Dedicated to animal rescue workers “who value all of earths creatures”

May always feels full of potential, like a bloom-filled with pollen, or a newly graduated senior looking forward to what’s next. We all dream of summer and the things we hope to do. The notion of what is possible and how one may work positively to achieve it is one of the strongest tools you can employ. Our days are filled with doing, but fueling that is a small fire of “goals.” The secret burning of what we hope to achieve or do...our bucket lists. What fills your heart? What strengthens your resolve? At the end of the day, are you proud of how you spent it? I’m not talking grand plans, really just the small steps of getting through. John Lennon said, “Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.” These are beautiful days, every one full of promise. So why not scrap the car and ride your bike to work? Take the family to the humane society and choose a new pet to love, (and that will love you back.) Run in a race to beat cancer or raise money for a great cause, eat healthy, do something really nice for someone, look in on a neighbor- shake out your potential and give it a spin. Pick a small goal you’ve been hoping to accomplish, gather what you need and seize today. imagine positive, Dana Simson

DELMARVA IS PRIME CYCLING TERRITORY!Beautiful, flat landscapes in a moderate environment, an average commute of less than 18 minutes, enjoy the fresh air, lose flab, look cool and feel superior to your gas-guzzling co-workers. Seems like we should be populated with pedal-ists! Not yet. But in some areas of our fair peninsula, the lowly bicyle is taking charge. “Walkable, Bikeable Delaware” was the Winning Campaign of the Year award at the 2012 National Bike Summit. Helmets off in salute! This just goes to show what a dedicated and focused group of bicyclists can do to reverse years of car sprawl by forming coalitions with public health, business, environmental and civic communities to invest in bike friendly pathways. This effort has resulted in new legislation “link[ing] cities and towns with a network of off-alignment multi-use paths and greenways that can be used by commuters in addition to recreational pedestrians and bicyclists” as one of the state’s top transportation spending priorities. Excellent! Citizens & goverment work together! Encouraging folks to get out of the car and bike it - is good in SO many ways! From saving gas to toning your body for the beach, biking is a winning idea.

!Is it the notion of wearing the goofy helmet that is holding you back? There is now an entire industry devoted to hip (and safe) cycling fashion. Europe has been cycling for decades, out of necessity and smart logic. It is time to make our picturesque Delmarva towns more walkable and bikeable. It doesn’t have to be an expensive makeover.Simple things like- safe bike racks in hi traffic desti-nations, so folks can lock up their bikes, and paths or painted/designated lanes for bicylists. The final piece of the puzzle is us. You and I choosing to leave the car behind, getting on a bike and smiling all the way to wherever we are going.Newsbreak! “The City of Salisbury, MD. is under-taking plans to create bike paths which will connect the downtown & PRMC with the University and back.”

GARDEN WARRIOR

The war is on.Infact I have lost severalskirmishes, butnow we are bringingout the BIG guns. See this deepdo-do? (actually it is aged cow poo, imported from Lancaster, PA) Yes. I emptied my pockets for it. The notion was that this would blanket back any weeds and feed the soil. It mightdo the first and it will feed the soil and my lovely garden plants, but the weeds will be at the table too. One must experiment to conquer one’s obstacles. What tomulch with is unsolved. My family hates the look of hay. (If youcan get away with it- it works the BEST!) I used wood-chip mulcheslast year but now the Pros gasp and wag their fingers at that- not only does it mess up your soil’s chemistry, it attacts wood spor mold and worse: TERMITES! Sadly, even though I covered gardens (away from the house) in 3-4 inches of natural pine bark mulch- there are plenty of weeds, happily languishing in these beds tucked in and dreaming of their future offspring.

Gosh, I’m glad I’m a dog.

Last year I employed some highly strategic techniques in my 100 year war with cut-grass et al.Top prize for good garden path goes to “shallow ditch, old carpet underside/up, topped with play-ground wood mulch.”Top Prize for garden mulch:“Hay, just like dear Ruth Stout in-structed- the moldier the better.”Top prize for holding off the evilhordes that wish to over run your pristine garden plots: a diabolic secret weapon “Piles of weeded weeds- 4-6 inches high in a less than thinly veiled threat.”This recieves a second gold star, as you also have a place to put your new compost. An interview with Adam Cohen, Vice President and Founder of Pioneer Green Energy, LLC. He heads up east coast wind development work for Pioneer Green.“Our project is called the Great Bay Wind Farm. Somerset County offers several factors that make wind energy a great addition to the area. It all starts with the community and they have been very welcoming to us-from landowners all the way up to elected officials and community leaders. It is a tremendous opportunity for the county to bolster its revenues while also protecting farmers and the agricultural way of life everyone enjoys. Farmers have been looking to diversify their operations and add extra revenues without subdividing or selling their land. Wind farming offers this very opportunity-farmers can farm and hunt right up to the base of each turbine with no other restrictions on their land. Somerset County also has existing large transmis-sion lines running through the area with a strong coastal breeze that picks up in the afternoon, just as power is needed for the community and region. How many turbines would it contain and how much energy might they produce? “The project will include around 60 turbines but this number may change a little as we move through the permitting and approval process. Once completed, our project has the potential to power almost 45,000 homes with clean energy made right here Somerset County!”

hat about wind?WW

Would the Turbines assist in lowering taxes for residents of Somerset County?“Yes. Our project would add over 200 million dollars of taxable value directly into the county. This would offset everyone’s taxes tremendously while also adding a great revenue source for the com-munity to invest directly in themselves and much needed projects. Our project also does not require any county services, like sewer or school services, so it costs the county and taxpayer nothing.”Besides providing a clean alternative to coal, gas and our reliance on foreign oil, are there other benefits to wind power? “Because wind is free and inexhaustible, it is not subject to the ups and downs of energy pricing that happens every year (or as we see at the gas pump almost every day) In this way wind power of-fers price stability and long-term savings to the utility providing power to the customer. A landmark study by the New York State Electric Power System found that the addition of wind power to the system projects a savings of over 300 million dollars in one year alone! In an area like the Delmarva Peninsula that imports over 70% of their energy needs, local based energy production in Somerset County, MD would tremendously benefit everyone!” .............. continued on page 57

.................steal this idea.......................steal this ideaGet Wind of itMaryland and Delaware have been poised to be the first areas in the United States of America to develop offshore wind farms. While Europe has deployed offshore windmills since 1991, with 43 fully operational offshore wind farms today, not a single windmill has been installed off the coast of the U.S. This presents an opportunity for Maryland to put our businesses and our workers at the forefront of this imminent American industry. Unfortunately the off-shore wind wind legislation was not fully addressed this year and will have to wait to move forward in 2013. According to Delegate Charles Otto, “The 2012 Legislative Session has come to a close. HB 441 passed the House 88-47. However, it was never brought up for a vote in the Senate Finance Committee and so failed.”

Most of our energy decisions today are made with a short-term outlook and an emphasis on limited priorities. This kind of thinking has led to choosing heavily subsidized and health-hazardous fossil fu-els. In fact, Maryland currently gets over half its electricity from coal plants. When we look at the cost over a long-term period -- and when our priorities include price stability, new jobs, and environmental and public health benefits -- offshore wind power is a clear choice for Maryland. Maryland can join fellow East Coast states like New Jersey and Massachusetts in passing state legislation that supports offshore wind development.

The environment is barely mentioned as an issue in our 2012 presidential election. Wind farms and development of other alternative energys on the 3 states of Delmarva will contribute to lowering our taxes, bring in jobs and new business opportunities, and help to sustain our clear skys, natural beautyand healthy tourism industry. How many other wind farms has Pioneer Wind built & what impact have those farms had on the surrounding area?“All of the founders of Pioneer Green have played an integral part in over 2,700 MW of operational wind farm projects across the country that are now owned by leading energy companies. In all these projects, counties have benefited tremendously from wind power. Counties have employed the added revenues to invest in new roads and schools and the lowering of everyone’s taxes adds extra money to families in the community. Furthermore, during construc-tion, hundreds of high-paying jobs are created and millions of dollars are spentlocally in restaurants, or on lodging and varieties of local businesses. It is a direct injection of investment into the local economy. How can people learn more about Pioneer Energy, the Westover Project and wind power ?“We will be having community meetings in the coming months. We look forward to sharing the benefits of wind energy with everyone in the community. For more information about Pioneer Green Energy and our work, please visit our website at: pioneergreen.com. people that have gone to the dogs

(& cats)

There are folks that cannot abide seeing any creature in a difficult position and will go to bat to help them, especially abused or neglected animals. It may start with the rescue of a litter of kittens abandoned on a country road. But because of the large number of homeless pets, there are animal rescue organizations in nearly every town on Delmarva devoted to the rescue and adoption of dogs and cats. Many are ru n by just a few tireless people, out of their own pockets, dedicating their homes, energy and finances to save animals at risk, until securing a new loving home for them.

After helpless animals are rescued, cleaned and treated for any health issues, an animal shelter’s top priority is to spay or neuter the pets to prevent more homeless animals. Shelters also bring animals up to date on all routine vaccinations. Because they live in foster homes while they wait to be ad-opted, they are housebroken, litterbox trained, socialized, and have some basic training. Sadly while these animals are ready to become a great family pet, many view them as broken or undesirable because they are “shelter animals.” Not true.

Facts on adopting a rescue pet: * Pets are at shelters through no fault of their own and just want a family to love. Shelters know their animals and are practised at evaluating proposed pet placement in environments suited to match the animal’s temperament. The majority of shelter pets are grateful and loving animals that become treasured members of their new family.

* Shelters have to charge something to cover their costs. Adoption fees often include spaying/neutering, a microchip for dogs, vaccines and a vet visit as part of the package. That’s a lot of bang for the buck and a great value. They have a formal selection process because they want to make sure that the rescue pet is going to a forever home and won’t end up back at the shelter. It’s a process that benefits everyone involved.

Volunteer to help with fostering, adoption fairs, office work or special fundraisers. Monetary donations help provide food, supplies, and veterinary services for the foster pets in our care. Shelters can use items such as food, toys, towels/blankets, and crates. Contact your area Humane Society or Pet Rescue Organization.

While a pet enhances your life at any age, they are especially beneficial to seniors. In a study of heart disease patients after their discharge from the hospital, Dr. Erika Friedmann, Ph.D., professor of health and nutrition sciences, stated:

“The presence of a pet was the strongest social predictor of survival...not just for lonely or depressed people, but every-one - independent of marital status and access to social support from human beings.”

Pets make us happy:) The results of a survey indicates folks:* Talk to their pet 95%* Pet helps when they feel sad 82%* Pet helps when they physically feel bad 71%* Confides in their pet 57%* Touching their pet makes them feel better 65%

............Conclusion: “Pets are an integral component of the social support network for many individu-als and contribute to public health and well-being.” The least we can do is love them back.
