Some of you may have seen these signs appear in your department. Written inboth English and Spanish, they track how many days have passed since the last

accident, including weekends. There will be 5 total: one for Assembly, Chairs, Up-holstery, Shipping, and Woodshop. Any department that manages to reach 30days without having any accidents will get lunch catering. There is no limit on this

prize, so if your department is careful enough, you could win every month. Ofcourse, having an accident resets the counter to zero.

Our old method of recording days without injuries was on the newsletter. While

there was nothing wrong with doing that, you could only see it once a month. These new signs, in contrast, are always visible and are updated daily. We hopethey will remind everyone to be more careful. Getting work done is important, but keeping safe is even more so.

    cero.

Nuestro mtodo viejo de registrar das sin lesiones era en el boletn. Aunque no

Saety Review: ExplosionsWith explosions being all over the news, you might wonder if could be an

explosion at Modernica. The answer is no, if you are referring to the sizeand devastation of the explosion. But if you want to know if anything onthe property can explode, the answer is yes.

We store several cylinders of gas in the metal shed near the woodshop;they are dangerous and only are few people are allowed to handle them. The shed should always be locked when its not being used. Each of these

chemicals has a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), which providesguidelines for use as well as safety precautions.

That being said, lets review two terms that youll nd in the MSDSs: def-

lagration and detonation. They both refer to explosions, but you dontoften hear them used because it can get confusing. While most peoplehave probably heard the term detonation, few have ever heard theterm deagration. To understand the dierence between the two, it is

necessary to look at explosions in more detail.

When something explodes, you can see gouts of re billow out. This is

called the ame front. If you are close enough, you will feel a force push-ing you down or away. This is called the pressure front. In a detonation, the ame and pressue fronts expand faster than the speed of sound. Indeagrations, they expand at the speed of sound or slower.

The dierence in speed between detonations and deagrations can beseen in the damage they cause to structures. Detonations will uniformlydamage walls, ground, and ceiling in a circular shape. Furthermore, the

damage they cause lessens as you move further from the center. Dea -grations, on the other hand, start to move in all directions uniformly butwill be quickly pulled towards areas of lower pressure, resulting in dam-

age to building exteriors. The damage they cause increases as you moveaway from the center.

iPhones, iPads, and SleepDo you keep your smartphone or tablet next to your bed? And do you use itright before sleep--to check email, Facebook, or browse the internet--or if

you wake up during the night? If the answer is yes, you are making it harderfor you to sleep. You arent alone in this either, as consumer research ndsthat millions of us bring some sort of electronic device with us to bed.

Its obvious that exposure to light makes sleeping more dicult, but the bluelight emitted from all computer and phone screens is especially disruptive tosleep. Because blue light is especially prominent in daylight, our bodies as-

sociate it with daytime, which may be why exposure to blue light can makeus more alert and improve our response times. It also has been shown to sup-press melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep and is not producedduring the day.

Over the last decade, neuroscientists have discovered novel light-sensitive

cells in the eye that detect light. These cells are separate from those we use

for vision and contain a photopigment called melanopsin that is particularlysensitive to blue light. Scientists think this light-detecting mechanism, whichregulates our sense of night and day and time of year, evolved before the

ability to see. TVs also emit blue light just as computers and phones do, butbecause they are (usually) far from your eyes, the eect is weaker.

The best solution to this is keeping iPhones and iPads out of the bedroom. But if you are reluctant to do so, there are two other options. The rst is tobuy special goggles or glasses that block out blue light. The second takes theform of a free program called f.lux, which can be found at stereopsis.com/

ux. It takes control of your computer or phone screen and adjusts it so thatthe light emitted is less blue.
