“…and never live before they die.” Something I read this

week quoted that line and it is actually from a hymn.

Curious as to which hymn, I opened my hymnal

expecting some new and unfamiliar hymn. But, I

discovered, this line comes from the hymn “The Church

of Christ in Every Age.” Perhaps you have heard it too?

The first two verses go as follows:

The church of Christ, in ev'ry age

beset by change, but Spirit-led,

must claim and test its heritage

and keep on rising from the dead.

Across the world, across the street,

the victims of injustice cry

for shelter and for bread to eat,

and never live before they die.

This may be perhaps one of the greatest struggles before

us, that there are some who “never live before they die.”

We run from here to there, doing this, doing that. The

years march on, the days fly. Some days we can hardly

take it in. Soon, hopefully soon, many of us

and contemplate some questions, “What seeds to put

where in the garden?” What fields are thawed enough

(warm enough?) to plant? What are the plans for

summer? I invite you to also contemplate the line from

this treasured hymn and ask “Who are those that never

live before they die?” Is it us in our whirlwind lives?

Our families when coordinating a get-together can seem

impossible? Someone we know who is getting through

the day, but for them it is one without joy, thankfulness,

or hope?

Let’s STOP.

Just stop.

Stop and wonder how can we truly live before we die?

Live deeply. Live for things that last long after us. Live

for things that will give us hope and life long after the
