Arts in the Park in Blue RidgeIf you’re planning a weekend getaway and are looking for something the whole family will
enjoy, head to the North Georgia Mountains and the 34th Annual Arts in the Park Festival onMay 29-30. The festival will feature 175 booths of juried fine art and handmade crafts, artists’demonstrations, Southern Appalachian Artist’s Guild Exhibit, children’s area, great food, andmore. The festival will be held under the oaks in the beautiful City Park in historic Downtown BlueRidge. Hours will be Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission will be $5 with childrenunder 12 free.
Some of the finest artists in the Southeast will be exhibiting paintings, photography, jewelry,glass, pottery, woodworking, sculpture, folk art, basketry, and metal work.
The Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association, which produces the festival, is housed in thehistoric Fannin County Courthouse adjacent to the park. Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth“Georgia’s Official Transportation History Museum” has over 90 pieces of retired railway
rolling stock: trains from the 1920’s and 1950’s including vintage steam and diesel locomotives,passenger and private cars, WWII troop kitchen, railway post office car, wooden freight cars,baggage cars, cabooses, and maintenance of wayequipment. The museum is home to MARTA’s historic bus fleet which includes busses from manyof the predecessor systems to MARTA.

Crepe Myrtle Festival in MonroeThe 17th Annual Walton County Crepe Myrtle Festival will take place on Saturday, June 12,
from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Hammond Park in Monroe. The festival will feature a car show, CrepeMyrtle Idol competition, kids’ activities corner, tractor parade, battle of the bands, arts and crafts

Georgia JugFest in KnoxvilleMiddle Georgia will celebrate its folk pottery traditions May 13-15 in Knoxville, Crawford
County, at the combined Georgia JugFest and Old Knoxville Days.For more than 100 years pottery was a big part of the area’s economy. Now it is collectible
as craft, folk art, and history. A three-day antiqueand vintage pottery exhibit will open May 13, and thecommunity kiln will be firing all that day. On May 14,a Pottery Lunch & Learn will focus on the pottery ofJugtown in Pike and Upson counties. Tickets areneeded for that event but not for the Pottery ID thatfollows. Everyone can bring in old pottery for identi-fication. On Friday night the festival’s Peaches andPigs amateur cook-off will reward local and areacooks with prizes in Brunswick Stew, PeachCobbler, and Vegetable Soup categories.

The first Georgia peaches were grownon St. Simons Island in the mid-1700’s. Themost popular varieties, variations of theElberta Peach, were introduced in the late1800’s. Today over 40 varieties of peachesare commercially grown in the Peach State.In a good season 150 million pounds ofpeaches can be produced in Georgia with an economic impact of over $50 million dollars.
Producing almost 85% of the peaches grown in Georgia are the counties along Georgia’sPeach Blossom Trail: Clayton, Henry, Spalding, Lamar, Monroe, Crawford, Peach, and HoustonCounties. The Trail, measuring just over 100 miles, stretches from Clayton County, just south ofAtlanta, to Houston County in middle Georgia. It runs parallel to I-75 along US 41 and US 341and offers an alternative to the traffic of I-75.
From May until August, the fresh Georgia Peach is available at local packing facilities, fromroadside stands, and from local food markets.
