The Ride of SilenceA memorial ride Wednesday, May 16 at 6:30"om Gasworks Park

There are many rides thatstart at Gasworks Park butthis month, on May 16, there

is one that makes a statementabout cycling in Seattle andaround the state. The Ride ofSilence was created after acyclist was killed in Texaswhile being passed by a truckand has since been a memo-rial ride for cyclists in nearlyevery state, as well as aroundthe world. It also makes astatement to motorists and cityofficials that we deserve rightson our shared roads. The Rideof Silence will take place inSeattle on May 16th, begin-ning at 6:30pm from Gas-works Park and proceed, insilence, to Eastlake, Down-

    town,QueenAnne and

Fre-mont.Organiz-ers GaryStrauss, Duane Wright andLouise Kornreich, all SBCmembers, have been busycontacting public officials inthe city and state to makethem aware of the event andto invite them to attend theride. Seattles Mayor Nickelsrecently drafted a proclama-tion to declare May 16 as Rideof Silence Day. The short dis-tance of 10 miles and aprocession-like pace of 12mphmakes it a ride that is welcom-

ingto everyone, from kids, socialriders and commuters to clubriders and racers. If you arenot going to ride, please con-sider volunteering. To find outmore about the Ride of Si-lence, please go towww.rideofsilence.org . Seepage 5 of this newsletter for a

great ride in Walla Walla onJune 23 that is a memorial fora cyclist killed there 3 yearsago.
