Talk about how athletes stay safe.Explain that people who are very good at a sport can become famous for playing it. Ask, What sports stars do you know? What sports do they play? Next, ask, Do you think being a sports star could be a dangerous job? Why or why not? Lead children to see that professional athletes do some pretty dangerous things, but they stay safe by following certain rules. Today, children will get safety tips straight from the stars.

Teach about compound words.Write the word lifeguard on the board. Say, This word is a compound word. That means it’s made of two smaller words put together. Ask, What two words make up this compound word? (life, guard) Point out that separating the words gives a clue to the compound’s meaning: a lifeguard is a person who guards (or watches over) your life.

aPPLyINg tExt StrUCtUrESCreate your own safety tips.Invite children to tell any other safety tips they know. Spark ideas by asking questions like What do you do to stay safe at the beach? What rules do you follow at the playground? Write their ideas on the board using the text pattern from the issue. (Examples: Oliver’s tip: Always wear sunscreen; Lucy’s tip: Only go down the slide feetfirst.)

New words: sport, sports starsTell children that sports stars are people who are really good at a particular sport. Explain that it takes a lot of practice to be a sports star. Together with children brainstorm a list of different sports (e.g., basketball, baseball, swimming, skiing, biking, tennis, hockey). Divide children into pairs and invite them to act out one of the sports on the list. Can other children name their sport?

PhONEmIC awarENESS StaNd UP

Focus: short uThe swimmer in this month’s issue is Cullen Jones. Say Cull-en aloud as you clap out two syllables. What sound do children hear in the middle of the first syllable? That’s the short u sound! Have children sit in a circle, and tell them you’re going to say some more words. When they hear the short u sound, they should stand up! Try: summer, buddy, safe, muscles, tips, just, of, stretch, because.

LaNgUagE StrUCtUrE tIPS aNd VErBS

Focus: Action wordsTell children that when people give tips, they share ideas about what other people should do. Explain that tips often start with a verb (e.g., Swim near a lifeguard). Ask children to turn to pages 2 and 4 of this month’s issue. Together, read the four sports stars’ tips aloud. Ask children to circle the verb at the beginning of each tip. Then have children think of their own safety tips!

Remind children that in Spanish, the letter g can sound hard (as in jugar) or soft (as in gimnasia). Tell them that in English the letter g can sound hard too (as in get). Then write the word gymnast on chart paper. Explain that in English, the letter g sometimes sounds like the letter j —gymnast starts with the same sound as jump!

See how much children know about caterpillars.Display the cover of the issue and ask children to name the insect. Explain that the picture shows a caterpillar and ask, What are some things you know about caterpillars? Have you ever seen one in real life? What happens to caterpillars when they grow up? Invite children to share any ideas they may have. Then tell them they will take a fun quiz in this issue to test their knowledge.

Take the True or False quiz.Post the Big Issue where children can see it, and use sticky notes to cover up the word True or the word False in each answer. Then read each question, asking children to share their predictions with a show of hands. Have volunteers explain why they think the statement is true or false. Act out the stage of a butterfly’s life cycle.Draw children’s attention to the photos of the four stages of a butterfly’s life cycle on p. 3. New words: caterpillars, life cycleHave children look at the bottom of page 3 of this month’s issue. Explain that the four pictures show the life cycle of a butterfly. A life cycle is a series of changes that animals or insects go through as they grow. Give children paper plates and ask them to draw and label each stage of the butterfly’s life cycle. Explain that the cycle continues each time a butterfly lays an egg.

Focus: c, k, ck, chWrite the words caterpillar, colors, correct, and can on chart paper. Read them aloud and ask children to repeat them. What do these words have in common? They all have the hard c sound! Next, write the words spikes, look, and kind. Which letter sounds like the hard c in these words? (k) Finally, write the words peacock, chrysalis, and monarch. Which letters make the hard c sound in these words? (c, ck, ch).

Key phrase: This caterpillar is amazing because . . .Ask children to point to the caterpillar in the issue they think is the most amazing. Encourage them to think about why it is amazing. Have them take turns using the phrase above to share why their caterpillar is amazing.

Ask children to find every exclamation in the English issue. Together, practice reading each one with expression. Then do the same with the Spanish issue. What marks signal exclamations in each language? How are they similar? How are they different?
