The Many Faces of Stewardship at SMG
Harvey Haller was born in Dickinson, North Dakota. After WWII the family moved to Oregon, and he received his degree in Accounting and Market-ing in 1962 from the University of Or-egon.
One of the first things you notice about Harvey when you talk with him is that he is a man of love – of family, the parish, and kids. He met his wife, Patti in April of 1966 and he says he knew “she was the one”. By October, they were wed – 53 years and still going strong. They have two children (David and Allyson) and four lovely grandchildren. He loves sports and when his son’s soc-cer team lost their coach, he read up on soccer and took over the team. He also coached baseball and basket-ball.
When he was transferred here from Seattle in 1978 one of the first things they did was check out churches. Someone mentioned SMG and he said when he walked in, it was love at first sight. What spurred this love? He said it was so welcoming and he never felt such a loving and spiritual environment. He says: “One thing you no-tice is there are no cliques here”. He loves it so much that when U.S. Keds transferred him to Chicago as a Regional Manager in 1982, they merely rented out their home for 3 years and returned so they could continue at SMG. They did the same when he was promoted to the headquarters in New Hampshire in 1987, returning in 1989.
He has served in several capacities at the parish: as a sacristan, in the men’s club, and working on the Pastoral Council for several years. He still lectors occasionally. “Reading God’s Word to people is such a responsibility!” he says. One of his favorite ministries is being an EMHC because you are presenting Christ to people.
For many years he worked in our ministry to Guaymas, Mexico, taking teens there on working retreats three or four times a year not only from SMG but from St. Mary’s High School. He beams when he talks about the good effects it had on the teens.
What would he say to someone who wants to help at the parish? First, think about your attitude towards the faith. Then, consider your personal strengths and what you are happy working on. Sounds like good advice, Harvey.
