Dear Friends

The leadership of St Andrews Church recently engaged a consultant to help us develop our vision. Consultants often have a bad press. I am reminded of the story of the farmer who is visited by a young man in a flash car, Armani suit and Rayban sunglasses who offers to calculate the size of his flock in exchange for one of his sheep. After several hours on his laptop using wireless technology and satellite systems, he proudly proclaims his answer and grabs one of the dumb animals as his reward. The farmer responds by asking for the return of the captured beast provided he can identify the profession of the young man. This is agreed. The farmer proceeds: “I know you‟re a consultant because you‟ve come here, told me what I already know and have charged me for it, despite knowing absolutely nothing about my business. Now give me back my dog and clear off!”

In contrast, St Andrews experience was a very positive one. We were able to arrive at a clear consensus about our vision as a church. That vision is not so much about where we are going, but where we are: not so much a vision of the future, but a clearer understanding of the present. We were able to agree those things that were most important to us as a church.

Hence, we agreed that the purpose of St Andrews church is:

To encounter the life changing God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, through prayer, worship and bible study (Exodus 3.1-6)

To make disciples of Jesus (Matthew 28.16-20)

To serve those in need especially in our own local community as if they were Jesus (Matthew 25.31-46)

So much could be said to amplify each of those vital statements, not least a recognition that we fail to fulfill this purpose on a daily basis. But that shouldn‟t stop us continue trying.

I will gladly field any questions about this vision. Or failing that, I know a very good consultant! Every blessing, Greg Smith.

Eco-thought

As well as serving my curacy at St Andrew‟s, I have also been appointed as Chair of the Diocesan Environment Group, a role I feel greatly privileged to be a part of. It is quite daunting, however, as the term „Environment‟ encompasses such a vast amount of critical issues such as global warming and climate change, fracking, energy consumption, conservation etc…that it can be difficult to know where to start! As part of our strategy for the next two years, the Group has launched a care of Creation Champions initiative, seeking to gather committed people in churches to raise environment issues with their respective congregations. Another part of the strategy is to unite Coventry Diocese behind an existing campaign and support it by means of fundraising or membership. This organization is called „Operation Noah‟, who seek to highlight the effects of climate change on the earth. I would encourage readers to have a look and see the good work they are doing. Their website address is: www.operationnoah.org

If you would like to join the campaign, or would like to know more about the DEG, please get in touch with Alex on 07717 778853 or email [email protected].

Healing Service

There will be a communion service for healing on Sunday May 11th at 6.30pm with anointing with oil and prayer. Please do join us if you seek healing for yourself or a loved one. Do also come along to add your prayers in this vital ministry. A second service will be held on Sept 7th.

Allesley Green Fun Day

Please join St Andrew‟s Church for Proms in the Park on Allesley Green on Monday May 5th from 1-8 p.m. There is live music, with a brass band, Parkhill School choir and Goozbumpz contemporary rock band; along with donkey rides, fairground rides and Morris dancing. Please contact Julie 07756 918847 for further details.

Gift Day

Many thanks to all those who so generously supported St Andrew‟s first ever gift day, which we hosted in order to raise funds for the exciting new post of StAPH leader. The total raised at the time of writing is £2,600 plus gift aid, which will take the total beyond £3,000. It‟s not too late to add your gift if you wish. Please see website for further details.

Walk to Church Sunday

May 18th sees our annual attempt to encourage members to walk to church (or cycle) rather than adding to carbon emissions. The weather this winter has offered uncomfortable reminders of the potential dangers of climate change. Why not be kind to the planet, and if you possibly can, give the car a rest on this one day and perhaps in the days that follow?

Baptisms

There were 31 infant and 2 adult baptisms between March 2013 and March 2014. During this time there were 3 Thanksgiving services.

A Baptism Preparation evening is held when we follow the service and check that we have the necessary information as we want the service to be a significant and enjoyable experience for the family.

We encourage families to attend Pram and the Worship 4 All Service prior to the baptism ceremony and a percentage of them now attend these services following the baptism.

Certificates are given to families at the Worship 4 All service following the baptism and a card is sent to the child on the first anniversary.

Eastern Green Golden Years

On the second meeting of March Barbara welcomed everyone and read a cleverly worded poem called „How to plant your garden.‟ The members enjoy listening to them, especially the funny ones. Keep them coming Barbara.

A final payment for our holiday to Cricket St Thomas in Chard, Somerset, is due and we are looking forward to staying in the Warners Hotel which was used in past years to film „To the Manor Born.‟ June and Gwen celebrated their birthdays and treated us to cakes and biscuits.

At our meeting 13th March Barbara welcomed everyone and then announced that it was a special birthday for Helen who was given a lovely plant and we all sang „Happy Birthday‟ to her.

Money was collected for our fish and chip lunch on 10th April then Barbara reminded members that tickets were still on

sale for our Easter Egg raffle Barbara then asked if anyone else was interested in tickets for the Gang Show at the Belgrade Theatre on 3rd May as she had to give numbers very soon. Pauline and John were thanked again for organising the tombola which had raised a substantial amount for our club.

We then had a group of singers “Frank, Linda and friends” who gave us a brilliant afternoon‟s entertainment. There were several soloists who sang songs like Wind beneath my Wings‟ and other well-known popular ballads as well as a lady who sang a funny song called „Petticoats‟ with actions which had everyone laughing. She also sang London songs whilst dressed up as a pearly Queen and we were all happy to join in some dancing to the Lambeth Walk. Barbara asked if everyone had enjoyed the singing to which the answer was a resounding „Yes.‟ It was then announced that they had been booked to sing for us at Christmas. A donation was given which we understand would be passed on to the Air Ambulance - a very worthy cause, June and Sylvia.

EASTERN GREEN VILLAGE HALL

Firstly, thank you to everyone who saved the „WISH‟ tokens in the Coventry Evening Telegraph. We had a very good response and submitted a total of 8,552 wishes and have now received a cheque to the value of £185.76.

I have been on the VH committee for 30 years and have run the VH for the past 18 years. It is now time for some new blood and I will be hanging up my keys from October, which is the start the new financial year for the VH. In the main I have enjoyed my time, I have met so many lovely people and if I could retire at 60, I would continue but this is not possible and running the hall and a full time job is proving to be just too much for me. I‟ve done my bit and now it is the turn of someone else. Is there anyone out there who would like to take on the challenge? I do hope so. I would prefer a non-partial person who would be able to continue running the hall as envisaged by the original committee – To provide a safe environment for use by ALL groups within the Eastern Green community. If you think you may be interested, perhaps you would like to come along to the next Village Hall meeting on 14 May at 8.10pm to see what is involved or you can phone me on 02476 470550. Kindest regards, Pat Sullivan

Eastern Green WI

Our April meeting was well attended by members and lots of visitors from neighbouring flower clubs. Pat Ballard gave a warm welcome to Louisa Rigden, the NAFAS demonstrator. The demonstration was entitled “Spring Delights” and during

the course of the demo, 8 beautiful flower arrangements were produced. The arrangements were raffled off and the winners were delighted to take home their prizes. Cups of tea and cakes followed and the room was filled with chatter as we viewed Louisa‟s works of art.

We are having a Beetle Drive at our May meeting which will be held on Wednesday 7th May in Eastern Green Village Hall, Church Lane (off Hockley Lane) starting at 7.15pm. There will be a raffle and a sales table for all to peruse. A jacket potato supper will follow before we head off home.

At our June meeting, which takes place on the 4th, we are looking forward to welcoming Geoff Croft from Walnut Tree Nursery. If you are a keen gardener or a beginner come along, bring your partner and get some hints and tips on potting up plants. Tickets are £5, payable at the door or from Glen on 02476 461206. This will include refreshments of tea and cakes. Come on Gents, this is an opportunity to visit the WI!

New members are always welcome so come along and join this friendly group of ladies at your local WI. Eira Smith

Eastern Green History Group

Many of Coventry‟s younger generation will be unaware of the remarkable history of Thomas Bushill and his family. At the March meeting of the History Group, Margaret Hobley, gave us an insight into some of the origins, business practices and development of the box making business, which originated in the Old Palace Yard opposite the Council House. It was only in 1941 that the business moved to Canley and subsequently closed in 1991.

Tutoring: Could you spare two hours to offer some free tutoring? As part of working together with Churches in the area, we are seeking people who would be willing to tutor children from Primary and Secondary school ages who need help with homework/revision. It is likely this would be on a Saturday morning at Tile Hill Youth centre from 10am-12pm. Please phone Alex if you are interested on 07717 778853.

Rock Solid

It‟s been another exciting year of comings and goings. Some of our older members have left for other things and we have had a new influx to replace them, oh how I miss the older ones they were so much quieter! In reality, it‟s great to get some new people and they have settled in really well.

The year has been a mix of our regular meetings in the Scout Hut, where we have played games, chatted about some of the important issues we all face and worked out where God fits into it all. We‟ve had socials including a fancy dress party; we

went bowling and Lazer Quest. We led and took part in the bi monthly youth services and helped those in other countries desperate for water by sponsoring and carrying a 25 litre barrel of water around the fields of Eastern Green to get a real sense of what it must be like to collect and carry our water each day!

There are still opportunities for young people in school year 5 upwards who want to join, to come along just give me a ring.

None of this is possible without a small band of helpers, so thank you to Martine, Liz and Josh. Nick Tooby 07951925772
