NATIONAL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Howdy brothers and sisters. You can tell that spring is here, the birds are singing, days are getting warmer, and the famers are in the fields planting this year’s crops. They know in order for the crops to grow they must till the ground, add fertilizer, and keep the weeds out. Growing a good crop starts with a good seed. Are we planting a good crop for the Phi Delta Kappa? We need to work hard to grow a good crop by working the ground (chapters) strong so the roots of it’s members can dig deep in and grow. We need the fertilizer (events) to help the membership grow by making the chapter house a fun place to be. No one wants to be part of any organization that doesn’t do anything. We have got to keep the weeds (negativity) out. We must have a positive attitude toward each other by using the precepts of the fraternity. And all this starts with a good seed (member), for without members there is no crop. Our fields need to be constantly worked and sowed with new members. Without new members the fields will stop growing and will shrink up and slowly die. Brothers and sisters, Memorial Day is getting to have more meaning every year. At work they have this poster called the “Magnificent Seven” and it shows seven local soldiers that lost their lives protecting our way of life. One of those seven is a man named PFC Nate Frigo. For those who don’t know I am a flight instructor and I used to be a leader of a group called the Flying Squirrels that taught teenagers how to fly airplanes. Nate was one of my students. I watched him grow up through high school, I soloed him, which was a very proud day for him and me. I remember that he was proud to join the Army. When I saw his picture on the poster it brought instant tears in my eyes. After 10 years of war most of us know someone that has died and it makes Memorial Day have more meaning when it’s personable.

I want to thank all of those that have given their lives for our freedom.

Hello Broth-er s and Sweethearts; with conven-tion coming up I decided to re-run this article. In which I posed three questions that I hope we start to address. What we are doing wrong? What are we doing right? And how do we fix it? Each chapter should ask those three questions about its chapter and also on the national level. Each chapter is different, and the answers to these questions will be different to some extent. An hon-est self evaluation of your chapter will help identify the answers. When answering the question please set some ground rules, 1. What are we doing wrong? Why is it wrong? And what are we go-ing to do to correct it? We want to take a negative and turn it into a positive. 2. What are we doing right? And how do we improve on it? 3. How do we fix it? I think the answer to fixing it has always been with us, and it kind

Hello to all my brothers from beauti-ful, warm and sunny south Flor-ida. May is upon us and PDK has a new magazine editor in brother Greg Taylor. We all wish him well and know the magazine will continue to be first class. PDK will ever be thankful for the long and tedious work that brother Greg Sumpter gave to our magazine for many years. Thanks from myself and all the brothers from Fl Mu. I was able to attend a great BBQ out-ing at Tampa Alpha Lambda last month and brother and PNP Rich-ard Dakin organized a great event. Over 200 people attended and chapter support was out-standing. It was nice to see every-body working and having a great time. The BBQ food was fur-nished by a PDK pledge and done to perfection. I met chapter offici-ers as well as pledges and old friends like Brad Peterson, PNP's Tim Musser, George Taylor and Richard Dakin. This newsletter is written before we attend our Sou-hern District at Fl Nu on April 19-20 and the Spring SEC on April 20th at Fl Nu that I will be run-ning. I know it will be a good time for all attendees. Nominations for this year for Chapter Pesident of the Year are closed and the winner will be announced at summer conven-tion. Chapters may nominate a brother for the Chapter Excellence Award and I hope to present them at convention this year. I know we have alot of dedicated brothers out there so let me know about their

of goes like this;

The Objectives of

Phi Delta Kappa

To Promote fellowship among men. To encourage and foster high ethi-cal standards for its members, and the strict application of true frater-nal spirit and loyalty among its members. In each of our chapters ask yourself and your fellow brothers are we liv-ing up to this as we swore to and each new brother swears to when he crosses the hot sands. Don’t allow “Proud to be a Phi Delt” to become a meaningless greeting; promote fellowship and brotherhood in your chapter and in your community. To truly promote fellowship among men would be to spread the word to non members and bring them into the fold, don’t just go through the motions, catch the sprit and do something! I challenge each of you to write an article on what it means to be a Phi Delt. The joy and self-fulfillment you get from helping your fellow brothers in your chap-ter, the fraternity, and your commu-nity and with the help from brother Brutout hopefully the nation in a fraternity wide national charity. I’ll let brother Brutout expand on the charity and his goals for it. I just ask that we all give him our sup-port. Those three questions used follow-ing the ground rules can and will help in our chapters and fraternity as well as in our personal lives at home and at work. BUT they can-not just be words! They must be followed up by action. Only agree to what you can really do, SAY WHAT YOU MEAN, AND MEAN WHAT YOU SAY. Using a round

dedication to our fraternity. This is the time of the year that chap-ters start getting outdoor activities lined up and their chapter houses spruced up for the summer. Con-vention in Kokomo is not that far off. I know they will be working hard to put on a great conven-tion. Hope to see many new faces this summer. Everybody in PDK have a great Spring and I'm proud to be a brother in Phi Delta Kappa National Fraternity as your Na-tional Vice President.

G r e e t i n g s Brothers and S wee t he a r t s , “What to write about? What to write about?” This question I ponder almost every month. Some months the answer just jumps out to me so obvious it hurts. Other months, I couldn’t pull the rabbit out of my hat if I had three of them up my sleeve. Until you have been put in the po-sition where you are required to produce one of these every month for the tenure of your run in office, you cannot understand the strain produced by the inability to formu-late an idea and put ink to paper. It was fairly easy the first years. I still had plenty of ideas floating

S o u t h e r n District and the Spring SEC have come and gone, but if you attended, you know Florida MU and NU did a wonder-ful job in putting everything to-gether. Another adventure in broth-erhood.

With this newsletter brings change, May articles now go to Greg Taylor our new editor, welcome!

Greg Sumpter has done an out-standing job and has been very pa-tient with us all or especially me! I know that Greg will still be active in the PDK. But now he can take a real vacation and not have to worry about the newsletter. Again I thank you on a job well done for so long and I thank your family for having the true PHI DELTA KAPPA SPRIT.

around in my head. Having al-ready written on those notions, I find I have little left to say that is fresh and not been discussed in the past. I also feel that thoughts run more freely when they come on their own and in their own time rather than being forced out to meet some required deadline. Mind you, I do not mean to sound as if I am complaining. I knew that this was part of the job when I ask for it and do not wish to shirk my responsibilities. I guess I am using my lack of ideas as an idea in hopes of an epiphany dur-ing my rant. Lol. No such luck.

Phi Delta Kappa. What does that mean to you? Members, if asked what PDK is or what PDK does, how would you answer? Do you even have an answer to either part of those questions? Unfortu-nately, there is a good number of our membership that does not really have an answer for these, the simplest questions about our organization (not all are the newer members either). The sad part to this situation can be summarized by the question.. “How can you sell PDK to prospective new members if you cannot tell them what we are or what we do?” You cannot.

“We are a bar, a place to go drink.” Would be a common an-swer in some chapters. It would be incorrect in all chapters to as-sume that all we do is sell our members alcohol. We are a social organization based in many be-liefs, not the least of which is the existence of a supreme being. We are family oriented with many multi-generation members. We have many philanthropic ties to our individual communities. We are a charitable organization on

table meeting approach allows us a formula for a very productive meet-ing. This allowed for everyone the opportunity to clear the air. Always remember perception is reality; Right, wrong or indifferent what you perceive is reality to you. Once the air was cleared, it allowed for ALL of us to formulate a plan to move forward in our chapters, where leaders of our fraternity set the example for the rest to follow. Remember the pledge we all took, “...will aid him in sickness…distress, and death”. If a chapter failing isn’t distress, then I don’t know what is. We are all brothers working for a common goal and the only way we can move forward is together as BROTHERS!

“How will my actions today reflect on our fraternity tomorrow?”

the national level with monies given to many organizations.

We are much more than a bar. Yes most chapters have and sell adult beverages, but that is just a form of revenue, not an identity. Our identity is what I am looking for. I would enjoy hearing some responses to my questions. Either in the form of an article to this magazine or direct to me as an e-mail.

Let’s see what kind of responses we get.

Is It Sunburn Time Yet?

Bruce Smith

National Outer Guard

I sure as heck hope by the time this article hits the web and the hard press that I have been sun burnt at least once. This winter has just drug on and on (I know like some of my articles).

I have not traveled as much to other chapter houses as I wished I would have. Beta Nu keeps me pretty busy at times, as does my family. I am not complaining just stating the facts. I am glad that I have enough time to spend doing Phi Delt func-tions. EVERY one of the events and functions have built memories and added content to the fun jar in-side my brain. One of these days I know that my fun jar will be the only way that I will be able to enjoy these past experiences. This will be when the days of travel and even getting out and about become diffi-cult or impossible. I better enjoy what I can while I can, at least to

The “Merry Month of May” brings Mother’s Day, Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day.

On Mother’s Day we honor our Mothers and our sweethearts.

Being a veteran, Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day is very im-portant to me.

On August 31, 1949, Louis John-son, who was the United States’ Secretary of Defense, announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. The event stemmed from the armed forces’ unification to one depart-ment – the Department of Defense. The Army, Navy and Air Force leagues adopted the newly formed day. The Marine Corps League declined to drop support for Ma-rine Corps Day but supports Armed Forces Day too. The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated on Saturday, May 20, 1950. The theme for that day was “Teamed for Defense”, which ex-pressed the unification of all mili-tary forces under one government department. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the day was designed to expand public un-derstanding of what type of job was performed and the role of the military in civilian life.

Armed Forces Day was a day for the military to show “state-of-the-art” equipment to Americans. It was also a day to honor and ac-knowledge Americans in the armed forces. Parades, open houses, receptions and air shows were held at the inaugural Armed Forces Day. Armed Forces Day is still celebrated nationwide today and is part of Armed Forces Week.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of re-membrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women’s groups in the South were decorating graves be-fore the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, “Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping” by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication “To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead.. While Waterloo N.Y. was offi-cially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyn-don Johnson in May 1966, it’s difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860’s tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing move-ment that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official procla-mation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about rec-onciliation; it is about coming to-gether to honor those who gave their all.

To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, a resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans “To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a “Moment of remembrance

some extent. No more partying like a rock star at my age (HA RIGHT!).

Almost everybody that really en-joys being a Phi Delt wants to see the fraternity grow and grow. Heck, I have a hard enough time getting to around to see and re-member everybody I have met over the years. This does not mean that I don’t want the frater-nity to grow, I really do, but broth-erhood is earned and only a select few are deserving of the honor and benefit of brotherhood. I have some people I know that would benefit from the fraternity as much as the fraternity would benefit from them becoming brothers. I am not a salesman, never have been, but I feel like one at times when I start talking about PDK. It makes me a bit uncomfortable to have to sell the benefits and joys of the fraternity. The benefits and amenities that come with becom-ing a brother are greater than can be explained in words. Do I not show the joy and talk about PDK in the right way in every conversa-tion I have? I am fairly sure I do and I know my passion is real. I am glad that I have the fraternity and my brothers in my life. I plan to keep Phi Delta Kappa a big part of my life until the day I die. PNP and Emir Ed Meadows re-cently passed through the sands of the desert for the last time. Ed was a great person and a Phi Delt to be remembered with great regard. He had an enormous amount of wis-dom and was willing to share it with anyone who would listen. Phi Delta Kappa was a huge part of his life and he was a huge part of Phi Delta Kappa. He obtained Emir status through hard work and his

1820 Compromise

PNP Jon Handy – Beta Nu

Much transpired in the 33 years following the signing of our country’s constitution. By 1820 we had another war (War of 1812) with England, our Capitol had been attacked with the Whitehouse and Capitol both being burned to the ground. Be-fore the attack, Dolly Madison had escaped with the famous painting of George Washington. Francis Scott Key had written the Star Spangled Banner while Fort McHenry in Baltimore Har-bor was under attack by the Royal British Navy that had just defeated Napoleon Bonapart. The British failure at Fort McHenry had ended the war in a stalemate, with the treaty of Ghent being signed by both sides in December of 1814. British diplomat Augustus Foster ac-knowledged, “The Americans have brought us to speak of them with respect.” These events ush-ered in the “Era of Good Feel-ings” with prosperous and friendly feelings with Britain and all of Europe. No longer bound to our colonial past a new sense of confidence inspired growth and Manifest Destiny, a widely held belief that American settlers were destined to expand through-out the continent.

Since the War of 1812 the world had never experienced such rapid growth of any country as the United States of America. Free-dom seemed contagious, and the whole world was watching to see if the population actually con-trolled the power over its leaders. Growing numbers chose to leave their father countries to experi-

unwavering dedication to OUR fraternity. He will surely be missed by all of us that knew him and loved him. In last month’s magazine, Beta Nu was com-mended by Brother Woolf on how well we do the funeral ritual. I re-member the first time I was asked to do this ritual; it was for Joe El-more from Peru. I was honored to be part of this fitting tribute to a dear departed brother. I have no idea how many times I have been a part since Joe’s, but I do know that every time I do the ritual I walk away a better man. Fighting back tears and not choking up is almost impossible. Don “Ducky” Dun-can, Fairris King, Carl Coble and Ed were the hardest rituals I have ever done. Don’t get me wrong because every time the funeral rit-ual is performed it is a moving ex-perience. It is just certain ones really pull at my heart strings. All Phi Delts are special but some rise to the top for whatever reason and leave an indelible mark on one’s life. It is very sad to know these brothers are gone but it is also joy-ous to know that these brothers touched so many lives in a positive way. Until next month remember to tell your sweetheart that you love her EVERY single day, and hug a brother. I am proud to be a Phi Delta Kappa!

ence this phenomenon for them-selves.

Our country had admitted nine new states into the Union before 1820 with Maine and Missouri waiting to be admitted. The hold-up was an argument between the Democrats (pro-slavery) and the Whigs (anti-slavery) with the debate over the regulation of slavery in the western territories. Before the 1820 Compro-mise the Democrats were worried that Maine was coming into the Un-ion as an anti-slavery State and up-setting the balance between the 11 slave states and 11 free states. This would give an edge to the anti-slavery vote in Congress. They op-posed Maine being allowed to be-come a state until a compromise was reached on the Louisiana Territory.

The final compromise prohibited slavery in the Louisiana Territory north of the parallel 36 Degrees, 30 Minutes except the area within the borders of the proposed state of Mis-souri, which would be allowed in as a slave state. With Missouri and Maine both being allowed statehood the balance would remain unaltered. Because the bill passed in 1820 was the result of Missouri being allowed in as a slave state, the bill was henceforth referred to as the Mis-souri Compromise of 1820. The Un-ion was preserved but at the cost of slavery being upheld and the states still divided on the issue of whether the slaves should be considered property akin to livestock.

Thomas Jefferson expressed his opinion on the Missouri Compro-mise in a letter to John Holms, a Scottish businessman and Liberal politician, dated April 22, 1820. Jef-ferson writes that the Missouri ques-tion, "like a fire bell in the night,

Hello from the Sweetheart

Diana Dull

Hello from the National Sweet-heart, better known as “the girl-friend”. National Sweetheart Tour 2012(13) continues! February and March was such a whirlwind of activity I totally missed writing an article for last months magazine! So now that things have slightly calmed down please allow me to catch up.

The Sweetheart’s Dance was won-derful at my home chapter, Beta Eta, in February. We were joined by Nelson’s, Sumpter’s, Smith’s, Reid’s, Taylor’s, Rodman’s, and John Lehner from other chapters. In fact, Smith’s, Reid’s and Tay-lor’s stayed at the Dull Ranch!! The men crowned our new Sweet-heart, Nancy Whitted and the woman crowned our new king, Chuck Jessup. We had a wonder-ful meal, as usual, of prime rib and fixin’s prepared by Scott Dull, Scott Seliga, and Lee Sterling and a couple of helpers, Ms. Collins and her friend, in the kitchen for cleanup. After the meal we were treated to the band “The Locals” and we all danced our feet off!! It was a great time had by all who attended!! If you have not at-tended this event it should be one that you put on your calendar to attend next year!! It is always a great time!

awakened and filled me with terror. I considered it at once as the knell of the Union." Time would prove Jefferson’s prediction correct but not before one more compromise was reached. The 1850 Compro-mise will be the subject of my next article.

Next stop was the following weekend in West Lafayette with the Gamma Theta Chapter for their Anniversary!! We started with watching the IU game and spending visiting time in the hospitality room, although the TV didn’t work so they watched the game in a couple of the rooms adjacent. We all met later in a ballroom for dinner and crowning of their new sweethearts, Tracy Gruner and Tammy Bradley. Everyone look grand in their formal attire. Their own member, Jeff Brown, DJ’d us with some great danc-ing music. We also discovered Rum Chatta!!! Ask me about that sometime or Sarah Smith, lol!! As always, with our Gamma Theta Brothers and Sweethearts, we had a great time.

The next week we headed down south to visit our most southern chapters. Scott and I loaded up the truck to go on our 10 day trek, the longest I had ever been away from home. I was really excited. We drove to West Palm first. Jim and Patty Cress-man picked us up and took us out to eat at a great fish place. We then went to Florida Mu chapter. I got my picture in front but there wasn’t anyone there, well except for the people working out on the patio. But that was okay because we were going to meet up with some of the members the next day at River Ranch. We then went to Florida Nu chapter house. Barb, Chris Linsinbigler’s wife was our bartender. Some mem-bers were playing pool. They explained that they have a trav-eling pool tournament during

the meeting hall. I was presented with three charm’s to add to my bracelet by Alpha Lambda’s Bruce Besack, current president, Florida Nu’s John McChesney and Florida Mu’s Bob Foose. They are beauti-ful additions to my bracelet!! We closed out the evening with a little Blackjack. Tim Musser was the dealer and thanks to his great deal-ing I won Scott’s money back from the night before and $15 for myself!!

The next day we said our good-byes and Scott and I headed to Clearwater for the beginning of the rest of our vacation. I can see why they want to go to River Ranch. It was a great time and very relaxing. We took time to go to Alpha Lambda chapter where we were met by Chapter President Besack and his wife so we could get some pictures. This completed my goal to make it to every chapter during my reign as National Sweetheart! My bracelet is nearly complete with just a couple of charms miss-ing to commemorate this year. The rest of the time spent in Flor-ida was in Clearwater and Ft. Myers and a stop on the way home to visit with my Nephew Jordan Byrd north of Atlanta. Details on this part of the trip are too saucy for this magazine so I will keep them private for Scott and I!!

In March, our Ladies chapter held a Pork Chop dinner and Euchre night with the help of Bill Neu-decker. It was a huge success!! We served 94 meals and had about twenty in the Euchre tourney. We also ran a 50/50 and when we pulled Jan Keener’s ticket, he do-nated his winnings back to the la-dies club. Thanks Jan!! I believe we made a little over $500 that

the week. We took some pictures there and then Jim and Patty re-turned us to our hotel for the night. The next day we were off to River Ranch! We stopped for breakfast at Cracker Barrel with Cressman’s, Watt’s, McChes-ney’s and Chris Linsinbigler. We were joined later by Chip Reeder and another member. I apologize but I can’t remember his name. Sometimes my “oldtimers” kicks in, lol!! We had a good breakfast then headed to the middle of Flor-ida!! I have not been to River Ranch so I wasn’t sure what to expect. It is in a part of Florida that kinda looks like Indiana in the late summer when the grass is dried up. We past a lot of cattle pasture and potato farms on the way to River Ranch. If you have never been to River Ranch the best I can describe it is a hotel and campground resort with a few stores, rodeo and a Saloon. I think the Saloon might be the draw for the Phi Delt members, just saying, lol!! They had a building back in the Campground area where we met Florida Mu, Florida Nu, and Alpha Lambda members for meals and fellow-ship. We had a golf cart that we traveled from place to place so we wouldn’t have to walk all the way out to get a drink!! I truly en-joyed visiting and playing dom-ino’s with the ladies on Friday night. Scott played golf so I was able to getting some R & R time at the pool that day as well. On Saturday it was more R & R until the evening when we met the oth-ers for supper before we headed out to the rodeo. Scott and I thor-oughly enjoyed the rodeo and then went to the saloon and had drinks with Smurr’s and Be-sack’s. We then all went back to

night to add to our fund to help more families this next Christmas! Thanks to all who attended and participated!! We also had an Easter Egg hunt for the kids the Saturday before Easter. We had 37 kids signed up and 59 kids show up!! With some quick action on the part of some of the ladies, we went to the store and added enough candy to take care of the additional kids and the hunt was a huge success!! Next year we will plan for twice as many than signs up, lol!!

I know this is lengthy, so please forgive me. I do want to mention that this year has been and contin-ues to be a wonderful experience and I am proud to be your National Sweetheart!!. If I was at your chapter and did not give enough notice for you to see me there, you are always welcome to visit at Beta Eta. The doors are always open and as in every Phi Delt chapter, you will not find a better group of people to hang with!! Hope to see you in April at Beta Eta’s Anniversary and if not, maybe at the next place we go to visit. Thanks to my husband Scott Dull for getting me where I want to go to see Phi Delt’s!! I love you!! See you in the future and tell everyone “Hello” from me!!

Purloined Pooches

Anonymous

Seems like the infamous “Dog Nappers” have struck again at Mississippi Alpha. Brother Greg Trombly has reported twice in the magazine that their three mascots, “Little Roscoe”, “Daddy Roscoe” and “Grand Daddy Roscoe” have gone astray. Rumor has it that while this is not the first time they have come up miss-ing, they are usually returned to their owners at National Convention. Apparently there is also a fourth dog in the pack, “Great Grand Daddy Roscoe” that is also missing. If you would please check your clubhouses for these missing pups who, according to sources, look like “Clifford the Big Red Dog”. A sizable delegation from Mississippi Alpha will be attending Na-tional Convention and are looking forward to being re-united with their long lost companions.

Beta Nu

Owen “Obtuse” Oldacker

The evening was filled with soul lifting talent, button popping Food, and excellent company!

Thats right, the Beta Nu chapter house knows how to throw a so-cial!

It all started with Bruce Smith’s and Brandon Sumpter’s out of this world Spaghetti dinner! Then the lights lowered and Brother Bruce introduced The Kokomo Mystery man himself, Obtuse, of Obtuse Magic!

After performing a few effects, Obtuse conjured up the evenings first musical act, Jake Gulla. This young up and comer held the au-dience captive with his acoustic solo act! Following a few more mysterious routines, Obtuse gave a warm welcome to Jakis Stakis and his band RedRow! It was im-possible to not tap your toe to the sounds of Jakis’s Jerry Lee Lewis

style on the keys and the thumping of the upright bass!

After blowing the audiences mind a third time, the Obtuse Magi was honored to introduce that Kokomo legend himself BlindBoy William-son and his C.N.I Dawgs! BlindBoy, the showman that he is, brought the night to an amazing end with his Delta style blues! Beta Nu felt privileged to have in the audience, PNP Devin “Pappy” Ried, PNS Deb Ried, Board of Trustees member Doug Leach and his lovely wife Jan.

It was an astounding evening! A

grand ole time was had by all!

From the Editor

Dr. Gregory Taylor

It is with great ex-citement that I begin as editor of the Phi D e l t a K a p p a Magazine. I am honored to serve and will strive to meet the responsibilities and expec-tations associated with the po-sition. As Greg Sumpter men-tioned in last month’s maga-zine, this issue marks my first attempt as Editor. I hope you find it acceptable.

Greg Sumter has shared with me much wisdom along with the technical know-how he gained during his tenure as edi-tor. I am thankful to him for his years of service to the magazine and for his help dur-ing my transition to editor. Of course, I am still in the learn-ing phase, and as such, may be prone to mistakes as I begin to perform my responsibilities. I ask you to be patient and for-giving as I acquire my footing. I have a bunch of ideas and have heard multiple sugges-tions of ways to enhance the magazine. I hope to get to those ideas in the near future, however, I am going to stick to the basics while still learning the ropes and will entertain changes as my competency develops. I hope to unveil some of these changes in the first magazine after convention this year.

I know each of you make sacrifices for the benefit of the fraternity and fully realize the challenge of bal-ancing your personal, professional, and fraternity lives. Many of you contribute to PDK in multiple ca-pacities and your efforts serve to sustain this great fraternity.

For those of you who regularly con-tribute to the magazine, I applaud your efforts and I completely un-derstand the challenge of coming up with ideas, putting them into words, and sending them in article form for publication. Your brothers are grateful for your efforts, for without them, there would be no national magazine!

For those who have never submit-ted an article, or have been on a bit of a hiatus, please consider it. Your perspective matters and it is kind of fun to see something you wrote in a publication. Traditionally, articles are due by the first of the month for publica-tion in the following month’s magazine. That is still the case, as receiving your submissions by the 1st allows me to maximize my time and efforts in producing a quality magazine and meet the deadlines to the publisher. I realize sometimes we get delayed as personal and/or professional obligations get in the way. For this reason, I will accept articles up to the end of the day on the 5th of the month. I can not ex-tend the deadline past this point without sacrificing quality. There-fore, any submissions made after the 5th of the month, will not be published in the subsequent month’s magazine. Exceptions will not be granted.

You may have noticed that I have chosen to reprint some of the items from last month’s magazine. Namely, the description and appli-cation form for the Gene Campbell Scholarship, the submission form for advertising in the magazine for National Convention, and the regis-tration form for the upcoming Na-tional Convention. It is my hope that this additional exposure will prompt your involvement in these endeavors.

If you have not yet attended a Na-tional Convention, make this the year you come and find out what it’s all about. It is loads of fun and the hospitality is unrivaled. I love my home chapter of Florida Alpha Lambda and miss it dearly since moving to Illinois, but thankfully because of our previous attendance to national conventions, my sweet-heart and I enjoy life long friend-ships with members from other chapters. These friendships have helped to sustain our involvement in the fraternity even though we do not live close to our chapter house. Convention is a fantastic time to relax and enjoy the fellowship of others and perhaps gain a fresh per-spective of what it means to be as-sociated with this great fraternity. If you can find a way to be there, you will not regret it. The experiences are unforgettable and the relation-ships you develop are deep and long lasting.

In the coming months, I hope to offer some new insights and per-spectives about the ways you can contribute to the magazine. Until then, please keep making us all proud to be Phi Delts. I look for-ward to working with you for the good of the fraternity!
