BEESTON
THE UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE
May 2017
The monthly bulletin is designed to provide members with information
for the months in between the quarterly newsletter. Anything that is
worthy of passing on to members for a short sharp read just to keep you
all abreast of what’s happening in U3A nationally, regionally and in our
own area. It will be emailed to members on a monthly basis, and some
printed copies will be made available for members who don’t have email
addresses, but who can collect them at the monthly meeting.
Please let me know of any announcements you may wish to distribute
to everyone. Celia Billau [email protected]
Information is also made available on our web site which is managed by
Steve Austin https://beestonu3a.org.uk/ where further details may be
found.
The quarterly newsletter will continue to be emailed to all members
and sent out by post to members with no email address. Printed copies
may be obtained at Open Meetings for a small charge (50p). This is edit-
ed by Marie Potts [email protected]
But it’s not all about us telling you.
Discussion between members, asking questions and giving feedback
should be encouraged, as that makes everyone feel involved.
Join our Facebook group. It’s a closed group and it will be closely moni-
tored to avoid any unwanted attention from outsiders. Search Beeston
U3A while logged into your Facebook account. You need to request
membership.
Go to the forum on the Beeston U3A web site https://
beestonu3a.org.uk/beeston-u3a-forum/ to add your thoughts and sug-
gestions.
Calling all volunteers for 28th May
Macmillan urgently need volunteers to help out during the Nottingham 10k run on Sunday 28th May (bank holiday weekend).
It’s just a couple of hours cheering runners or being a marshal.
We have to have a minimum of 20 volunteers for this event otherwise the organisers might fine us! If any of your group could
spare a couple of hours for us this event we would very much appreciate it.

A chance for Beeston U3A Members to Help Nottingham Trent University with Exciting
and Important Fashion Projects
Steve Austin and Richard Eddleston have been working to forge links with local universities and colleges. This has
proved easier said than done. While all universities and colleges want to work with local communities, relation-
ships can only be built up slowly through involvement in projects that are of mutual interest and benefit. Two pro-
jects have now come along with Nottingham Trent University which will give Beeston U3A the opportunity to start
building these links. Both are in the fashion area. The first one is to help study a problem which most women come
across and the second one relates to the challenges both men and women face with particular medical conditions.
FASHIONING FIT
Are you a woman over the age of 55 who finds it difficult to buy desirable well-fitting clothing? FASHIONING FIT is a
PhD research project exploring viable solutions, and Nottingham Trent needs your help.
The potential economic value of women over the age of 55 is considerable. In the UK, there are over 9,300,000
women who fall into this age profile, by 2030 you are projected to reach 15.5 million. However, research and anec-
dotes show the clothing industry really doesn’t seem to be able to adequately respond to your needs.
Allison Waite, who is leading the FASHIONING FIT project, is 49 years old and has worked in the Fashion Knitwear
industry since 1991. During her career, she has designed Knitwear for most well-known high-street retailers past
and present.
Her philosophy is that clothing is about who you are and how you feel. Fashion is a key factor in feeling good about
yourself and that means being able to dress in a way that makes you, feel like you. Age shouldn’t define personal
style!
Her Qualifications include both a first Degree and a Masters in Fashion Knitwear and alongside her research, teach-
es at Undergraduate and Post Graduate Level at Nottingham Trent University.
If you are interested in taking part in this project, please read the attached flier (FASHIONING FIT FLYER) which de-
scribes how it will work and then contact Steve Austin [email protected] who is co-ordinating the pro-
ject with Nottingham Trent University.
A CHANCE TO RE-DESIGN FUTURE FASHION
This is the second project with Nottingham Trent University.
The university is looking to speak with people living with Raynauds, Diabetes, or Arthritis. The purpose of this is to
support research into the understanding of daily challenges associated with these conditions. Should you wish to
take part, you will be working with Lisa Shawgi, a PhD student, who herself lives with a 'hidden disability', Ray-
nauds.
If you are interested in taking part in this project, please read the attached flier (RE-DESIGN FUTURE FASHION) and
then contact Steve Austin [email protected] who is co-ordinating the project with Nottingham Trent
University.
Is anyone interested in playing a gentle game of tennis on grass during the summer? The courts are at the back of Chilwell Memorial Institute on the corner of Chilwell High Road and Meadow Lane. Colin Bradford would be willing to arrange some sessions during the week if anyone would like a bit of physi-cal activity. Please note: it is not covered by the U3A umbrella of insurance.

Our Group Coordinator, Chris Chater , works very hard with the Group Leaders to
ensure that groups have what they need to succeed. With an ever-increasing
membership, and a desire to promote more groups which would appeal to men as
well as women, new ideas for groups are coming in from time to time. The follow-
ing is a list of new groups which are still getting established.
Group organisation
Groups work best when
there is more than one per-
son who leads and organis-
es. The group continues
when the leader cannot be
there and the work load
reduces.
The ethos of U3A is that
members contribute to the
running of the groups they
attend…”for the members,
by the members”.
Grocery shopping research
There is a piece of research which will shortly be carried out to find out about grocery shopping habits among old-
er people. This is being carried out by the National Retail Research Knowledge Exchange Centre, based at Notting-
ham Business School, Nottingham Trent University. This research project is being led by Professor Kim Cassidy.
There will be an online anonymous questionnaire which will be sent out to all members of Beeston U3A, inviting
you to complete the questionnaire. As we are all involved in grocery shopping on a regular basis, I am sure we
would all have plenty to say to the researchers on this topic. Also, these research projects can impact on the gro-
cery retailers significantly, who may decide to alter the way things are done as a result of the findings.
If you have any comments or suggestions which you would like to include in the next Bulletin to be emailed out to all Beeston U3A members, please let me know. Send all contributions to:

Beacon—the U3A computer system
We have been gradually migrating all of our data across to the official U3A computerised system called Beacon, which means we now have a centralised database of members. Our new members application form has been re-designed to fit in with the revised organisation of data. Up until recently, we have not collected information about an emergency contact for all of our members, but having this information stored centrally seems to be a very good idea. For this reason, we would like to collect this information for all of our members. It will also give us an oppor-tunity to update our records for changes of telephone number or email address. A new form will be emailed out and copies will be available at the Open meetings. Please return your details to Margot or Celia.
