The Christian Musician Summit (a.k.a. CMS) is a two day conference for

musicians, worship leaders, technicians, songwriters, pastors and indie artists.

We’re excited to partner with Kingdom Bound Ministries to bring the CMS to

the New York. Our plan is to make this an annual event that continues to

grow and provide ongoing support for Christian musicians Northeast.

Our mission is to provide people involved with Christian music practical

training and resources in order to improve their skill and inspire their talent

all to God’s glory. We believe that there is work to be done in growing

God’s kingdom, both in numbers, as well as in terms of discipleship. We

also believe that God has given us the gift of music to glorify Him, as well as

to encourage one another, so let us not take this gift for granted.

The scope of our vision is to provide practical training for everyone from the

worship leader on stage in front of the congregation on Sunday morning, to the

soundman back behind the mixing console, and of course all of the musicians

(guitarists, keyboardists, bassist, drummers, singers etc.) in between. Not only

do we focus on musicians that play on worship teams in their own churches

but also the solo acts, singer/songwriters and Christian bands that play a variety

of musical styles as well.

We’ve been producing this event for five years on the west coast, and it’s been

amazing to see the ripple effect that the CMS has had in lives of those who

attend. We receive notes and emails from folks who share how they have

returned home with a renewed sense of purpose; how their worship teams

and bands have bonded in a way that unites them to be more effective in

their ministry; and how entire congregations have been revived after their

worship teams and leaders return with a revitalized sense of mission. God

is truly at work, and we are honored to be used by Him in this way. All

glory to the LORD!

Blessings!

The Christian Musician Summit, what we call the CMS, is by far the best training event I have ever been to, and as a Christian music festival, the same goes for Kingdom Bound. It made perfect sense for them both to come together to sponsor CMS@theChapel, the largest, most comprehensive summit for Christian musicians in the region. Each year, I look forward to the CMS and the wonderful fellowship and teaching from some of today’s top musicians, technicians and worship leaders. Without exaggeration, it is totally invigorating and always leaves me with fuel for the future, new ideas and passion for my role as a musician in God’s Kingdom. The CMS offers not only some of the best teachers and clinicians available, but also a place where anyone involved on the music team can gather to learn, be encouraged both technically and spiritually. What’s cool is that you’ll meet hundreds of people with the same purpose, each using their creative gifts for the glory of God. Coming together as friends brings a benefit that will be seen for months and even years to come. For you, we know this takes planning and an investment of time and money. With the large number of workshops, clinicians, artists and pro-gear vendors present, the CMS offers unprecedented value to help you faithfully steward your time and finances. Add to that God’s obvious and sweet presence in all of it, and the CMS is way over the top! Each year more and more people discover the CMS and return with more friends.

It is truly the flagship event and something that you won’t want to miss. Our hosts, The Chapel at Crosspoint, have provided an amazing campus for these two inspiring days. God’s Word tells us to…play skillfully…study to show ourselves approved…dwell together in unity…There’s no better place to live that out and fill your tank than at the Christian Musician Summit!Enjoy CMS, visit the falls, eat some wings…See You In Buffalo! Matt Maher / www.mattmahermusic.comDespite the distance of time, culture, and ethnic origins, each person’s call is connected in common struggles and themes, chief of which is, as Jesus says in the gospel of Luke, to “pick up his cross and follow me”.... to empty oneself and be filled with that beautiful grace. To be ‘empty and beautiful.’ For singer/songwriter/worship leader Matt Maher, he is trying to live that same call, as his 11-track Essential Records debut album’s title says, to be made Empty & Beautiful. Having been in full time ministry for over 12 years now, Maher is travelling full time as a “musical missionary,” and is still involved in local church ministry at St Timothy Catholic Community, as well as helping out with the young adult ministry at All Saints Newman Center, on the campus of Arizona State University. “You have to stay rooted in community if you want to lead and write for the Church. That is where your songs come from – from your relationship with Christ, with your immediate family, and the family of believers.”

Vicky Beeching / www.vickybeeching.comAn Oxford-educated songwriter who’s been writing worship songs for the church for more than 10 years, Vicky has a unique brand of theology-rich worship that rocks! Her music spans the lyrical “Above All Else” to the popular “Yesterday, Today and Forever”. Vicky has a singular focus that belies her years, an intuitive feminine heart that relates to worshipers with sensitivity and a willingness to take risks while holding on to her life mission: to grow in intimacy with Jesus.

Phil Keaggy / www.philkeaggy.comIt might seem easy to pigeon-hole Phil Keaggy as simply a great guitar player. He is, after all, recognized in both the Christian and mainstream music communities as one of the best players to ever pick up the instrument. No guitarist (or non-playing layperson for that matter) has ever listened carefully to Keaggy play and not come away in a kind of catatonic awe of his virtuosity on the fret board. Moreover, the soft-spoken musician is usually quite willing to let his guitar speak for him.“As I have watched the Christian music industry mature and grow,” says Keaggy, “I’ve been both encouraged by its energy and at once found myself taking comfort and solace in things that have lasted. I have learned to appreciate my musical and

religious heritage, and have found myself with a deepening respect for form, the liturgical, and antiquity, as well as the spontaneity of youth and how both can be immediate and meaningful ways to convey eternal things in a disposable age.”

Anadara / www.anadara.comAnadara (pronounced Anna-dare-uh) was born and raised in Carlsbad, a sunny suburb of San Diego, CA. Her songs have been recorded on various worship CD’s, played on radio stations across the country and have also been arranged for Choral Anthems. Her music combines her easy going, reflective artistry with her heart for honest, transparent worship Anadara resides in Nashville, TN with her husband Rocky and their dog, Griffin.

Pocket Full of Rockswww.pocketfullofrocks.comA worship band with roots deep in the church, Pocket Full of Rocks has developed a reputation for birthing new worship songs during the middle of a worship service. A glance at Pocket Full of Rocks’ sophomore release invites a closer look. The Dove nominated worship band has not declared its political views but has instead revealed the raw intensity of the album in its title, Manifesto.

“Manifesto is not a word you hear tossed about much,” Michael Farren, the band’s primary songsmith, confesses. “’Manifesto’ is defined as, ‘A public declaration of one’s intents, desires and motives.’ It struck me one morning while sitting on my porch, that there is a manifesto, a divine manifesto, that is being declared over my life; has been since before I was born; a divine, very public announcement; a documentation of God’s desires, a declaration of His motives, His agenda.

I realize this article will be read by people in many areas of the country. Therefore, what I’m about to say might not be popular with everyone, but hear me out. I am a serious St. Louis Cardinals fan. I listen to their games on the radio whenever I can, and even enjoy occasionally going to a game in person to cheer them on. But I might be a bit different than the average fan because I not only like the team, but also the management. Over the years, I have noticed that the ownership has always endeavored to make sure that they have not only good quality players, but also players who will be able to work together. They don’t just want talent. They look to see if the person is a good fit for the Cardinals. I’ve even seen them spend more money to get someone of equal talent who seems like they would be better suited to the team’s style of play. I like that.

Okay, truth be told, probably most professional athletic organizations do this to some degree. They would be silly not to. If they have the choice between two athletes who have similar talent, they should always take the one who seems like the better fit for their team.

High school athletic coaches, on the other hand, don’t have that luxury. All of my kids have played sports at the high school level. The coaches have to work with whatever they get. They can’t be overly picky. Of course they may be able to have tryouts and make cuts. Unlike the pros, however, they can’t pay a few dollars more and get the guy (or girl) who would be a better fit for the team’s style of play. They have to play the hand that is dealt to them. And though it can be frustrating, I think it may take more thought and effort to coach like that than it does to hand-pick the ideal team that will complement the style

of play the coach wants to employ. That high school coach, after all, has to endeavor to meld all those players—those who are extremely talented and those who are less talented, those who are a perfect fit for the team’s style of play and those who are not as well suited, and even those who may not fit well with the others—into a team. That’s an arduous job. It takes plenty of flexibility. And patience. Did I mention lots of patience?

The truth is that most worship leaders are like high school coaches. They have to work with the people they have available. They can’t ask the front office to find them a new bass player just because the one they have has an abrasive personality that doesn’t fit well with the rest of the team. They can’t trade their alto singer for a future draft pick. (Although I’ve met a few worship leaders who would have enjoyed having that option.) No, just like the high school coach they have to somehow make a team out of those varied personalities and skill levels. It’s not easy.

To make matters worse, a high school coach only has to put up with those abrasive personalities and mediocre players for a maximum of four years. Usually less. Worship leaders, on the other hand, may have some of those folks for much, much longer. Did I mention the part about patience?

So, if you’re a worship leader, what do you do? Well, if you’re looking for easy answers here, you’re about to be disappointed. There are no easy answers. Working with people is almost never easy. Often it is extremely difficult. However, investing love and kindness into people is worth it. Seeing lives changed and altered over time because of the Lord working in and through your words and actions

is amazing. God being honored as a result of you demonstrating patience and compassion to others is worth the time and effort.

Truthfully, some of those people may go to their grave still cantankerous and musically mediocre. But through your ongoing interaction with them, the Lord will produce jewels in your heart—jewels of peace and love and kindness and did I mention patience?—that have eternal value.

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” (James 1:2-4).
