
including learning needs and
gender balance. While we do
not accept requests for
specific teachers, we are
happy to consider your
input. If there is something we
should know about how we
can best meet your child’s
needs when we are
considering placement next
year, please send a letter to
Mr. Wainwright by May 19th.

Library Learning Goal
As we come to the end of the year, it is important to recognize and celebrate how each student has
improved as a reader. Therefore, May’s Library Learning Goal is to identify and explain the
strategies students found most helpful before, during, and after reading, and explain how they can
use these strategies to improve as readers.
Success Criteria
We will know we have met our goal when we…
Can identify and explain the strategies we used before reading (e.g. making predictions, asking
questions)
Can identify and explain the strategies we used during reading (e.g. visualizing, making
inferences)
Can identify and explain the strategies we used after reading (e.g. summarizing, making
connections)

GRADE 3 AND 6 CLASSES
The Education Quality and Accountability
Office (EQAO) will be conducting the
assessments of Reading, Writing and
Mathematics involving all Grade 3 and Grade 6
students throughout the province of Ontario.
The assessment will be held over a three day
period for each grade. It is very important that
your Grade 3 and/or 6 child be in attendance at
school on the following assessment dates:
Grade 3: Wednesday, May 24th, Thursday,
May 25th and Friday, May 26th.
Grade 6: Monday, May 29, Tuesday, May

In order for students to achieve their best
results on the EQAO assessment, it is important
that they are well rested and arrive to school on
time during assessment dates. The SCC will be
providing a nutritious breakfast for students
writing the assessment.

Mrs. Truckle’s grade 1 students
recently took part in a
“Scientists in School” workshop
about Materials and Structures.
We had the opportunity to
become structural engineers.
We explored a variety of
natural and human-made
materials and learned about
their properties. We learned
about strong shapes that help
up to create stable structures.
We built a tower house for the
three little pigs, and then
tested our framework for
strength and stability. We
explored different fasteners
and had the opportunity to use
real tools. We finished our
afternoon by creating stools
out of newspapers that were
strong enough to hold the
scientist! We had so much fun
and learned so much about
materials and structures.

INTERMEDIATE BADMINTON
On Thursday, April 6th Glen Dhu had 2 students who
qualified for the final four in Durham for badminton. We
travelled up to S.A. Cawker in Port Perry to play in the
Championship Round. Our Coed Team (Erika P. and
Cameron B.) played against Sunderland, Altona Forest
and S.A. Cawker. They won all their games and advanced
to the final championship game. They faced S.A. Cawker.
Unfortunately, they lost to the team they already defeated.
The game went into extra points and they came up short
24-22. What a heartbreaking game! Our Coed Team was
undefeated all season! Mrs. Robson is extremely proud of
these 2 individuals. They displaced dignity, class and
exemplary sportsmanship! They brought home a pennant
to be proudly displayed on our gym wall! Erika P. and
Cameron B. are the 2nd best Coed Team out of 108
schools in Durham!
Mrs. Robson would like to thank all team members again
for a fun and great season! She misses all our badminton
practices in the gym!
