CLASSROOM NEWS

PRESCHOOL--A.M. Flowers have begun to bloom, leaves are beginning to sprout, and preschoolers are springing forth with great new knowledge. This month has been a great one for our students. It has been fun going over some of our listening skills and watching Mrs. Stewart jump around in our classroom demonstrating how things are inside and outside, behind and in front of, etc. Each morning we practice our ABC's and our names in preparation for next year for those entering kindergarten. Preschool hopes to go on several walking field trips over the next weeks, as well as our trip to the Farm at Walnut Creek on May 15. Look for pictures and information to come. Dates to remember are: May 15- Field trip May 20 A.M. & P.M. graduation at 10:00 a.m. We look forward to finishing the year with a bang. Remember if you know of anyone interested in attending Sacred Heart preschool, our spaces are filling very quickly. Encourage them to register soon. They are always welcome to come for a visit or tour.

PRESCHOOL--P.M.

WOW! Can you believe it’s May already! Where has this school year gone? Your children have worked very hard this year, and you should be proud of their accom-plishments. Please continue to work with your children over the summer. There are some great summer programs available, including the Coshocton and West Lafayette libraries, that your child would enjoy. Keep them practicing their letters and sounds, colors, and writing their name. Thanks again for allowing me to work with them this year! I will miss each and every one of them. To my students going on to kindergarten, you will be amazing! Have a GREAT Summer!! Just some important dates to remember:

▪ PM Preschool will have graduation on May 20 at 10:00 a.m. (this will be their last day of school)

▪Field Trip to Walnut Creek Farm on May 15

PRE-KINDERGARTEN--All Day Where did this school year go? It’s been a great year, and we have had lots of fun! As April comes to an end, we are finishing up our alphabet by working on the letters “Ii” “Uu” and “Xx”. We planted flowers for "earth day", and hopefully you have seen the start of them outside of our school building! We have a lot of activities coming up in the month of May. On May 15th we are going on a field trip to Walnut Creek. Parents please remember you must drive your child and accompany us for the field trip. May 21st is pre-kindergarten graduation at 10:00 a.m. Please plan to attend. Your children have been working very hard to impress you! Please be sure to look at your child’s folder each night. There will be many important notes coming home and important dates to remember. We would just like to thank each and every one of you for sharing your children with us this year. What a blessing they have been to us! We hope they have had as much fun as we have!

KINDERGARTEN

Wow! I can’t believe the end of the school year is upon us! The boys and girls have grown so much this year! Thank you for allowing me to spend this special year with your children. We have finished all of the letters of the alphabet now! We will be doing some exercises now in our phonics book to practice all of the letters and sounds we have learned throughout the year. In math we will be finishing up Topic 13 and starting Topic 14 which will be about shapes. We will be talking about both plane shapes and solid shapes. We will then do Topic 14 which will cover location of shapes. That will take us through the rest of the school year. We will continue to practice our writing and breaking words apart through segmenting to hear all of the sounds of the words. In reading we will continue to read books in class and talk about the plots, characters, and settings of the stories along with the physical parts of a book (cover, cover page, etc.) With spring approaching we will be talking about things that are alive (plants and animals)☺. Please mark your calendars for our class mass on May 7th at 9:00 a.m. We will be the readers and gift bearers at the mass. We hope you all can come! Also, graduation for kindergarten will be on May 20th at 1:00 p.m.

FIRST GRADE It is certainly hard to believe that the year is almost over! The first graders have come a long way since August. I am very proud of their work and have enjoyed teaching this class! I still have a lot of material to cover and with the nice weather, May can be very difficult. Spring fever has set in for sure! We will be continuing our classroom routine until the last week of school. Please be sure to keep up the nightly reading and the few students who still have sight words, they need done 2 times a day. We are also working on sentences and stories with more details. Parents can encourage students to add details to their sentences when they are talking. For example, when asking them what they want to drink, have them say in a complete sentence “I would like milk to drink.” Also, if they ask for a shirt, have them ask for the color of the shirt they would like. As they get used to using more words, they will increase their vocabulary, reading, and writing skills. Anyone interested in additional recommendations for summer work, please see me.

SECOND GRADE

Our Class Mass on April 23rd went very well. The practice they took the time to do paid off in smooth and confident reading. Good job! A milestone to remember! The second graders made their First Holy Communion and are now receiving communion at the school masses. They are pleased to be so grown-up to receive Jesus in communion. Help them to make the reception of communion a regular habit on Sundays. Some of the children are writing their names in cursive quite well. We will con-tinue to learn one upper case cursive letter daily until we reach Z. Please have your child practice when “there is nothing to do” in order to maintain this new skill. Our last Topic in math is on telling time. While the children already know the hour and half hour, we will learn to tell time to the minute and use quarter past and 15 minutes before the hour. Additionally, we will make bar graphs and pictograph chart to tally information. Please go onto the Mobymax.com website to practice math daily.

Page 5: May 2015 Newsletter - Sacred Heart Coshocton · Some of the children are writing their names in cursive quite well. We will con-tinue to learn one upper case cursive letter daily

Explore the program to see where reading and language arts practice can help your child. There is an app to go to Mobymax on your cell phone so you can put your child to work practicing their skills when you’re waiting in the car or line with a child who needs to have something to do. Our school field trip is Tuesday, May 5th to the Farm at Walnut Creek. It is fun to see the exotic animals up so close and even allow some to eat from your hand! Our journal writing takes place most days. It is encouraging to see that many students are indenting the paragraph without being reminded, beginning sentences and proper nouns with capital letters and using punctuation to end a sentence. The theme in reading is neighborhoods. We will learn about a barrio, where Jose lives in San Francisco. After that we will draw a map of our own neighborhoods, showing details of the kinds of places that are near our homes. School will be over before we know it! Please encourage your child to read ALL summer long. Enter the public library’s summer reading program. Practice math facts, tell time and make the most of what they’ve learned. Have a good summer! Thanks for a good year!

THIRD GRADE Third graders are getting better in multiplication, but practicing their flash cards nightly would help them improve even more! If you need more flash cards please let me know. We will continue with multiplication the rest of the year, but will add area and perimeter to our lessons too. Our class seed experiments went exceptionally well! Many of our seeds grew into seedlings, growing roots and leaves. The kids enjoyed coming in every morning to observe the changes. Our new science unit is on ecosystems; types of ecosystems, adaptations, and changes that affect ecosystems.

Page 6: May 2015 Newsletter - Sacred Heart Coshocton · Some of the children are writing their names in cursive quite well. We will con-tinue to learn one upper case cursive letter daily

In reading, we will be finishing up our unit on Fairy Tales and moving on to real life voyages! We will learn about a young Pilgrim on the Mayflower, a visit to a new place, and about a voyage to Antarctica where a crew gets trapped in the ice. These are some amazing stories that I hope your children will love. We are using the iPads daily for Moby Max and the kids love it! This is a program they can do at home. This is a great tool to use over the summer to keep your children learning, so they can be ready for 4th grade math in the fall. In the 3 weeks we have been doing it, I have seen improvements so I can only imagine the progress they will make if they continue to work on it in the summer! Remember to check ‘School Speak’ for grades and notes and if any questions or concerns arise please let me know!

GRADES 4-6:

SOCIAL STUDIES AND RELIGION Thank you to all those who have been saving cans for Mrs. Andrews and the fourth grade. I have spent my funds on stamps, envelopes, and labels for our Prayer Person program in grades three to six. They are greatly appreciated! In religion classes grades three to six have focused on the week of Holy week and the season of Easter. Grade six now understands that Holy week is the holiest week of the Church year. We recalled the story of the Crucifixion, learned about ‘Tre Ore’ (the last three hours of Jesus’ life), and the seven last statements that Jesus made just before he died. We recalled God’s plan of Salvation and prayed a Good Friday prayer celebration. We continued with lessons about the Easter season. We recognize that Easter celebrates the new life won for us by Jesus’ Resurrection and it is an opportunity to live a new life in Christ. We shared our experiences of being doubtful as we read the Gospel story of the Apostle Thomas also known as doubting Thomas. We learned about acts of faith as we shared stories about doing the right thing. We discussed the qualities needed to make acts of faith. Our prayer celebration reviewed our expressions of Easter joy and praise. Fifth grade understands that the Triduum of Holy Week includes the three holiest days of the Liturgical year. During that time we relive the great mystery of Jesus’ suffering, Death, and Resurrection. We explored the Church’s celebration of

Page 7: May 2015 Newsletter - Sacred Heart Coshocton · Some of the children are writing their names in cursive quite well. We will con-tinue to learn one upper case cursive letter daily

Holy Thursday with the events of the Last Supper. We learned the meaning of service to others and prayed with the antiphons for Holy Thursday. During the Easter season we recognize we are celebrating Jesus’ Resurrection and the gift of new life Jesus won for us. We learned how Jesus made Peter the Apostle the head of the Church. We learned the story of Pentecost and a healing miracle as we reflected on what it means to be a Christian. Fourth grade learned that the celebration of the Triduum during Holy Week commemorates the events of Jesus’ Passion, Death and Resurrection. We understand that the Church waits during the day on Holy Saturday for the Risen Christ. We recognize the Easter Vigil as a celebration of the fulfillment of God’s plan of Salvation culminating in the Resurrection. We also made a connection between food and celebration as we explored the idea of a heavenly banquet. Third grade understood that Jesus loved us and gave his life for us. We learned that through Jesus’ Death, God gives us life everlasting. We learned about the final days of Jesus’ life on earth. We understand the meaning of each of the days of Holy Week and appreciate the symbols and images. During the Easter Season, we understand that Easter celebrates the Good News of Jesus’ rising from the dead. This ‘Good News’ brings us happiness. We learned that Jesus appeared to his followers after he had risen from the dead. We were introduced to the story of “The Road to Emmaus.” We read about behaviors that reveal Jesus to others. We know that acts of kindness, caring, and forgiveness are ways in which we meet Jesus in other people. In the subject of Social Studies, the classes have been learning from our text books and, the ‘Studies Weekly’ series newspapers that follow the common core standards for each grades’ curriculum. Each ‘Studies Weekly’ focuses on a scope and sequence appropriate for each grade level. Sixth grade focuses on World History. Fifth grade’s focus has changed to what we now call the ‘New World’ which includes the USA, Canada, and Latin America. Fourth grade’s focus is on Ohio. Sixth grade continued to focus on the Middle Ages with the barbarians who caused the people of Europe to find protection under the feudal system. We read about life in a castle. The articles discussed the diminishing trade and the fading of the Greek and Roman democratic ideals. Next, we focused on the Catholic Church, the Crusades, and how culture contact brought about huge change in Medieval Europe. Students read about the Magna Carta. We are focusing on the brave people who went off to explore the world. We read about such explorers as Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus. Fifth grade focused The Constitution of the United States as they studied that state and federal laws must be in concordance with the Constitution. Students studied how the Constitution is amended and learned some of the provisions of the Constitution such as the system of three-branch government. Fourth graders have learned how Native Americans reacted to Ohio’s growth. We described how the war of 1812 affected Ohio. We explained how changes in immigration and transportation helped Ohio grow. We can now distinguish between fact

Page 8: May 2015 Newsletter - Sacred Heart Coshocton · Some of the children are writing their names in cursive quite well. We will con-tinue to learn one upper case cursive letter daily

and opinion in statements about historical events. We can differentiate between facts and opinions when gathering information.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Wow! It is truly hard to believe that we are looking toward the last month of the school year! Everyone is still working hard, however. Thank you, parents, for the many ways that you have helped your student. This is very evident in “Matt’s Cabin”, created by our fourth graders. Some dioramas depict the simplicity of Matt’s life without his family. Others reflect the relative opulence that he experienced after his father returned and brought his mother and sister. This is a story of survival, but more importantly, it is a story of love and trust. For some students the favorite part of this adventure was when his family finally arrived. Each of us experiences happiness when our family reunites. With the arrival of spring we celebrated Earth Day! Sacred Heart was not in session when the city of Coshocton held its clean-up day, so each class did a litter walk in the area around our school. I was very proud of the fifth graders’ hard work. Uncomplaining, they walked around the neighborhood, picking up all kinds of litter. There was even friendly competition to see which team could fill their trash bags first. It was especially gratifying when one gentleman came up to the boys and thanked them for cleaning up the neighborhood. I know they appreciated being appreciated! The sixth graders have been working on a project to improve the community, too. Each has written letters to Coshocton’s Service Director, Mr. Jerry Stenner, to persuade him to put in a crosswalk on Brown’s Lane in the area between Covington Square and Victory Baptist Church. It came to our attention that it is dangerous for the residents to cross the street to church. After studying the important parts of writing a persuasive letter, each student composed his/her own letter, which was then presented to Mr. Stenner. We are grateful that our letter-writing campaign has received positive results. And the Covington Square residents are grateful, too! Congratulations to the students for taking an idea and making a difference in the lives of others in our city! We all shall miss you so much. Thank you to each of you for being a blessing!

SCIENCE AND MATH Welcome Spring! We are sooooo glad it’s here at last!

In math we are working hard to complete as much of the text book as possible. All the calamity days took a bite out of our learning time so we are trying to push hard to make it up. Fractions are still on the table for the 4th grade. This is a very useful and necessary skill which will be built upon each consecutive year in school. We are going to master operations with fractions!

The 5th grade will be working with data, including graphs and charts. We will learn how to create them and how to interpret them. We will also do some work with ratios before the summer break begins.

The 6th grade is wrapping up the chapter on percent and we will finish out the year by learning how to graph equations. I know this sounds scary but, trust me, it’s really easy! In science 4th, 5th, and 6th grades are continuing the Life Science portion of our curriculum. The 6th grade is learning all about DNA and genetics. We will model DNA replication and do a genetic study with Easter eggs! The 5th grade is exploring ecosystems and how organisms within ecosystems work together as well as how ecosystems are changed both for better and worse. The 4th grade students are exploring how organisms have developed adaptations that allow them to survive and thrive in various ecosystems. The 5th and 6th grades will be going to AEP’s Earth Day Celebration on May 13. More information will be sent home soon. This is always a fun day full of all kinds of activities and learning experiences. Pray for sunny weather! Remember to check "SchoolSpeak" for homework and grades. I’m doing my best to keep it up to date!

SAVE, SAVE, SAVE: Thank you to all of you who save Campbell’s Soup labels and the General Mills “Box Top for Education” coupons. Your support is greatly appreciated! Some reminders: Please do not send in the entire label. The company will not accept them anymore. Campbell’s will only accept the UPC code (include the scholar holding the pencil, also). General Mills will accept only those box tops that have been cut on the dotted line. Your help with this matter will be greatly appreciated, since this is a monumental task when we receive the volume of labels and box tops that we do. Please drop them off in the school office or in the box at the back of the church. Here is an example of what we need:

The Prayer to Sacred Heart

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, fountain of eternal life,

Your Heart glows with complete love. You are my refuge and my hope.

Most adorable and loving Savior, consume my heart with the fire

of Your love. Pour down on my soul those graces that flow from Your loving heart.

Let my heart be united with Yours. Let my will be conformed to Yours

in all things. May Your will be the rule

of all my desires and actions.

Amen
