by Barbara Henry We had a really interesting presentation in April from Viktoria Sefain on native plants, wildflowers and hostas. Viktoria owns Glenbrook Farm in Fultonville and has hundreds of plants at her nurseries. She shared with us some of the wildflowers that are blooming at this time of year and showed us how she uses hostas in combination with native plants and wildflowers for the best effect. I look forward to visiting her nursery in the not too distant future. May is just around the corner and as we all know, April showers bring May flowers which brings – pilgrims! Moving right along ….Even though we have had good weather recently, don’t be in a hurry to rush your annuals into the ground. We can still have frost up until mid or even late May and many plants do not like to go into cold soil. In fact impatiens and peppers are two great examples of plants that will sulk if planted too cold

and they may never grow to their potential during the season. Take the time now to get a pH test of your soil; take your hoe and cut off the weeds every couple of weeks as soon as the soil can be worked; don’t mulch your soils yet, wait until mid June when the soils have warmed up. A general purpose fertilizer such as 10-10-10 can be applied to all your beds just as the daffy flowers are fading. Mid to late May sees the return of the hummingbirds to make sure your feeders are clean and fill them with a mixture of one part white granulated sugar to four parts water and boil for a couple of minutes. As the new growth on your perennials emerges it is a good time to divide and transplant. Give the extras to friends. Cut the ornamental grasses to the ground. You can cut up the dried grass and use it as mulch in your vegetable bed in June. Don’t be in a hurry to discard plants you think have died. Many plants such as Joe Pye weed, Rose of Sharon and hibiscus take a little longer to wake up. Visit your local garden center to fill in any empty spaces in your garden. Contrast leaf textures and heights, use complementary colors or plant a single color themed garden. Any new plants should be well watered in and watered consistently the first year. New plants don’t need feeding the first year. In the veggie garden, have a plan of where you plan to plant. Try to rotate your crops every year. Different crops have different nutrient requirements and changing their location can disrupt the life cycles of many pests. Peas should be in by now and your cold weather crops such as broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage can be planted out after they have been properly hardened off. Sow beet seeds an inch deep. Later you can thin them to one strong plant in each position. You can treat carrots and radishes the same way. Don’t be in a rush to plant those tomato plants yet, they like warm soil. I like to wait until the end of May and a week or so later, depending on the weather, for peppers. You can lay black plastic over your beds to warm the soil. This is particularly good for melons and pumpkins because

they love warm soil and have a long growing season. You can start zucchini, melons and pumpkins about three weeks before you plant to transplant them. They prefer to be started in peat pots because they really don’t like to be transplanted and putting them in a peat pot to start means you can pop pot and all in the garden. It’s a good idea to tear off the top of the peat pot and make sure it is below the level of the soil because the peat will wick moisture from the soil and your precious seedling might not get the water you think it is getting. Come join us on Thursday, June 7 for the third of our series of community presentations. This is the orchid presentation we had originally scheduled for March but out first snow storm of the year forced us to cancel. It is at the Northville Public Library at 1:30 p.m. and we will have refreshments afterwards. Janet will be bringing plants to sell if you are interested. On Saturday, May 5 starting at 9:00 a.m. we will be having our annual plant sale so come see what we have to offer. We are located on Main Street across from Stewarts and our thanks go to Ginger Driscoll for allowing us to use her property.
The Master Gardeners of Fulton and Montgomery counties will be having their plant sale on May 12 starting at 11:00 a.m. at Udderly Delicious, just past Hamilton Avenue on Route 30A in Johnstown. Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer any of your gardening questions. Remember to visit our webpage that Betsy Emery created for us as part of the visitsacandaga.com website (for which we are forever grateful to her). Previous articles are archived and as always you can contact us at P.O. Box 675, Northville, NY 12134. Remember too, Germaine Greer’s words: A garden is the best alternative therapy.

Our April 11th meeting was devoted to fishing rods. Our presenter was Glen Flagler of Schenectady who made an exciting program of making your own fly rod or casting rod. Glen was specific about what materials were best for each rod, the type of rod material, line material, types of finishing and how to make a complete and personalized fishing rod. Glen also gave us very good information on selecting rod kits from sportsman companies. Glen was so interesting that time ran short and some questions kept coming up after Glen had finished his presentation. An excellent program thanks to Glen Flagler. We hope to ask him back again in the near future! Our May 9th program will be a demonstration/ presentation by an excellent craftsman and turner whose topic will be “New Dimensions and Ideas for Turning Bottle Stoppers”. This should be a great program. Everyone should come! Remember, our regular monthly meetings are the second Wednesday of each month and begin at 7:00 P.M. at 55 2nd Avenue Mayfield, NY. Our next meeting there will be May 9th. Remember we have door prizes and refreshments are served. John Kribs & Doug Moody Duo To Perform at the Maple in April FestivalSaturday, April 29 1p.m. at the
Rockwell Street Park, Hadley, NY.
Guitarist and singer songwriter John Kribs joined his first working band at the age of 13 and never looked back. He traveled the northeast
for years playing to appreciative audiences at colleges, coffeehouses, bars and festivals. Kribs formed The Racquette River Rounders with acclaimed guitarist Danny Gotham and bassist Michael Hadfield, he recorded 2 LPs with Adirondack Records of original and traditional music with the Rounders. John formed Johnny & The Triumphs, a roots rock/ rock-a-billy band and a new venue for John’s original songs. Their 1987 INDIE release ‘Johnny and the Triumphs’, featured 9 of John’s songs and reached to the top of the American play charts in France, going to #1 in the cities of Bordeaux and Sens. “Red Belvedere” from that album and written by John has also been featured on NPRs “Car Talk”. He joined The McKrells; a unique blend of Celtic and bluegrass music and voted Best Bluegrass Band by the Northeast Country Music Association in 2000 and 2001. Besides performing and songwriting John hosts a weekly radio show featuring local and regional songwriters and chairs the not for profit Southern Adirondack Musicians Fund. Doug Moody first performed on stage in 1969 to a packed North Tonawanda, NY church congregation at the tender age of 6. It was clear, even then, that when Doug steps on stage, it’s like plugging him in. He is a born entertainer and most comfortable in the spotlight. Since then, he has delighted audiences playing everything from classical to traditional fiddle to western swing and rock music in his teens, then bebop jazz in college

at the University of Buffalo, where he was a music and voice major in the Opera department. He joined the original Buffalo-based band “The Steam Donkeys”-A roots rockin country band with a psychedelic twist. Doug toured nationally with the “Donkey’s” for 11 years, playing to a feverish fan base, heating up dance floors from the east coast to Texas, the Midwest and Canada. Most recently, Doug shares the stage with the most talented musicians around. To name a few: the “King of the NYC Blues”- Popa Chubby, with whom he performed in Paris, France in the Fall of 2008 in “Viscious Country” - a revved up Rock-n-Roll Country band; Kevin McKrell - the ever popular Celtic/Folk singer/songwriter; John Kribs - the legendary Adirondack Folk/Rock singer/songwriter sensation; and a host of others. Doug Moody always gives his audience a memorable, genre-bending performance, replete with boundless passion, unmatched versatility and rarely seen musical diversity.

DID YOU KNOW THAT—
by Town of Edinburg Historian, Priscilla L. Edwards
Even small farms in Edinburgh produced extra in the line of milk, butter, eggs, calves, lambs, pigs and/or firewood to create a cash flow by selling to the public. Keeping up with this extra production usually required the need of hired help unless the farmer was blessed with some sturdy teenage children. Some hired men did just farm work such as preparing the fields for planting, hoeing the crops, mowing, raking and getting hay to the barn. In the fall was the mowing and thrashing of oats plus cutting and grinding of corn for storage in the silo. The farm animals needed care year-round. Other men worked strictly in the woods cutting logs, pulpwood and firewood. Most hired help seemed to be of the male gender and came in all sizes, shapes, ages and

temperaments. Some were single young men looking for a job until they determined their lot in life; others were single, older men who had been loners their entire lives-some having stories to tell of their past. This latter group could hoe potatoes but weren’t always strong enough to do the heavy work of their youth. These men often needed a place to stay. Remember--no social security back then. Other hired men were married with families including Sherm Blackwood and Tom Laird who hired out to DeForest Robinson. Blackwood also worked in a sawmill and lived with his wife and nine children in DeForest’s tenant house. Laird lived with his family next door to the Robinson farm. Young Tom Laird Jr. also worked for DeForest between the time of leaving high school and entering WWII. Other men who worked on the Robinson farm were Roland Heath from New Hampshire, Louis Gagne, Scott Downing, Ken Davidson and Harold Kenyon before they progressed into a more permanent way of making a living. Frank Weaver worked only in the woods for DeForest. One day

while driving a wedge to cut a tree Frank got a piece of steel in his eye causing him to loose the sight in that eye. The Tennant family who operated the large woodenware mill at the end of Tennantville Rd. had many hired hands. My grandfather Cecil Edwards was a farm hand at Tennants when he first met my grandmother Chitto Knowlton from Stony Creek who was a hired girl in the Tennant household. Scott Robinson had a rather unique situation with his hired man. Mert Rhodes had gotten into some trouble with the law and was required to work off his sentence on Scott’s farm-a 20th century work release program. The Edwards farm on Tennantville Rd. had its fair share of hired men. Their large herd of cows provided surplus milk that was sold to a local dairy thus demanding extra help to keep up with the chores. Bachelors Wal (Wallace) Colson, Mike Dillon and Melvin Wilcox all found lodging at the Edwards farm during the times that they worked there. Carl Deming of Northville worked and found lodging at the farm when he was fresh out of

school. He went on to become an exceptional stone mason. Wal Colson was an excellent worker, fun-loving and very well liked. He hurriedly pitched a wagon load of hay into the barn one afternoon to beat a summer storm. Very sweaty, he stood in a drafty doorway waiting for the rain to stop. He caught a chill, then pneumonia and passed away a few days later. He left behind a twin brother, Will. A second man was usually hired to help during haying season and in the fall during corn harvest time. Sam Greene walked from his home on Tange Rd. to help with the haying and Paul Frasier came down from his home at Tennantville to spend a week grinding corn and filling silo. Erwin Edwards and young Evero Knowlton were other hired men. Evero once experienced quite a shock--electrical, that is. Evero was sitting in the Edwards kitchen during a thunder storm. Lightening came in on the phone, passed to the dog, then to Evero leaving a small brown spot on his arm. Melvin Wilcox brought bed bugs when he

hired on at the Edwards farm, making the lady of the house very upset to say the least. He also brought along a rather unpleasant legend. Wilcox’s nickname was “dogman”. According to local stories he raised dogs all summer only to eat them as part of his winter food supply! Truth or fiction?? No one is now alive that could tell us the truth but the legend lived on--long past the grave. The Edwards’ older neighbor Seymour Tennant helped do odd jobs about the farm. In return the Edwards’ and other neighbors gave Seymour firewood to help him heat his home for the winter and supplement his $30. a month pension. A disgruntled neighbor complained to the government which then adjusted his pension to $28. Seymour had portions missing from the tops of both ears. This was the result of Continued Next Page

Alfred would not change his pants all spring and they were so encrusted with pitch they would have stood alone! Bill Winn was the last hired man on the Edwards farm. By now the family had stopped selling milk and was only making butter. Bill and his father had made a hasty retreat out of Pennsylvania for making moonshine but on the farm he spent his days cutting pulpwood which was sold to the International Paper mill at Corinth. Bill eventually married the Edwards’ oldest daughter, Alta. Hired Help conclusion next month.

TOPS 1005 Even though we have been meeting with a core of TOPS members during these past months, we are strong in our convictions! We look forward the the upcoming summer months when we welcome back our Florida members! Our TOPS best losers for the month were Hadley Jacobs and Sherri Chamberlain. Losing after her birthday was Missy Wells. At one of our meetings we talked about motivation..... How do you know how well you’re doing if you’re not keeping score? While “pounds lost” isn’t the only important digit to tally, it’s important to track ones progress in as many ways as possible. Start recording each move in the right direction: how much water you drink each day, how many servings of veggies you eat in a week, how many minutes of exercise you log, and more. Keeping track of more than just the numbers on the scale will help one realize progress when it happens, and this will motivate you to stay on course. Some healthy habits to start doing... Keep a food journal...

Weigh-in is from 5:15-5:45 pm and our meeting runs from 6:00-7:15. This year, we each chose a “ Personal Goal”. Why? “If you’re aiming for no where, that’s just
where you’re going.” Every week, our members chart their progress toward their goal to check if they are on track to meet their goal by December 2012. Congratulations this month to Marie for losing the most weight in April and Marie and Marjorie for winning our latest contest. Thank you Georgia for all the years, time and effort you have dedicated into leading our TOPS meetings. You have shown us how we too can not only lose weight but Keep Off Pounds Sensibly and become a member of KOPS. This is a goal we are reaching toward and hope to achieve with our TOPS group’s help. Believe to Succeed. TOPS works if you work it. Hope to see you on Wednesday.
