SSUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS May 2010 / Arabian Tales 3

FROM THE POTENTATENobles and Ladies, we’re

about to end our first half ofthe year as we prepare forsummer. Many of our win-ter visitors have headedhome and many will headnorth to the mountains forthe summer. While our ac-tivity slows down, we don’tstop. We take the opportu-nity to review what we’vedone, our plans for coming

months and prepare for a strong finish to the year. The first half of the year has been extremely busyand we culminated last month with a celebrationat WSA. What a turnout by the El Zaribah Nobil-ity. They made an impressive showing at the con-vention with everyone pitching in to make asuccessful event. It was great to see this kind ofteamwork to support our Temple. We had an im-pressive event and it was thanks to you for mak-ing it happen.

During the summer we’ll attend the GrandLodge session and participate in Imperial to stayabreast of the happenings in both organizations.Local events will include our fish fries, ice creamsocial, Parades, Munds Park weekend for theMounted Patrol, Temple Guard and DirectorsStaff. August includes an annual outing toPayson for a Parade and OV and our CornFest. We can always use help at the CornFest and sug-gest you let Mark Lueck know when you’ll beable to help.

During the first half of the year, we imple-mented new leadership items into our officertraining and orientation. A follow-up sessionwith one of our Imperial Instructors, Mike Cle-venger, will be held May 15th. This is one youdon’t want to miss. We also implemented a Noblerecognition program, giving us a chance to honorsome Nobles who may not normally get recog-nized. We’ve worked very hard to control ourspending in an effort to stay within our incomethat’s reduced due to some tough economic times. Our Parade participation’s been at a very highlevel, with at least 80 Nobles at each Parade andachieving a high of 120. We also brought home acouple of nice awards. Our Units and Clubs areworking together to make our Temple achievesome good results. It makes me proud of our or-ganization to see the excitement we have, good at-

tendance at the Unit Head meetings and the RedFez room busy so many nights of the week.

This fall, we start off with our CornFest in Au-gust, which provides a great op-portunity to share in a fund-raiserfor the Temple and have a goodtime. September provides uswith an opportunity to travel toSalt Lake City for a visit to ourhospital. If you’ve not been, youshouldn’t miss this chance. Wefollow up with our Circus, whichis another opportunity to show-case our organization and thethings we do. We’ll be travelingagain with an OV and Parade inShow Low. This is followed withthe Potentate’s Trip to the North-east in October. It doesn’t slowdown any as we have our Ceremonial in Havasu, our Night of the Child event in November andmany more events. Keep your eyes on the EZwebsite (www.el-zaribah.org) for other events foryour entertainment pleasure and late year hap-penings.

This past month, we were able to travel toYuma to see the two Yuma Clubs working to-gether to showcase the Shrine by working at theYuma County Fair. They do a great job in theirlocal community. The Mounted Patrol put to-gether another Great Ride at EZ Ranch and wethank them for their hard work. At the same time, the Shrine Clubs from the Prescott area put on an-other great golf tournament. The Temple Guardand Hillbillies combined for a nice outing inScottsdale that was well attended and enjoyed byall. The Motorcycles had two successful fund-raisers including the Swap Meet at the Shrine andthe Bowling Palooza.

Lady Ronda’s been working hard on her fund-raiser with the Hospital Quilt and appreciates thedonations many of you made. She’ll use themoney to sponsor an event for our Hospital Chil-dren in December, during the Christmas season. So far this spring, we’ve seen a lot of Shriners stepup to meet many new challenges and it’s excitingto see the participation. You can’t say enoughabout the good things that happen in this organi-zation. It’s all done through Teamwork, becauseTogether We Can Make a Difference.Yours in the faith, Phil Houghton, Potentate 2010

ASSISTANT RABBAN

Everyone had a great time at Apache Wells Shrine Club’sPitchfork Fondue. If you’ve never been there, it’s quite a treatseeing steaks cooked on a pitchfork.

April was a busy month. We had a great Easter Brunch. Thekids loved the Easter Egg Hunt. Then right back into planningfor WSA, which was here before we knew it. We had a greatturnout, over 300 Nobles and their ladies. One of the highlightswas the picnic down at the lake. We had a lot of participationfor the Parade down Mill Ave. This has taken a lot of work andThank You to everyone who helped make it a big success.Everyone really enjoyed themselves.

The Mounted Patrol had their Spring Ride, which seems toget bigger and better every year. If you’ve never been to EZRanch for a Mounted Patrol weekend, you don’t know whatyou’re missing. You don’t have to ride to have a lot of fun.

May’s going to be a busy month also. We have our wonder-ful, elegant Mother’s Day Brunch along with a couple of FishFries and Big Nite. Big Nite’s where everyone has a fantasticmeal and tries to win a lot of money.

Even though we’ll be dark for the next few months, we’ll bebusy - Five Fish Fries, three Parades and the CornFest. A lot ofus will be going to Toronto for the Imperial Session. So have aGREAT SUMMER! Yours in the Faith, Hut Hutson

ORIENTAL GUIDE

So far this year’s gone by fast, and I can hardly believe we’realmost at the half way mark! I’m looking forward to slowingdown for a few of the “dark months,“ regrouping and preparingfor the second half!

As previously reported, Janet and I attended Imperial’s Ori-ental Guide’s Course, which was amazing! I sincerely wish wecould get more of the Nobility to go to this incredible course. We also attended the LOS and Nile Installations and welcomeour new High Priestess Linda DuBois and Queen Sandi Benekeand wish them both best wishes for a prosperous year. Motor-cycles were extremely busy with their Motorcycle Show andSwap Meet. We also had a great time at their Bowl-a-Palooza. Idon’t think I’ve ever had a better steak than I had at the ApacheWells Pitchfork Fondue! If you’ve not attended this event, you’remissing out! WSA was a huge success. We couldn’t havepulled off such a huge task without all of you. And by the timethis comes out, the Mounted Patrol will have just finished theirSpring Round-Up.

Looking forward into May, our Mother’s Day Brunch is the 9th,and our Stated Meeting will be on Tuesday May 11th to assist inaccommodating the Scottish Rite and their Reunion, then on toa few months off.

Please be safe this summer, we’ll be looking forward to see-ing you back at the Shrine to kick off the second half of the yearat the CornFest Aug 28-29th. If you know of anyone interestedin a booth at CornFest, please contact the Chairman, MarkLueck.

Thank you all for making WSA and the rest of the first half ofthe year a huge success! Gerry Massey, Oriental Guide

FROM THE TREASURER

Greetings from the Bucket closet. Still all good news from thebucket closet as we maintain a healthy balance in our restrictedaccounts, and keeping a black ink, positive balance in our Gen-eral Operations Accounts. Come to the Stated Meeting to hearthe actual amounts.

Sometimes in the Shrine Center Office we get asked ques-tions about how to donate money and how do they assure them-selves it will go where the person wants it to go. Simply put, itwill go wherever you want it to go without question. Simplymake out the check to whatever fund you want it to go to and, rest assured, your wishes will be done. If you have a questionabout the actual, correct name to put on the check, just call theOffice and we’ll explain or guide you.

Although we do get some donations from outsiders, the ma-jority of the funds we receive for operations and hospital ex-penses come from Shriners and their families. From everyoneinvolved in operating, maintaining, and governing your Templeand all related Shrine activities - THANK YOU for all you do.

Speaking of thank you’s, if you haven’t been to a Stated Meet-ing for the last three months, you may not be aware of some-thing the Divan’s doing to recognize Nobles who’ve gone aboveand beyond the normal duties as a Shriner. To recognize, andshow appreciation to these Nobles, the Pote has been present-ing a beautiful statue to an individual Shriner each month. Thestatue’s about a foot tall and is a paper-man holding out hishand and showing you a copy of the USA Today paper with theheadlines, “SUPER SHRINER” and then the name of the indi-vidual underneath.

It makes a nice addition to any shelf and hopefully theShriners receiving this award will appreciate it as much as we allappreciate what they do. Come to the meetings to see who thenext deserving recipient will be.

Since this will be the last issue till fall, I wish you all a happy, safe, and healthy summer break. Sincerely, the Bucket Man

Nobles, the summer months are fastapproaching and our Shrine has en-joyed many great functions. First andforemost was WSA, with many activi-ties planned and enjoyed.

Onions, from what I hear, will behere the beginning of May. Plan onpicking them up as soon as possibleafter they arrive.

The 136th Imperial Session’s inToronto July 4th-8th and our Potentate will be going over thecall with all of us, so you can tell your Representatives yourfeelings on any and all items coming up for a vote.

Shortly after Imperial comes our CornFest in August, thenour Shrine Circus in September. This is a major fund-raiserfor the Shrine’s General Fund. Please plan on being thereand being active. PP Jack Garrett needs all the help he canget to make this Circus a success.

October brings the Pote’s Trip to New England andCanada. We’ll again be giving flu shots in October, so makeyour appointments now.

All this activity, plus the various Unit and Club eventsplanned, will mean a fun-filled summer and fall. Please getbehind these projects that generate funds for our Templeand camaraderie for our Nobles! We’re also in need of freshnew ideas for fund-raising projects and events. Just let anyDivan member know your ideas!

As I’ve said before, Membership is our big opportunity. Allof us must get behind our Membership Chairman and givehim the help he needs. Again, it’s our duty to get every newShriner active or we lose him in short order. Fourteen newNobles came in during WSA, so visit with them and invitethem to your Club or Unit, but whatever you do, please helpthem become active. We need to help our rental agent obtain rentals for ourShrine as well. Some of us might know an outside organi-zation or individual who needs a facility to hold a function. We also need individuals to call on Shriners who are nolonger as active as they were and tell them thanks for theirpast efforts and that we’re still thinking of them. And let’spray that every day, the Black Camel stays away from ourdoor.Yours in the Faith, Paul Reynolds, Recorder

Noble of the Month Dale KregerWe step outside our local area to

honor a Noble who was nominated forservice to the organization. Dale joinedthe Shrine just over 10 years ago andjoined the Lodge just prior to that. He’sserved as Rainbow Dad in his area,Master of Yuma Lodge in ‘05 and had avery active year raising 18 Master Ma-sons, helping his Lodge receive the Builders Award. Dalecontinues to be active helping with fundraising and aware-ness events, filling the job as a mentor and coach for newMasons and coordinating events between the Lodge andShrine Club. During our Feb. visit to Yuma, Dale worked tosecure a food booth shared by the Shrine Club and Lodge, for the Silver Spur Rodeo.

Dale took over Club Pres. early last year after the untimelypassing of John Greener. Dale continues to be active in allevents and is working to promote activities between theYuma and Yuma Foothills SCs. At the Yuma County Fair, allwere working side by side in the fair food booth. While Dalewas organizing and working the booth, he was also prepar-ing much of the meat sold. He started his smoker days be-fore the fair opened and smoked numerous slabs of ribs andmany pounds of pulled pork. This helped to greatly reduceoverhead from previous years, thereby increasing profits.

Dale’s been helping Candidates join El Zaribah. There’vebeen at least 4 Yuma Candidates in the 1 1/2 years. As ClubPres., he’s been trekking to Phoenix for Unit/Club head meet-ings, Stated Meetings and participating in Temple Parades,as well as those at the local level. Dale and Lady Shelley at-tend many of Yuma Foothills social events, thus promotingthe relationship between the 2 Clubs. They’re now workingtogether on a frequent basis. Together, they give us a verynoticeable Shrine presence in the Yuma area.

Dale’s promoting the idea, “Together We Can Make a Dif-ference.” Dale walks the walk as we’re taught in Lodge. Hetruly is what Masonry and Shriners are all about.

Dear Readers:Many of you have asked over a pe-

riod of several months, “What type ofadvertising may we publish in the Arabian Tales”?It might be easier to say what type of advertising isNOT eligible for our beloved magazine. Here goes:1. Any ad promoting credit, debit or charge cards isdefinitely a NO NO. 2. An ad that promotes or offers any insurance policy, unless it’s promoted to all members, donors, support-ers or beneficiaries of the Shrine and cannot be gener-ally, otherwise, commercially available.3. Ads or announcements that promote the availabilityof any travel arrangement, unless the arrangement ispromoted to all members, donors and supporters of theShrine. The reason for the travel MUST contributesubstantially to the Shrine’s purpose.

Hopefully, this answers your questions regardingadvertising policies. If you have further questions, please let us know.Fred Wulff, Editor

UNIFORMED UNITS

Woohoo! Theycame, they had funand from all ac-

counts WSA 2010 & WSCA 2010 were a suc-cess. The Clowns of El Zaribah want to thank

all of the Nobles, their Ladies and their friends for supporting ElZaribah Shrine Temple’s Clown Unit. We’re indeed honored tohave a Temple that thinks so highly of this Unit and we’ll con-tinue to strive at maintaining a strong Unit, which deserves yoursupport.

The sun’s now high in the skies over our desert and thuslythe Temple will go dark during the hottest months of the year. However the Clowns will continue at a fast pace and be enter-taining children around the state. We’ll be going to as manyParades as we can attend, as well as several Walks for othercharities and even some of us will be going to Clown school tohone our skills as Clowns.

We encourage all Shriners who don’t participate in a Unit orClub to think about becoming active. I as the 2010 Pres. of theClowns hear complaints from different Masons that they aren’tgreeted with a friendly smile or they feel as though they aren’twelcome. This isn’t what we as Mason/Shriners want to hearfrom the Masons who aren’t Shriners, so let’s remember thatall Masons can be Shriners and if you see someone who lookslike they might be lost, looking for someone or they just looklike out of place, take a moment to say hi and can I help youfind someone or direct you to where you need to go. The Tem-ple’s our home and not everyone who walks through the doorsknows where they need to be. We need the membership togrow and it will grow quicker if we remember we have a goodbasis to draw from. Masons have already gone over the firsthurdle and that means they can be a Shriner today.

Have a great summer and if you’re traveling, remember whoyou put your faith and trust in. No great journey should startwithout first hesitating to pray for safety and guidance. Travelsafe, Brothers and until we meet again, may the Blessings fromGod be with you. BB Clown, aka Doug Fry

On May 31st, we re-member our fallen sol-diers on both sides of

the great civil war, which cost our nation thelives of 678,753 heroes of the Union and Con-

federacy. We know many of those on both sides were BrotherFreemasons, yet they fought to the death for their side. Yearslater, Masonic Brethren would again face off in the two wars inEurope, each fighting to the death for their side of the conflict. We know of many incidents of Masons on each side showing

courtesies and sometimes intermingling with their counterpartson the other side. It was a complicated situation in which thesesoldiers found themselves, but over the course of time, our fra-ternity has dealt with this issue and remained true to its princi-ples. The lesson is that any petty disagreements we might havewith one another today pale in comparison to those some facedin the past, and as we think about those patriots on MemorialDay, we should also give thought to the role that their Masonicbeliefs played in their lives and deaths.

Last month, the Culinary Unit took part in the WSA Paradeand also served chow at the WSA barbeque. We’re now lookingforward to the CornFest in August and a possible second CIFbarbeque in October. There are also some plans in the works forcooking at the Veterans Home again, and some kind of a socialget-together for the Unit this summer. Stay tuned for more in-formation. We’re planning to hold a raffle this fall, with the draw-ing to take place at the spring CIF barbeque.

Only one meeting remains before we go dark for the sum-mer, so it’s important to have as many Nobles as possible pres-ent for planning and decision making at our Unit meetings.Remember the Culinary Unit meets the 3rd Thursday of eachmonth at 7:00.

Candidates are still needed for the Fall Ceremonial, so keepin mind that when we create new Shriners, we’re also gainingpotential new Nobles for the Unit.We hope to see you on the chow line soon. Ralph Jones, Scribe

We continue tohave a greatturnout for our din-

ner meetings. Once again, these are held the 4thWednesday in the Fiesta Room. It’s been such fun to

see long time members show up and be welcomed so warmlyby everyone. Chuck Peters has become a regular at the dinnerand we saw at the March meeting Colt Hogstrom. I’d be remissnot to report on people like Ron and Aileen Randleman, Deanand Orabelle Buckley, as they’re the first to call in and are al-ways there. Julia Ayers is another one who shows up to havefun with us. What fun it is to talk of the past fun times and planfor new activities, which will become the stories for the future. It’s nice that the fun and fellowship the Shrine’s all about is aliveand well within the Director’s Staff! So, come on out and joinus. You don’t have to become a member to have fun, but youdo have to show up. We’ll take care of it from there.

If you’re a new or old Shrine member, we’re looking for you.Visit us and you’ll see how we welcome you with open arms.So think about joining us on May 26th for our May dinner meet-ing, social hour 5:30 with dinner about 6:45 and the Unit meet-ing following. INFORMATIONAL ITEM: Individuals sometimes ask why theAmerican Flag isn’t carried higher than the other National Flagsduring the National Colors Presentation at Stated Meetings, Cir-cuses and Parades. International Protocol requires all NationalFlags to be displayed at the same level. Flag Presentation Pro-tocol requires the flag salute to be maintained while NationalFlags are displayed during the National Anthems and as they’reposted. Failure to hold the salute during the entire Flag Pres-entation is a lack of courtesy for our Flag as well as the otherNational Flags. Let’s encourage our members to be courteousof our flag during Flag presentations.

I want to take this opportunity to say we all should be veryproud of ourselves and what we accomplish. As many of ourBrothers leave (or have already left) for the cooler climates“Back Home,” I say have a GREAT SUMMER, RIDE SAFE, andGODSPEED until we meet again in the Fall. Tom Sheldon, VP

events for April both took place at the beauti-ful EZ Ranch. On the 10th, a bunch of fellersgathered up to confer an outdoor 3rd degree. The degree team was primarily composed of

masons from AZ Lodge #2, and they did a fantastic job of per-forming the entire degree. Thank you, Brothers.

To add color and enhance the sincere mood of the degree, our Mounted Patrol furnished 10 horses and riders to tile thearea. It made for a memorable scene to see 10 riders inMounted Patrol uniforms, sidearms included, securing theperimeter. Very impressive to say the least.

After the degree was completed and we had a very tasty mealhighlighted with a very tasty beef brisket, the Mounted Patrolmembers rode up the hill and scattered the ashes of Joe Cross.Joe would have loved this beautiful sendoff, as his ashes werecast so as to join the final resting place of his brother’s ashes.Joe and brother Dick will live in our memories forever.

On the last weekend of the month we were again at the ranchfor our annual Spring Ride, Roundup and party. What a perfectplace for having such a party. The location, scenery and a gra-cious host make it a beautiful experience each time we have theparty/ride at the ranch. Thank you very, very, much Scott Smithand family for all you do for the Unit and our friends.

As we look toward summer, we know we’ll have a Parade forthe July 4th celebrations, but not sure of details at this time.

What we do know is we’ll be having a rip-roaring weekend ofparty-ville up in Munds Park, Aug. 30th to Sept 2nd. We’ll bejoining the Director’s Staff, Patrol and Greeters in a joint partyat the Sauerbrey household, but the real ripper will be the cel-ebration leading up to, and the final vow taking, of two fantas-tic folks. Our super Events Coordinator Lady has accepted theoffer to join hands in matrimony with our own Past CaptainDave Smith. Not knowing for sure which details I’m allowed todiscuss, I’ll simply say… This is a shindig you may want tocheck out. Consider this your official invitation to come andjoin us for any or all of the weekend’s events. Come on up.

It was a pleasure sharing theday with all of you and the kids. The picnic site was two ra-madas that sit on the lake with lots of room. The Hillbillies (Fredand Lil Rogers) and High Priest and Prophet (Past Capt. EdStolze) both supplied a golf cart for our guests. The TempleGuard sincerely thanks everyone for joining us and making thepicnic special. The day was very successful and unique be-cause of those attending - not us. The Drum & Bugle Corps will probably take a month or twooff from practice during the summer, but we’ll be back againpracticing in August for the CornFest. We have 12-15 membersactive in our practices and performances. During the summermonths we lose a few who spend their time in cooler places. Ifyou’ve been thinking about coming by and trying out an in-strument with us, there’s no better time. You DO NOT have tobe an expert musician to join us. Over half our membershiphad never picked up an instrument before they came down andjoined us. Sure, it helps if you played an instrument way backin High School. Mohave Valley Shrine Club’s Silent Messenger statue

Greetings fromthe banks of the Col-orado River, Nobles

and Ladies. We sincerely hope you had a Happyand Joyous Easter as did yours truly. Now we’re

ready to start into the late spring and warmer summer days andhope this summer won’t be too hot and keep us indoors, asthere are a lot of picnics and Parades coming up. If there’s onething Mohave Valley Shrine Club likes to do, it’s eat. We haveBrother Bob Gobel, who really gets the good food out and theattendance at our dinners has risen nearly exponentially sincehe took charge of the cooking. Keep it up, Bob.

Last year, El Zaribah Temple presented MVSC a statue of“The Silent Messenger.” This statue proclaims what the Shrinemission is. This needed to be brought to the attention of thecommunity. This statue was installed on the roof of our build-ing and its golden finish gleams brightly in the setting sun. Apicture of the statue is enclosed with this letter.

Yours truly has been a bit under the weather and I apologizefor not being able to attend all the functions I wanted to reporton. Hope next month the activities will be many and we’ll havean overabundance of attendees. See ya then. Jack

will be nice to have them back. We were pleased to have ourDen Chief, Asst. Rabban Hut Hutson and Lady Sandi at ourMarch luncheon meeting, although there were only 4 of usmembers there to greet them. We had a wonderful time, any-way.

The Club will again participate in the Show Low 4th of JulyParade, which this year will be held Saturday, July 3rd. It wouldbe nice to have some more Unit and Club participation this year.Everyone who participated last year from the Valley had a won-derful time. The Club will again have a picnic in the park fol-lowing the Parade.

The BIG event for us this year is the OV of Potentate Phil andLady Ronda on Saturday, Sept. 25th. The OV will be a luncheonfollowing the Pinetop/Lakeside Fall Festival Parade, which isthe official Shrine Parade this year. Jack Garrett’s negotiated agreat room rate at the Super 8 Motel in Show Low for Friday andSaturday, Sept. 24th and 25th. We hope to see great participa-tion, as we’ll have a lot of fun that weekend.

Congratulations to Club members Past Pote Dick Russelland WMSC Pres. Emeritus Max Long on receiving their 50-yearpins and certificates as Shriners. This is a wonderful accom-plishment.

We hope everyone has a safe and wonderful summer. We’llbe enjoying the cool weather here in the White Mountains!

White MountainGreetings Nobles, Ladies,

all: Things are winding downhere in Yuma, with many of

the winter visitors gone or leaving. Our Fair Booth was another success, al-

though attendance was down due to weather and Easter week.I want to give a special thanks to the Foothills Club for all theirhelp, especially Nobles Jack Cox and Don Young, who attendedevery day. Couldn’t have done the nights without you. Also, aspecial thanks to Ill. Sir Phil and Lady Ronda and HPP Ed Stolzeand Lady Cheryl for their help. As I’ve said before, the Nobilitygets a huge confidence boost when Phoenix recognizes theirefforts.

We still have a few Parades yet and hope to do at least onea month like we did last year. Yours in the faith, Don Plank

Zane Grey ShrineClub had their meet-ing and dinner

March 17th at Tiny’s. There were 30 Noblesand Ladies in attendance. We celebrated StPatrick’s Day with a meal of Corned Beef

Dick Ceyler of the Zane Grey Club was named Shriner of themonth for his untiring work for the Club as Sec/Treas. Dick’sbeen of tremendous value to the success of the Zane Grey Clubover the years. Spencer Roth has the onion sale project wellunder way.

We continue to have the largest attendance by our membersof any Club outside the Phoenix area at the Stated Meetings atthe Temple every month. We had 10 members drive to the Tem-ple this month.

An Open Letter to the Nobles

and Ladies of El Zaribah Shrine

It was in 2006 that we stepped up to the challengeof producing another Western Shrine AssociationConference. During the four years plus of prepara-tion, we saw an idea come to fulfillment. The city ofTempe embraced our ideas and stepped in to help usput the event together. They offered the resources ofmany of their city departments to help us in the plan-ning of the event. The Tempe Mission Palms providedus with a nice retreat and facility for our event. Theyworked many hours in the planning, preparation andexecution of the many events.

Our Nobles, Ladies and others all pitched in toshowcase our Shrine and our ability to organize andexecute a wonderful conference. The Imperial Offi-cers and Ladies came, Nobles and Ladies from otherTemples came, our Nobles and Ladies came and all at-tended meetings and many recreational activities de-signed to promote our support of the Shriners ofNorth America.

I know this required a significant sacrifice on thepart of many of you to make this event happen. It’sdifficult to put into words the amount of effort you ex-tended for your Shrine on this weekend. It’s evenmore difficult to express the gratitude my Lady and I,acting as your Potentate for this year, feel for theamount of work you did. But, we’ll try:

Pote’s WSA Thanks

THANKS TO ALL THE NOBLES AND LADIES OFEL ZARIBAH SHRINE FOR YOUR WORK AND PAR-TICIPATION AT THE WESTERN SHRINE ASSOCI-ATION CONFERENCE FOR 2010.

Turning Forty

In Evansville, Indiana on a warm,

June afternoon in 1970, a photographer

for the Evansville Sunday Courier &

Press named Randy Dieter had one shot

left on a roll of film he was using to

record pictures of a picnic being put on

by the Hadi Shrine for Shriners children.

He saw a Shriner named Al Hortman

pick up a five year old girl named Bobby

Jo Wright and carry her and her

crutches to her family. Randy snapped

a picture of the event and the rest is now history.

Coming to represent all Shriners and all the children

helped by Shriners Hospitals, this picture has been rein-

terpreted into countless statues, paintings and emblems

used by Shriners throughout the world. Sometimes called

the “Editorial without words” or “the Silent Messenger,”

however it’s called, the picture is nearing its 40th an-

niversary. If you have any representation of this picture,

take a minute to look at it and imagine all the Shriners

and all the work they’ve done for over 800,000 children.

Now see yourself in that representation and for just a mo-

ment, bask in the great feeling you get.

Greetings fromSphinx Court #65,Ladies Oriental

Shrine! Our LOS Ladies had a wonderful time in Houston, TXat our annual Grand Council meeting. We always learn a LOTand enjoy reconnecting with our friends across the Organiza-tion. We’re already looking forward to our Western Area Or-ganized Unit Meet in September in Riverside, CA. That’s ourreally FUN one!

We’d like to congratulate El Zaribah on a very successfulWSA Meet. Many of our Ladies were able to participate and itwas a BLAST — we really loved participating in the Parade!Sphinx Court is always happy to work and play with El Zaribah.Let’s keep growing both organizations by working together!

Sphinx Court will be going “dark” June, July, and August. We’ll reconvene at our Court meeting Sept. 27th and then we’llbe hosting a Membership Tea Oct. 10th. We hope you Ladieswill come to our Tea, join our wonderful organization and helpus work for the kids. Please contact our new MembershipChairman, Lady Dee Berkebile-Wright (623-247-2318) [email protected] or any of our LOS Ladies for information.

Until we write again, stay well, safe, happy, busy, and keepworking for the KIDS! Lady Linda DuBois, High Priestess

Ladies Oriental ShrineThis month we have bad news tempered by good news.

Chuck Knight was afflicted by a health problem which necessi-tated a permanent relocation to his family back east. All whoknow him will miss Chuck’s easy manner, quick wit and relia-bility. Please keep him in your prayers. On the better side,Tampa’s Joint Board finally voted to build the new ShrinersHospital in LA. This was necessitated by mandated compliancewith earthquake-proofing regulations and has been hanging firefor many years. For those most acquainted with the situationthere, this news is gratefully welcome.

We have close to $100,000 worth of wheelchairs and othermedical equipment to take to our Salt Lake City Shriners Hos-pital. We’ll take a load up mid-May and can still fit in some morewheelchairs if they can be rounded up (my version of a subtlehint). If you have or know of any chairs for our purposes, please contact the Hospital office! (602-231-0188)

This month the volunteer of the month is actually 4 peopleholding the same job. Doc Hayes, Jim Grone, Chuck Leon andDavid Scrimager are collectively El Zaribah Shrine reps on theBoards of Governors for the LA and SLC Shriners Hospitals. Each hospital holds meetings every month and our reps travelto and hold very responsible positions on these boards. Wecan all be very proud of these individuals and the tremendouslyimportant work they do on behalf of ourselves and the childrenplaced in our care. David Scrimager, Hospital Chairman
