Churchyard. Our ancient churchyard has been a peaceful ‘green oasis’ in the bus-tling centre of Havant for many centuries. One of the five Ob-jectives in St Faith’s Mission Development Plan (MDP) (agreed last year) is ‘Enhancing our Environment’, and its aims include: ‘Encourage respect for God’s creation’, ‘Enhance the wildlife value of our churchyard’, and ‘Enhance the churchyard for quiet relaxation and wider community use’. A recent booklet on sale in the church (‘Christian Faith and the Environment’) explains why these are important issues for Christians. Last summer our Churchyard Development Group commissioned a professional

survey by Hampshire Wildlife Trust (financed by two congregation members), which also incorporated data from local naturalist Ralph Hollins (who posts the church-yard page on our website). This found a good diversity of ‘niche habitats’ and wild plants, birds, butterflies, and other creatures including hedgehogs, and concluded that our churchyard is an important sanctuary for wildlife. It is intended to establish a permanent display in the church to encourage understanding and appreciation of this. A balance needs to be struck between: preserving and enhancing the church-yard’s natural beauty and biodiversity; improving access and enabling it to be en-joyed by more people; and providing space for church events. All this is under dis-cussion, both within the church and with outside bodies such as Friends of Havant Cemeteries. Some issues are for the longer term, such as the possibility of providing a long sweeping path with a minimal gradient linking West Street to the area be-hind the church (possibly forming a curved ‘wall’ enclosing a Café Courtyard outside the West door). Other goals are more immediately attainable, e.g., the mainte-nance of the Dewhurst Garden, and arranging for some other areas to be seeded with an attractive wildflower mix. These require us to liaise with Havant Borough Council to agree an appropriate mowing regime (as a ‘closed’ churchyard like ours remains the property of the church but the local authority is legally responsible for its upkeep), and discussions are currently in hand.

Parish Churches of Petersfield Deanery. The churches are carrying out a pilgrimage from Liphook to Portsmouth Cathedral from 30 April to 2 May. It meets at St. Faith’s Church at 10am on Monday 2 May (May Day) for a 10 miles walk along the shore of Portsea Island to the Cathedral for Evensong at 6pm. For further details see their website at www.petersfielddeanery.org.uk/pilgrimage.

Battle of Jutland 100th Anniversary Commemoration. For Jutland’s 100th anniver-sary The Mayor of Havant would like to invite you to a service at St. James Church , Emsworth, on Tuesday 31st May at 11am, to commemorate the heroism of thousands of men, including 14 from Emsworth, who lost their lives whilst serving in the Grand Fleet or the High Seas Fleet.

With such a vast portfolio of issues to be responsible for, the PCC delegates its responsibilities to smaller working groups and committees or individuals with appropriate skills. The members are your representatives. Should you have any questions or require information about the church or its properties then ask any member on the PCC.
