Yet another chapter year is flying by, but the June meeting with all its special events is just around the corner. Kim will kick off the festivities at that meeting by giving us a preview of the program schedule for next year. It’s always fun and exciting to see the new pieces that we get to choose from! After the business meeting, Kim will be wrapping up our ongoing project for the year, Kathy Rees’ “Summer Logs” (the fourth and final piece of this series) and then Nancy Hartman will be giving us tips for completing “Holiday Delights Independence Day, “ another Needle Delights Originals piece. This is a perfect project to lead us into summer and put us in the mood for fireworks! After the project portion of the meeting is the annual UFO Challenge. The winners in this year’s challenge will receive a “STITCH” magnet , an Accoutrement Designs product that has recently been offered for sale by ANG. The “others” (there are no losers – let’s just call them people with other stitching priorities) will be required to pay $10 to the Chapter. I’m still hoping that I’ll be in the winner’s circle this year, but it’s by no means a slam-dunk at this point. We’ll then move into next year’s Challenge. The general guidelines are consistent with prior years: 1) Please bring in three project as candidates; 2) ANG/CANG projects are encouraged but not required; 3) Any CANG workshop piece automatically qualifies; and, 4) There are no strict size requirements but, if you bring in an ornament, rest assured that it will not be selected. Chapter members at the meeting that day will select your Challenge piece by a show of hands. Please feel free to participate in the Challenge even if you will not be able to attend the June meeting. To participate, simply email pictures and any pertinent information about each of your three Challenge-piece candidates (name, designer, etc.) to Pat Warren (patwarren10817@gmail.com). Pat will then bring those photos to the meeting, we’ll take our vote, and then Pat will let you know after the meeting which piece was selected. In June of the following year, you can also let us know via email and a photograph if you completed your Challenge piece or not. Afterwards, we will have our annual luncheon, which will once again be hosted by the Chapter. We will enjoy catered sandwiches along with assorted salads, sides and dessert. Please note that, due to both the Challenge and the luncheon, the June meeting will likely run longer than normal. I would expect the luncheon portion of the meeting to start somewhere between 12 and 12:30. For planning purposes, we would like to know approximately how many members expect to attend the luncheon, so we will have a sign-up sheet available at the May meeting. If you won’t be at the May meeting, but would like to attend the luncheon, please RSVP to me via email and, at the same time, let me know whether you have any special dietary requirements. Also, please feel free to bring your Challenge pieces to the May meeting, especially if they are not yet completed. It would be fun to see how everyone is doing, and to gauge our collective progress towards earning those fun “STITCH” magnets! Perhaps a little moral support is all you need to get you over the finish line. Finally, as a reminder, our newsletter is now available by email. If you would like to be on the email distribution (in lieu of receiving a snail mail copy), please contact Cindy Underwood at [email protected], or, alternatively, let her know if you see her at a meeting. I’m looking forward to seeing all of you at our last two meetings of the year. Until then, I will be madly working on “Dreaming of Geometry”! Ongoing Project –Tapestry Treasures—

DebBee’s Designs

Now that we’ve finished the seasonal logs from Kathy

Rees, I’ve tried to find a design that may also now

entice those of you who just didn’t buy into the

popular Logs series. Tapestry Treasures was

intended to be a teaching piece, but didn’t get into

her portfolio as she designed this before she really got

started teaching.

Tapestry Treasures is filled with all sorts of fun stitches

and patterns, many of them invented by Jean Hilton.

Eight distinct motif areas provide plenty of challenge

for experienced stitchers, while the thorough

instructions and diagrams guide novice stitchers

through step by step. There are 4 colorways, one for

each season. The cover pattern shows the Summer

colorway. All four colorways will be listed here, in the

newsletter. (See Page 4)

Cost: $39.00

September 23, 2017 –Sunny Skies—Nancy’s

Needle

This is a new design that came out in April. While

called “Sunny Skies” it definitely has an autumnal look

to it! These quilt blocks are fun to do and aren’t taxing

on the brain, so they always are popular with the

Guild!

Cost: $15.25

Workshops

Spring is here!! We have two great workshops to make

your spring fun. Tony Minieri will be with us at the end of

May teaching Austin Patch. And Jennifer Riefenberg is

joining us in early May for our last vegetable piece,

Beets. We always work hard to make sure our mix of

workshops includes a range of kit costs and a mix of

new and existing teachers. As always please let us

know if you would like to see a certain piece or

teacher for one of our workshops, we are always

looking for new ideas. Deb Forney was fabulous this

fall.

A quick reminder about workshop policies: if you sign

up for a workshop, you must attend at least one full

day of the workshop. On occasion, the designer may

specify that attendance both days is required. If the

workshop is a pilot class you must attend both days.

Please be sure to check your schedule before signing

up for a workshop to ensure you will be able to attend.

Once you have been included in a workshop’s final

count, the $25.00 workshop deposit is non-refundable

unless your spot is filled from a workshop waiting list.

All sign-ups must be by mail, sent to Pat Warren 10817

Martindale Drive Westchester, IL 60154-5020 and be

accompanied by a $25.00 deposit. A date, on or

before which the workshop coupon may be mailed

and considered as a first day registration is indicated

on every coupon and published in this newsletter.

Every coupon (with deposit) post-marked on or before

the designated first day date will be considered a first

day member registration. The deadline date to register

will also be shown on the coupon and published in the

newsletter. Workshops that have not filled will be open

to non-members after this deadline date. Non-

members will be asked to pay a $30.00 non-member

fee in addition to the workshop cost.

The cost of our workshops includes many things. First

there is the kit fee for the class that is really determined

by the size of the piece and the number and type of

threads. There is a large range in these costs from

$90.00 all the way up to $220.00. We try to offer

workshops with a variety of kit fees each year. Other

costs include the instructor’s teaching fee for two days,

the instructor’s travel costs which generally includes

airfare and ground transportation to their home airport,

the instructor’s room and board for the weekend, if

applicable and the Park District room rental fee. We

know that workshop prices have increased over the

years and we do our best to minimize all costs so

workshops remain affordable for the guild.

Keep in mind that you can sign up for any open

workshop shown below as soon as your receive this

newsletter. If you are going to wait and sign up later

make sure you keep in mind the deadline date.

Riefenberg

Jennifer Riefenberg is a Certified Teacher from the

National Academy of Needlearts (NAN). She has

taught many programs for ANG and EGA and teaches

classes at TACtile, the Textile Arts Center. Chicago

ANG is excited to welcome Jennifer back to teach this

wonderful piece that is also being taught at Seminar in

New Orleans.

Beets charm and glow with the warm violet red against

the vibrant earth. Beets is the third, and final, in a series

of root vegetables emerging in bright, warm colors

from the summer earth; following Carrots and

Radishes. Beets adds another dimensional feature to

the series with needlelace techniques for the beet

tops. Continue lessons in working with color started

in Carrots and moving around the color wheel as your

garden grows. Another vegetable emerges from your

garden - this time, it is Beets.

We are so happy to welcome Toni back to Chicago

ANG. She has taught at ANG national seminars

multiple times and is a prolific designer which is so

wonderful. We are fortunate enough to be able to

offer one of those designs, Fire & Ice, as a workshop

next fall. It is a amazing piece. Toni holds Teachers’

Certification from the National Academy of Needlearts

(NAN) and is currently serving on their board as NAN

coordinator

This dramatic depiction of Fire & Ice flames the

imagination with an inferno of hot combustion & ice

crystals. You will explore many different shades &

textures of red threads as you create the towering red

polygons that burst into flames; these include Gloriana

silk, cotton, Planet Earth silk, Thread Gatherers cotton,

Empress Silk, Treasure Braid & Petite Silk Lame Braid. On

the beautiful smoke gray Congress cloth the ice

crystals form above the flames in vertical

parallelogram shapes using purple, green and metallic

white threads including Petite Silk Lame Braid, Sparkle!
