Faith Focus: God is truth. Story: Peter and John Heal and Go Before the Sanhedrin

Bible Passage: Acts 3 - 4

REMEMBER VERSE May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may

overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

Support: Provides reflection and assessment for parents through encouragement, prayer, and time in God’s Word Because of the fall, we live in a world that deals with the realities of pain, death, and separation from God. Therefore, suffering is connected to sin because it was original sin that brought forth the suffering in the first place. Even so, Jesus is the One who is able to restore our bodies, hearts, and lives to be whole in Him.

God’s love compelled Jesus to heal the blind man. Because Jesus loved him so much, Jesus desired to restore his physical body. Jesus also desired to bring his soul into a place of connection with God.

God loves you so much that He desires to restore your body, your mind, your heart, and your soul. He longs to pour out His Spirit upon you and restore you to wholeness in Him. Where is there a place in your life where you need God’s restorative power? Are you grieving? Are you in physical pain? Are you simply feeling bored or exhausted? With expectancy in your heart, ask God to restore you—your mind, body, and soul.

** If you do these activities later in the week you can show your child these Saddleback Kids animated video first as a review of the story:

Wondering Questions to discuss as a family: REVIEW STORY FIRST: In this week’s The Big God Story, we heard about Jesus returning back to heaven and sending the Holy Spirit to be with us and help us.

• I wonder what the paralyzed man thought when Peter told him to get up and walk?

• I wonder what it felt like to walk again? • I wonder if you had been there and seen this miracle happen what you would

have thought? I wonder if it would have made you believe that God was true? • I wonder why the leaders didn’t want to listen to what Peter and John were

saying? I wonder why they didn’t think it was true? • I wonder how Peter and John felt when they were put in jail for telling the truth

about God? • I wonder if there is something true that God had shown you? At Home Follow Up Options: Children engage in fun, creative activities designed to pique their curiosity about the day’s portion of The Big God Story.

Option 1: Freeze Dancing

In this activity, children will have fun dancing the way they think the paralyzed man did when he was healed. RELATE In today’s story we heard about how a man who had NEVER been able to walk was healed and then walked and jumped and praised God. Let’s try to move and dance the way you think he did!

DIRECTIONS: • Turn on some worship music and have them move & dance the way they think the paralyzed

man did when he was healed. o Worship songs focused on movement:

§ “Every Move I Make” by Shout Praises Kids § “From the Day I Saved My Soul” by I Am They § “Undignified” by Shout Praises Kids § Free to Dance by Hillsong Live

• Push pause on the music and everyone has to freeze. Then push play again and have everyone move again.

• When the song is over discuss how it would feel to be able to walk and move after being paralyzed your whole life.

Option 2: Family Fun Night In this activity, you will connect as a family to talk about truth. RELATE In today’s story we heard about how after Peter and John healed a paralyzed man they go before the Sanhedrin and share the truth about who Jesus is.

DIRECTIONS • Set aside some time to connect as a family and turn off/put away all electronics. • Make a special snack or dessert and discuss the following:

o What is everyone’s favorite make-believe story? o What is the difference between make-believe stories and Bible stories? o Tell your children that you’re going to tell them two true stories about you as a child and

one made up story. Can they pick out the ones that are true? o Each parent can take turns telling some funny or unusual stories from your childhood.

Two stories should be true and one should be made up. o Have the children vote on which ones are true and which ones are made up. o Talk about how we know that the Bible is the true word of God and so we can trust it. o Read a favorite truth of yours from the Bible to your children (just 1 or 2 verses).

Option 3: Worship & Reflect

In this activity, children will have quiet time and space to consider what they want to praise God for.

RELATE In today’s story we heard about how a paralyzed man was healed and was able to walk for the first time ever! The Bible tells us that after he was healed he praised God. We’re going to think about something we want to praise God for.

DIRECTIONS

• Give children a way to express what they want to praise God for. For preschoolers it could be play dough and they can make an item they want to praise God for. For elementary students it could be markers or watercolors for them to draw or write words of what they want to praise God for.

• Put on some worship music and invite everyone to create something that praises God. o Suggestions for quieter/slower worship songs:

§ “Holy Spirit” by Jesus Culture (Slower tempo)

§ “Spirit of the Living God” by Vertical Worship (Slower tempo) § “Spirit of the Living God” by Phil Wickham (Faster tempo) § “Spirit Move” by Bethel Music & Kalley Heiligenthal (Faster tempo)

• When everyone’s done, share about what everyone wrote/drew and have a time of prayer together.

Option 4: Healed Man Craft In this activity, children will play do a craft to create their own healed man that they can make walk and jump and leap and praise God! DIRECTIONS

• Print out the pattern on the next page for each child. You will also need a 12 inch piece of yarn or string, a stick or popsicle stick and a paper cup for each child.

• Give each child the paper with the paralyzed man body parts on it and have them color it if they’d like or just cut it out and poke a hole in the small circles on the legs and neck.

• Optional: wrap paper around the cup (This will be the man’s body so can color paper first to look like man’s clothes if desired.)

• Punch a small hold in the bottom of the cup and push a piece of yarn/string down through the hole so it’s hanging out of the cup.

• Tie legs to the end of the string.

• String the head through the other end of the yarn/string coming out of the bottom of the cup. Bend neck back at dotted line and tape to the cup.

• Pull the yarn/string up so the lip of the cup is right where the line at the top of the leg piece is. Then tape the yarn/string to the back of the head.

• Fold sleeve part of arm pieces backward along dotted line and then tape the bent back section

to the sides of the cup.

• Tie yarn/string coming out of the top of the head to a popsicle stick or any stick.

• Optional: You can also tape a piece of yarn to the back of the left foot and tie that to the string and then do the same with another piece of yarn on the right foot. The yarn should not have much slack to it when tied from the foot to the stick.

• As you move the stick up and down and tilt it left to right you can make the man leap and walk and dance and shout “Praise God!”
