Our STHARC group of 4 vehicles left the Guides Hall at 7.30am sharp in cloudy but not so cold weather. We drove out to Sutton where we picked up the McLeish’s in their topless Mercedes (they were both well rugged up) and travelled Murumbateman/Yass route to Binalong for a morning tea stop and meet up with 9 vehicles from the Goulburn Historic & Classic Car Club (GHCCC) as previously arranged. Binalong was cold and windy, so a nice hot cuppa and shared home cooking was very welcome.
On the road again; a non-stop drive to Temora Aviation Museum and we

arrived by 11am in time for the first flight of the day. We parked out the front with 4 cars from the ACT Triumph Club, and headed into the Museum. The weather was much warmer here and we found seats to watch the planes.
The first flight was the WW2 Wirraway (Australian) piloted by Lars Larson. Soon afterwards we watched the P40 Kittyhawk piloted by Al Arthur, then “music to the ears” was the Spitfire ‘Warbird’ piloted by David Lowry; the Spit-fire served action in WW2. The planes flying overhead, performing acrobats including rolls and low level flying had the whole audience spell-bound. After the Spitfire landed we were able to inspect the Engineering Hanger and the display hanger. Our group decided not to wait for the Tiger Moth flight scheduled for 3pm, so we left at 2.30pm On the road again, for the two hour plus drive to Forbes our overnight stop for this run; we ended up travelling with most of the GHCCC members and arrived at the motel about 5pm. It was quite a sight for the motel staff to see more than a dozen heritage vehicles arrive at the same time. After settling into our rooms, the whole group decided to dine at the local RSL club that catered for all our needs, and a well-earned drink or two.
Sunday morning was bright and sunny; our Queanbeyan group drove the short distance for an 8am well known takeaway brekky and coffee before moving onto McFeeters Motor Museum in time for their 9am opening. This Museum is a beaut new complex containing the museum and souvenir shop, a wine tasting and sales outlet for local wines, and a café. As arranged with management we were given a group concession $8pp and this included a guided tour by Jan McFeeter who added some wonderful humour in her com-mentary. Then we were able to wander around to look at the vehicles in de-tail and take some individual and group photos including a photo of us in an early 1900s veteran car.
McFeeters Motor Museum contains over 50 vehicles dating from veteran to 1990’s that included cars, trucks, utes and a Japanese funeral car, and in addition there were 5 motorcycles (one was a 1952 Ariel that was given my stamp of approval). Bill McFeeter indicated that he is looking for more motor-cycles on loan (currently the car areas are full), however they do change stock regularly. Some overflow of the Museum’s vehicles are on loan to the nearby Parkes Heritage Museum.
Before leaving, we decided to indulge in coffee/tea and scones, jam and cream in the café. Then Bill McFeeter wanted some photos of our cars in the carpark, especially Graham Bate’s Ford Mainline ute.
On the road again, this time a long line of cars drove out of Forbes for a

Our Queanbeyan group mo-tored on to Cowra in time for lunch at the RSL bistro. The McLeish’s said au revoir as they were off to visit their son Richard and family who live outside of Cowra; the Boyds disappeared to get fuel and pumpkins and the rest went on their way. With Chris at the wheel and driving a bit faster, we caught up with Albert and Graham before Yass, but then let them continue as we made a pit stop at Murrumbateman.

A good friend and collector of fine Fords were having the usual chat, sorting the problems of the world out etc, then started a discussion on tractors, when he came up with the amazing statement that Henry Ford designed the “little grey Fergy “ TEA 20 tractor. Well my heart missed a beat, being a bit of a Fergy fanatic and I think Harry Ferguson rolled in his grave. Shock! Horror!

A Point of Discussion By John Thomas
Southern Tablelands Heritage Automotive Restorers Club Inc. Page 9
After much argument, I began to think he may be correct and was about admit defeat. At Wheels the same argument started when along came another friend, a collector of any thing that runs on petrol and has a Fergy and became involved in our ‘chat’, he wasn’t having a bar of it!!! That was good enough for me, so it’s off home and into the books (mainly Fergy books, don’t have many Ford books,’ Trust me’ I’m not biased?). A mission to now get the facts that Harry was the Father of tractor design. We didn’t go to hard on the Ford member/ friend as he had just had his big Six Zero birthday and he was on a bit of a high as he was now up there with the best of us ‘classical’ 60 year ‘plus’ young ones. Lets state a few of the main facts, there are many but you would need an encyclopaedia to cover this argument on why Harry was so far ahead of Henry.
1. There’s no argument that Harry designed the 3-point linkage. (that’s the
revolutionary way the tractor tows the implements around, Ford tractors were still using a tow bar, horse and cart stuff!) Henry tried to pirate this invention but in a patent court case it cost him $9.25 million in 1925
2. Harry sent 2 tractors to Ford in Dearborn USA to show Henry how the
tractor worked, in the time it took Ferguson to arrive in the USA Ford engineers had pulled it too parts to see how it worked.
3. The Ford tractor had a cut in half V8 Mercury flat head engine, Harry had
an advanced 23.9hp O.H.V. Continental engine, then the bullet proof Standard car engine of 24hp.
It appears Ford had spies in the Fergy factory and sending info back so Ford could keep abreast of Harry’s ideas. Well I rest my case and where are the latest Ford tractors now? These Friends of Ford are only trying to claim an icon little innocent grey tractor at the moment, next they could be claiming our Chryslers, Toyotas, Austins, Rolls, Holdens, and even my humble Bedford truck. We had better show some people power. 1939 was the big year of the Fergy, it was also the great year of The Wizard Oz, Gone With the Wind, Over the Rainbow was a hit song and so was Louis Armstrong’s When the Saints go Marching In; New cars released were the Austin 8, Hillman Minx, Humber Super Snipe, Ford Anglia EO4A, Morris 10 and Triumph 12. No new cars were produced after mid 1940 in England due to the war. Petrol cost 8 pence a gallon. Perhaps there might be some other input to this argument (ed- hoping to get
a story or 2 for the mag)
Page 10 The Wheel
Four cars showed up for our mid week run. As usual for this time of year the weather was magnificent and we decided to drive out to Lanyon homestead. Krystyna and Ian Mcleish brought their convertible Mercedes along with the roof down and Bertie (the dog) to guard the car. Lawrie Nock brought his Corniche convertible and Graham Bates came with his Ford Mainline Ute. I brought my Statesman and so with 32 cylinders between us we headed off. Actually, given the weather and fact that Lawrie and I were alone I thought a morning drive in a Rolls Royce would be great fun and so I parked my car and at Lawries suggestion took to the wheel of his (and Janes) beautiful car. The five of us has a pleasant drive out to Lanyon. Unfortunately the Tharwa bridge is closed so options past that point are unavailable to us at the moment. None the less the cafe at the homestead supplied us with good coffee, devonshire scones and home made soup. Krystyna and I thought the pumpkin soup of the day looked awfully NOT yellow and it didn’t really taste like pumkin..., all was put right when we were told that it was in fact cauli-flower soup and that the sign was wrong!. Anyway a great day had by all.

The editor needs members to come forward with stories of their vehicles. When I spoke to Malcolm he was still wooking for a cover story for the May magazine but he had little time and little space for the story. Ideal situation for a little story about a little vehicle. During 2010 a friend saw on ebay a vehicle which he thought I would just have to own. I didn’t and don’t, but I now do anyway. He acquired the vehi-cle, painted it in Corniche livery and took the money. What I am going to do with this is not clear. Unlike my other transport it is incredibly economical at zero litres per 100 km. Unfortunately it is not very roadable except on a trailer behind something else. Anyway we now have this wonderful thing and we are already having some fun with it. The design of the vehicle could lead one to believe that it is some sort of com-pact Rolls-Royce. It is possible that its heritage lies in the Silver Spirit series of vehicles and it could be mistaken for one of these from afar. The closer
one gets the smaller it is, so we decided that it is a small Silver Spirit which of course led to a model nomenclature of Silver Casper. Some nasty person knocked off the mascot which original-ly adorned the vehicle’s bon-net. A Spirit of Ecstasy might have gone down well, but most of them are far too big
so we went looking for a small Flying Lady. The vehicle is cute enough to deserve a name so we thought about one and came up with the name “TinkerBell”, and a mascot to match. “Tinker Bell” achieves her remarkable fuel economy by using a bank of 6 deep cycle 6 volt batteries. Power output of Rolls-Royce vehicles has tradi-tionally only been discretely disclosed. Accordingly, “TinkerBell’s” power out-put can only be revealed as “barely adequate”, but she has enough of it to last a day of driving mobility impaired visitors to the recent RROCA Federal Rally around the public display and concours sites. Despite recent developments by the Germans to produce an all electric Rolls-
Royce Phantom, “TinkerBell” is already a “current” model and like her name-
sake will remain so for the rest of her life.
“Tinker Bell” is now a Wheel story

Three member vehicles left the Guide Hall at 9am for the long, long drive to Duntroon. We were parked inside the gate area of the Dairy on the grass; visible to the passing parade of Canberrans visiting the Dairy during its open day. We set the cars up, had a look around, and were ready to go home by 10:15am. Seriously though, there was cow milking for the kids, for which the line was quite long. We spoke to some ladies about lace making. Craig seemed quite taken by the skills involved, and looks like selling his garage tools for some lace bobbins. We had a look around the dairy building which, in its day, was mainly used to store cream and cheese in the deep well that resides under the building floor. I bought some locally produced honey, but then learnt that most hives are located outside of Canberra. Watched some old time dancing, but made myself scarce, when they looked for volunteers to join in. There was a man, doing some wood turning using sticks and rope to turn the wood. That fascinated the kids, and a couple of dogs.
The cars attracted a lot of attention, especially when the dancers went into the crowd looking for people to join in. By 1pm, we packed up and headed home. I encourage STHARC members, especially those with kids and grand-kids, to take advantage of this type of event to experience life in the past. It was disappointing that so few turned up, although indications to me were that more were coming. DUNTROON DAIRY HERITAGE DAY Sunday 17 April
Southern Tablelands Heritage Automotive Restorers Club Inc. Page 17
Rolls-Royce Owners Club of Australia Centenary of the Spirit of Ecstasy Federal Rally –
Canberra April 2011
The 2011 Federal Rally ran in Canberra from 6 April to 11 April. The weather for most of the period was magnificent and the events went off without any major problems. When the rain set in on Sunday morning, a number of problems arose and the cold and cloudy start to Monday didn’t help much either. Overall most participants seemed to enjoy their stay in Canberra and the events which were run for their benefit. The Rally attracted over 200 Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars. I have been told that there were 219 cars on display at Patrick White Lawns on Saturday. Some of these were people who had made the run to Canberra especially for the day. A particular feature of the event was the participation of 40 Silver Ghosts. Such large numbers of these special cars are seldom found in one place at any one time an-ywhere on this planet, so it was a special privilege for those who seek out such opportunities. During the Rally we had evening functions at the Portrait Gallery, the aircraft hall at the War Memorial and a formal dinner at the Southern Cross Club Entertainment Centre. All functions were very well attended and the venues impressed our participants on each occasion. Grand Tours were run to Bungendore and Yass – via the Murrumbidgee Corridor. The first runs on Friday went off well but the rain for the second round put more than a bit of a dampener on things. The display day on Saturday produced fantastic weather in a magnificent feast of autumn colours bordered by the lake and the National Library of Australia building. On Monday morning, participants had been invited to partake in a farewell breakfast held at the Sutton Community Hall just off the Federal Highway. In excess of 100 cars had accepted for this event but the cold weather seemed to restrict the enthusiasm. Those who did make it enjoyed a good country breakfast in a quiet rural location conveniently located for the continuation of their journeys irrespective of their ultimate destinations. About 70 of the cars in the rally attended this event. The scenery at this time of the year was spectacular throughout our region and this spectacle added greatly to the impact of the events. I was personally very involved in the public display and concours event on Saturday 9 April. To achieve the desired layouts there was a need for much more marshalling input than was ever going to be available from the ACT Branch of
Page 18 The Wheel
RROCA. I sought assistance from other local car clubs. The amount of assistance received was humbling and I am very grateful for the support so many other motoring club members were prepared to offer for an event which really had very little to do with their own particular club or motoring interests. The volunteers who assisted the ACT Branch of RROCA on the day made that display possible. We had arranged for aerial coverage of the layouts and the success of the marshalling work done is very apparent in the coverage. A trailer for the proposed DVD covering the day was shown at the Black Tie Dinner on the Sunday night to a round of applause. I was not present but I understand that too much credit was given to the organizer and insufficient to the people who really made it happen, the volunteers who assisted throughout the day with the marshalling and stewarding of the cars. The record has been set straight for anyone willing to listen or read. I wish to thank most sincerely all those people who volunteered to assist on the day. From the outset it was clear that the proposed layouts would require a substantial marshalling input and that the protection of such an amazing line up of cars would require stewards, if the owners were going to take the risk. The outcome was unachievable without your assistance.

Wheels was once again well attended on a beautiful sunny autumn day. A number of members arrived early to secure our site and erect our club gazebos. There were 27 historic cars displayed on the STHARC stand. As you can see from the list the range of vehicles was diverse and interesting. As usual our cars drew drew alot of attention and interest from visitors to Wheels. Some of the outstanding cars in our display were a 1961 Sunbeam Rapier, A HG Monaro, a 1929 Chev and we even had a Dennis Light 4 Fire Engine. A contingent of 8 very impressive Strait eight Buicks came down from Sydney and were parked next to our stand. I am sure our members enjoyed the day with drinks, tea and coffee under our Gazebo with plenty of discussion about the fabulous range of historic cars on display.
Members are reminded that membership renewals are due before 30 June 2011. Membership renewal forms will be included in the June issue of the wheel however you can renew your membership at any time. Geoff Rudd set out on the Friday as the sun was rising like all good truckies. He dove his 1980 white Road Commander with the 1968 green Dodge AT4 760 on the trailer that he had just restored. Since he was travelling on his own he chose to travel straight down the highway via Benalla. The Thomas and Hatch group started at a more leisurely hour and took a scenic tour on the way. John Thomas chose the route and it was just up to Rosemary to navigate and Ros and Gary to follow.
The ladies had a great time at all the ‘pit stops’ exploring the goods and shops on display but it seemed to be all the men buying! We were all amazed at the bee house at Harden; we had never seen so many bee objects for sale in one place. We stopped for lunch at the Junee licorice and chocolate factory, unfortunately we did not have enough spare time to attend a tour, but we did come out with very heavy bags. Afternoon tea at Urana was a home-
made job as all the shops are now shutdown. John asked the local Country link driver about the roads along the back route we were going to take but he advised us to stick to the main road as many were still in flood. Even following this advise we still hit an enormous wash, which came up to the Holden bonnet and nearly over the top of the Prefect! We had to make a stop later on to check on the temperature guage on the Prefect, as it didn’t enjoy the impromptu ‘bath’. We found a gem of a pub at Nathalia facing the river (after another visitor advised as not to eat anywhere else in town.) and partook of a delicious menu. Ros helped out a couple of local debutante girls and allowed them to pose with our cars for their photographs, which made their day. It was early evening when we reached Kyabram and were grateful that we could use the double garage attached to our apartment to store the cars and clean them up.

Saturday was a hot and busy day with lots of visitors to the show grounds. The boys and Ros spent most of the day inspecting all the trucks, memora-bilia, stationary engines and other classic cars on display, Rosemary snuck off for a long walk around the town. Geoff met up with his sons and brother and Rosemary met up with her sister for the day.
The White Company started out making sewing machines 1906 and one was on display in the memorabilia hall. The company moved into steam en-gines then they started the internal combustion engine series in 1910. One of their vehicles from this era was on display in sad disrepair but the owner had big plans for it! Over the years the White Company acquired the Sterling Motor Corporation, the Freight Liner Corporation and the Autocar Company. In 1959 White Trucks were installing turbocharged Cummins diesels. Reo motors was acquired in 1957, the Diamond T motor truck was added in 1960. All these vehicles were on display in various stages of restoration or still operative.

Sunday was extremely busy and crowded as several classic car clubs joined the displays, also motorbikes and a swap meet! There was also a big bicycle ride around the area. We all departed after an early lunch. Geoff again took the straight route home while we took the other two cars on another scenic drive home.
We headed over towards Rutherglen and had afternoon snacks at the All Saints Winery. The homemade ice cream was delicious. Did Gary really buy us a bottle of wine to sample with our cheese platter? How many sample sips of red and white did the boys have? That put paid to us driving much further so we merrily stayed at Corowa for the night and visited the local RSL club for the evening (the pokies don’t pay well here but we couldn’t fault the service (bus door to door) nor the meals). Unfortunately the weather the next day was not kind to us and by the time we got to Wagga Wagga the Prefect was having wiper and a minor engine problem so we stopped at the Auto One . These lovely gents allowed us to park under cover (rain pelting down by now) and fix our problems, they even lent us some tools! We do thank them for their assistance and directing us to a gem of a café in the industrial estate where we had a very posh lunch. To be on the safe side we cut short our scenic tour and took the highway straight home. Geoff was not without his own adventures as he was having trouble with his lights, which seemed to go off and on without warning.
