SAFETY COMMITTEEBy Jim Snyder

We had a great meeting on April 4, 2012.We had 11 members present and many

who were there for their first meeting. Those present had a lot of great suggestions

about varied areas that needs help. We talked with SecurityCaptain Ward about our residents tailgating at our gate andmaybe a need for another speed bump to stop this. We areclose to county line property so maybe they will allow this, itwill be checked on by our Liaison.

We also discussed the idea of covering the railings goingdown the walkway as they become slippery when it is rain-ing, using the covers similar to the pool railings. Also dis-cussed the need for signs on the Men’s and Ladies roomdoors “To open doors slowly”, these doors open into the halland can cause injury if the doors are opened fast. A letter toour manager concerning this issue was sent.

A member has noticed young children operating golf cartson our roadways. Our rules state you must be 16 years oldto operate golf carts. We also ask the residents to fill outvacation cards completely before leaving on vacation.

We are still trying to figure out who owns the property onSunshine Grove Road where the shrubs are growing closeto our fence line and if it ever catches on fires and burns ourcommunity could lose some homes. This needs to be cutdown to reduce this hazard.

We were notified at our Crime Watch meeting that on April28, 2012 from 10 am -2 pm the Sheriff will be at the SuperTarget to collect any Meds that are expired or someone whohas passed their Meds can be turn them in and do not flushthese items into our Eco system.

My last item is for people who live along our fence lines tonotify our security of young people jumping our fences togain access to our property. All you have to do is notifySecurity Captain Ward of the date, time and the location ofthe incident and he will have this checked on.

NEVER LOOK AT THE SUN DIRECTLY: doing so can causepermanent blindness.

Although not visible from any part of Florida, a spectacularannular solar eclipse will occur on Sunday, May 20th.Annular means “ring-like” where not all of the sun will disap-pear behind the moon. Rather, a small circle remains givingan eerie glow in the sky for several minutes (the typical “nightduring the day” experience of a total solar eclipse will nothappen).

The path of this eclipse tracks from south China to northTexas with the best viewing on the east coast near sunset.

If you have relatives in this path or as a snowbird you will bereturning to your western home, our sun will give you a goodreason to be outdoors at sunset on the third Sunday in May.

March Meeting

We discussed the final arrangements for outdoor viewingsessions on the west edge of the golf course. Phil will con-tact security and John will contact the neighbors at theFleetway/Rialto and Fleetway/Dickens intersections.

We went over tips on what to look for when buying a used tel-escope. Mirror condition is the primary concern.

Other local clubs will be holding special events for NationalAstronomy Day (April 21). Members are encouraged to meetwith the Brooksville or Chiefland Astronomy Clubs on thisdate.

We then watched a 30-minute astronomy video.

Upcoming Astronomical Events:

• May 4-7—Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower (best viewed during pre-dawn)

• May 8—7:00PM Club Meeting at John Whitman’s home• May 17—Sunset Observing Session at Fleetway and

Rialto (west edge of the golf course)

Happy Spring, everyone! This has been a beautiful Springand has helped us get our plants in. I sure hope you havetaken notice of the medium and the plants that have been putin. BUT, WE NEED YOUR HELP. If you have 15 minutes toone half hour and have one of the plantings near you wewould appreciate your help with watering them to keep themalive and growing. Each plant needs one gallon of water. Ifyou can help please give me a call so I have your name andaddress and can mark you down as one of our helpers. Thereason I am asking this is that most of the beautification com-mittee goes north for the summer months and leaves me andmy wife to try to keep up with the watering. My number is 597-3296.

We had our monthly meeting with fourteen people in atten-dance. Some were committee and some were residents thatcame with suggestions and ideas. I especially want to thankDonna Miller for attending this meeting. Donna is a MasterGardener and she gave us suggestions as to what plants aregood in our area. Also ones that do not need a lot of watering.

We hope that people on the boulevard are going to the prop-er turn a-rounds to make their turn. We are not supposed tocross over the grass to make our turns. I realize that somevehicles occasionally have to park on their as grass cuttersand emergency vehicles. Continuously cutting across in frontof your house is tearing up the grass and at times new plant-ings have been run over or otherwise damaged. Please helpus; we are trying to make our community look nice.

If you would like a tree or a plant planted for someone that haspassed all you would have to do is to pay for whatever youwant to put in. This would also help with the beautification ofBrookridge.

Before you know it summer will be here and gone and it willbe time to start thinking of Christmas and the lighting that willhave to be done. If you would like to help with this projectplease give us a call and when we are ready to start we willnotify you. This is only putting lights on the bushes, no highwork.

The last party of the 2011-2012 seasons for the Tennis Clubwas a pizza dinner the first week in April. We each broughtdishes to pass as well as best wishes to all for a great sum-mer. We played tennis after the meal so we wouldn’t feel soguilty about all those goodies! We marveled about the greatweather we had all winter. We mourned the loss of JohnSavoie, tennis player and friend extraordinaire. We antici-pate the return to the courts of Cathy Willmore, Linda Lintzand Dave Cull to the courts. We planned the parties for nextyear!

It is time to say Thank You to all who made this year such afun one for this club. Our officers were David Lucka,President, Barbara James, Secretary, and Joe Carlton,Treasurer. Troy Shepherd was out on the courts nearlyevery morning to get them swept clean. He also helped outwith the coffee, while Leslie Christensen carted supplies forour meetings and parties. Barb James led the decoratorsfor all the clubhouse parties. Fred Burrow put up our meet-ing reminder sign each month. Ron Leaky was available toanyone who wanted help with their tennis game. This yearwe celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Tennis Club.Acting as Historian, Millie Foster reminded us of our humblebeginnings. Everyone pitches in to make this club fun andsuccessful. Many hands make light work.

We are still on the courts taking advantage of the greatweather every morning from 8 am till 10 am, except forSundays. Free lessons will be available all summer fromRon Leaky, please call 346-9487. He will teach beginnersand also help those with some experience.

BROOKRIDGE SUPPORTS OUR TROOPSBy Maxine Kolbe

It has been a pleasure to send supplies to our deployed mil-itary and we have gotten many thank you calls, letters, emailand postcards from them. If anyone in Brookridge has afriend or relative they would like us to send a package toplease let me know. My phone number is 597-3296.

Our donations have been very low since the Christmas hol-idays. One thing needed is tooth items. As of now I haveplenty of toothbrushes, but toothpaste, floss and mouthrinse are much in demand. If you have a dentist willing toshare his samples that would be great. Also, money forpostage is needed.

The last two months I have asked for computer savvy peo-ple to help me get names from “Any Soldier.Com”. I didhave one response but have not heard back from that per-son, so I have not received any help with this. Withoutnames and addresses we cannot continue to help ourtroops. I have had the same person for several years gettingall the names and she needs a break. In the past othershave helped but “Any Soldier.Com” only lets you get thenames for so long under one e-mail address and then cutsyou off. This has happened to many helpers in the past andhas happened to Ed and me. Marge Roloff has continuedto help as she does change her e-mail address. I tried to dothis but they refused several addresses from different com-puter sites and said they wanted my original address. WhenI send them my original address, then they are aware thatthey cut us off. Our e-mail address is [email protected].

Brookridge residents have been very loyal supporters to ourtroops in the past and I thank each and every one of you.Without your help we would not have been there for our menand women in uniform. God Bless you All, and God BlessAmerica. We pray all our troops will be pulled out and comehome soon.

Grandma Maxine and Grandpa Ed.....and the Community ofBrookridge,

We are so happy that you have chosen our team to adopt asyour Soldiers! We thank you so much for what you do. Thereare many Americans that don't agree with our missions butwe are just carrying out orders. It is Americans like you andEd that keep us going. There are many Soldiers here thatdon't get correspondence so when I have the chance to givethem a package it makes a world of difference! We all get akick out of watching a Soldier get something that he neededand was otherwise unable to get. The reading material andsnacks is always a winner around here. And the toothbrush-es help us clean up after.

It sounds like you have a wonderful family. It's also good tohear that many of them serve. There is no greater feelingthan to be able to help protect and defend fellow Americans. The marriage of 57 years is an awesome accomplishment. My wife and I have been together for 25 years in November

and I'm only 38. Our motto when we started dating was"Forever and a Day!” I think we're well on our way. We too are from Florida. Weused to live in the Melbourne/PalmBay before I joined theArmy 17 years ago. Not too sure if we're moving back whenI retire. Ok well I'll stop talking your ear off. Thank you again for all that you, Ed, and your communitydo for all of us here. God Bless!

THANK YOU

Dear Ed and Maxine,

Thank you so much for the package, I and the Soldiers thatI serve were thrilled! Attached are a few pictures that I tookwhile I was sharing.

It sure sounds like you have a family to be proud of. And 57years?!Congratulations!

I love Florida and visit often; I proposed to my wife at WaltDisney World and my Father lives in Lake City. He recentlyretired from a long career as a DOD Civilian and worked atseveral shipyards. He retired out of Jacksonville Naval AirStation.

A bit about me:

I am the Executive Officer for a Signal Company that pro-vides voice and data communications to a Brigade in theSouth of Afghanistan. I deal with supply, planning, move-ment, training, arms and special projects like acquisition orcontracts when I'm not filling in for the Commander (Picturedwith the pillow : ) . I'm 23; I will turn 24 here in July. Hawaiiis my first duty station and was my first choice when Iaccepted my commission, as was being a Signal Officer. Iconsider myself exceptionally lucky in all respects. I love myjob and being able to serve some of the smartest Soldiers inthe Army as we work together toward providing excellentcommunications to our unit.

My wife and I were married in Nassau Harbor almost twoyears ago; we have a warm, easy relationship, even when

Page 52: May 2012 News and Views

Brookridge • May, 2012 Page 53life throws a curveball or two. We have two little FrenchBulldogs, but no children without fur. Their names areFrançois and Lucerne, and they're our little buddies. The four of us like to hang out on the beach, go for runstogether and watch TV together. Well, we watch TV whilethey snore like lumberjacks, anyway.

I spend most of my time here in the office at Kandahar AirBase. We have Soldiers at several other locations, so I alsofly out to see them as often as possible. I don't get muchfree time, but when I do I like to call my wife via Skype, havea cigar with the guys, or watch a television series on DVD.

Again, Thank you so much for the package,

Take care
