Welcome to May already,

Last month was a busy month with the return of the V8’s back to Pukekohe. The track looks like it has finally joined the new millennium, and special thanks should go to the Hamilton City Council for making most of this happen by basically giving away the infrastructure that Hamilton ratepayers funded. Some great racing, with the weather holding out.

The biggest event for the club was the MTA / Hamilton Car Club rally of Maramarua - a winning formula for competitors, spectators, and organisers, with the jump past the service park providing great entertainment. Again another huge thanks must go to Mike and his team for making this happen again.

Sandi has another tarmac event with Kairangi Loop, on the 19th of this month. This is a challenging piece of road that has claimed a few that have tried too hard in the past. Sandi has planned the event with the tightest but flowing section in the middle as the course, and again based out of the school.

The club’s new container has been positioned by the basement and now provides a secure home for the club’s autocross cars. Thanks go to Chris for making this happen. We are looking for ideas and people to help run some junior events for our younger members and maybe attract non-member juniors as well. If you have any great ideas please let someone on the committee know.

Well that’s it from me. Now it’s time to go and get the rally car ready for Kairangi Loop and then think about some more circuit racing over winter.

Happy controlled skidding!

Day LicensesIf you need a day license at an event you must remember that there is now a set of questions that you need to answer. There are 10 questions and you need to get at least 8 of them correct. The Drivers Guide booklet that came out with this year’s motorsport manual has the answers.

2013 MTA Rally of Maramarua, 20th of April- Brent Shaw

Round 1 of the 2013 Rally Xtreme Challenge Series was held in the Waikato’s Maramarua Forest on Saturday the 20th of April, in conjunction with the Hamilton Car Club. Like last year, I volunteered as a marshall for the event and I was stationed at the intersection of Aranui and West Roads where stages 2, 5 and 8 passed by throughout the day.

Rain was predicted for the event, so I made sure I had plenty of warm layers of clothing, a waterproof jacket and a beanie.

However, venturing out into the forest at the crack of dawn, I was surprised and relieved that I was able to stand around in just a t-shirt as the sun shone through patches of cloud.

After double-checking that the arrows and taped areas were correct, it wasn’t long before the crackling sounds of rally cars echoed through the forest. There was an interesting selection of cars competing in the event, including this Porsche 911...

...as well as the usual Evos and WRXs. The first lot of cars came through without incident, other than 1 driver who attempted to go the wrong way and slid sideways to a halt and stalled. That was a good close-up photo opportunity missed, as I had been standing in that spot just a minute or 2 before!

Charlie Evans’ was back in force in his potent Mazda RX-7, which could be heard coming from a mile away.

Mark Parsons’ V8 Triumph TR7 made all the right noises too!

About an hour or so later the cars passed through again for the 19.2km long stage 5, which was a repeat run of stage 2. Minor damage to a couple of cars indicated that there had been a couple of ‘offs’ since I had seen them earlier in the morning.

The weather deteriorated rather rapidly as I waited for the third and final run of the day in my area with stage 8’s ‘Wild Wild West’. As I sat in the comfort of the van eating my lunch, a torrential downpour turned the track into mud.

Thankfully the rain passed quickly and blue skies returned for the remainder of the day. With a quick changeover of the flags and tape, I was ready to watch the action along with a few spectators who had turned up to check it out too.

Page 8: May 2013 - hamiltoncarclub.org.nz€¦ · Winter Series Round 2 Taupo Motorsport Park Sunday 19th of May Kairangi Tarmac Bent Sprint Kairangi Road, Waikato Thank you to Steve Honey

The now-slippery track provided plenty of sideways action as the cars effectively made a u-turn off Aranui Road and back down West Road.

The Honda Integra of Grant Liston and Rob Scott locked up and flew past me, going straight through the tape before doing a 3-point turn to get back on track. They still managed to finish 10th overall though.

The winner of the 2013 Rally of Maramarua was Dylan Turner and Malcolm Read in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8, with Sloan Cox and Sarah Coatsworth finishing in 2nd in their Evo 10. Third place went to Geof Argyle and co-driver Joelle Eyre in another Lancer Evo 8.

All rounds of the 2013 Rally Xtreme Challenge Series will be televised on TV3, so keep an eye out for coverage of this event in the next few weeks.

The Hawke’s Bay Car Club are organising Round 2 of the Rally Xtreme Challenge Series with Rally Hawke’s Bay, which is scheduled for Sunday the 2nd of June. Visit www.chrissport.co.nz to see the complete rally results for the 2013 MTA Rally of Maramarua.

Manfield Classic 2wd Rally, 27th of April- Bill McEwan

11:00am Saturday 27th of April found us lined up for the first stage of the Manfield 2wd Rally run by the Taupo Classic Rally Club. I had Josh Martin in the co-driver’s seat and Wayne and Brad helping as service crew. These events are designed to allow people to get out their old rally cars and compete in an event run in Rally format at a track which means the vehicle doesn’t need to be registered or hold a current WOF.

Classes were made up of 3 groups in different cc ratings.1. Classic, pre 19832. Almost Classicsa. 2wd 4AGE powered carsb. Limousine Class 94 door V8, V10 or V12 powdered3. Allcomers

They had a field of 28 cars of various types including Mark Parsons in the Triumph TR7 V8, a beautifully built MK2 Escort imported from the UK and fitted with a 2.5L Millington BDG engine, a V8 Hilux ute. The limousine class was won by a Lexus powered Toyota Corolla. Our Mk1 Escort was the oldest car in the field and we were seeded 25 out of 28 starters.

The rally consisted of 5 stages giving a total of 79.69Km of special stages and 1.48Km of touring. The stages used different configurations of the track in both directions with chicanes and extra corners setup where the different

tracks joined. These modifications made things more interesting and even proved too much for one Corolla which managed to clip a tire and ended up on its roof. With this being a rally and not a circuit event the stage continued with the next 2 cars attending to the incident. Once the car was back on its wheels it continued to the end of the stage.

Luckily we had no issues with the recently freshened motor in the Escort not missing a beat and the extra power was quite noticeable. Josh did a great job as navigator and we managed to complete the correct course on all stages which couldn’t be said for all entries. The lack of an intercom meant that instructions had to be yelled and with a half deaf driver this made things interesting. I look forward to listening to the comments captured on the in-car camera.

The Manfield event was the first round in a series being run by Taupo Classic Rally Club this year. The next round will be held in a similar format at Taupo Motorsport Park on August 3rd and the last round on Sept 28th. The last round will be an open rally which will include 4wd with the distance being increased to 120Km of special stages.

At the end of the day we finished 18th overall and 4th in Classic over 1701cc and now look forward to completing the whole series. Many thanks to Wayne, Josh and Brad for making the trip down and helping me at this event.

More information on the Taupo Classic Rally Club and their events can be found at www.classicrally.org.nz.
