The Holy Spirit Gives Us Life

Do you know what a mummy is? A mummy is a dead body that is treated with oils, embalmed, and wrapped with long cloth bandages for burial, most commonly associated with the practice of the ancient Egyptians. Maybe we have seen mummies at the Field Museum, here in Chicago, or we have read about them in history books. Although the body of a mummy is preserved for many thousands of years, the person is still dead. Even though the body has not decayed, the person is still lifeless. Mummies are not alive. A few days ago, I read an interesting article about “spiritual mummies.” This article centered on a homily that Pope Francis gave last week. In his homily, Pope Francis called distracted and vagabond Christians “spiritual mummies.” Pope Francis said, “spiritual mummies stray from the path of Christian life by choosing to stand still not doing evil, but not doing good.

A Christian who doesn’t walk, who doesn’t move on the path, is a ‘non-Christian’ Christian. No one knows what he is. He is a bit of a ‘paganized’ Christian; he’s there, he’s still, but he doesn’t go forward in Christian life. The Beatitudes do not flourish in his life; he does not do the works of mercy; he is still.” It is an interesting comparison. A Christian who does not live the Christian life, who does not practice the Catholic faith, is dead and lifeless, like a mummy. Yes, he/she is here, but he/she is not alive spiritually. To avoid becoming or being “spiritual mummies,” we need the Holy Spirit in our life! That is why we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost. This is why we need to receive the gift the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, so that we may be alive in Christ, and not spiritually dead mummies. The Holy Spirit gives us life. As we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost today, I share an excerpt from a homily by the great Patristic Father and Doctor of the Church, St. Augustine.

St. Augustine teaches, “consider what the soul does within the body. It gives life to all the members. It sees through the eyes, hears through the ears, smells through the nostrils, speaks by the tongue, works by means of the hand, walks by means of the feet. It is present at the same time in all the members that they may live. It gives life to all; to each it allots duties. Such is the Church of God. In some of its saints it works miracles, in others of the saints it utters truth; in some saints it cherishes virginity; in other of the sanctified it honors conjugal modesty; in others this, others that. What the soul is to the body of man, the Holy Ghost is to the Body of Christ: which the Church is. What the soul does in all members of one body, this the Holy Spirit does throughout the Church.” Come, Holy Spirit, come, that we may be alive with God’s grace, and not spiritual mummies.

As we celebrate Pentecost, please pray for the Church around the world, the Archdiocese of Chicago, and our parish. Please remember to pray the Litany of Mary throughout Marian the month of May. May Crowning - This morning at the 9:30 a.m. Mass we held our May Crowning. Our First Communicants and eighth graders were involved in the procession along with our Ladies of the Rosary. Leylani Velazquez was chosen by her class and faculty to crown the Blessed Virgin and Cassi Dudlo was selected to carry the crown and assist. Chess – This past Friday we held our Chess Tournament for the Catholic School League. In all some 40+ players attended our tournament. I wish to thank the following parents who helped with our Chess Tournament and/or donated the refreshments. Thank you to Ms. Bautista, Mrs. Bocanegra, Ms. Cervi, Mr. & Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Kus, Mrs. Lopez, Mrs. Mendoza, Mrs. Ponce, Mrs. Rios, Mr. & Mrs. Schaffer, and Mr. Wiatrak. Our end of the year Chess Party will take place on Thursday, May 18th from 3:15 until 4:30 p.m. There will be no chess on Monday or Tuesday next week. As our season comes to an end it is time to say farewell to eighth graders, Javier Castillo, Joseph Diaz, Adam Kus, Michael Meister and Aidan Patino. They were quite a group, many beginning to play chess in kindergarten or first grade. I have enjoyed the time spent playing chess and seeing them develop into excellent players. I wish them well and encourage them to join their high schools Chess Teams. Registration 2015 – 2016 – Our open registration has begun. If you are interested in a Catholic Education for your children, please contact me at the school office, I would welcome the opportunity to discuss our school program. ¿Usted sabe lo que es una momia? Una momia es un cadáver que ha sido tratado con aceites, embal-samado y envuelto con vendas de tela largas para el entierro, más comúnmente asociado con la prácti-ca de los antiguos egipcios. Tal vez hemos visto momias en el Museo de Ciencia e Industria, aquí en Chicago, o hemos leído sobre ellos en los libros de historia. Aunque el cuerpo de una momia se con-serva durante miles de años, la persona está muerta. A pesar de que el cuerpo no ha decaído, la perso-na está todavía sin vida. Las Momias no están vivas. Hace unos días leí un interesante artículo sobre "momias espirituales." Este artículo se centra en una homilía que el Papa Francisco dio la semana pasada. En su homilía, el Papa Francisco llamó "momias espirituales” a los cristianos vagabundos. Francisco dijo, "la momias espirituales” se desvían del ca-mino de la vida cristiana por la elección de no hacer daño, pero no hacen el bien.” Un cristiano que no

camina, que no se mueve en el camino, es un cristiano “no Cristiano”. Nadie sabe lo que es. Es un poco de un “Cristiano paganizado”; él está ahí, quieto, pero él no avanza en la vida cristiana. Las Bienaventuranzas no flo-recen en su vida; él no hace las obras de miseri-cordia; él es tranquilo." Es una comparación in-teresante. Un cristiano que no vive la vida cris-tiana, que no practica la fe católica, está muerto y sin vida, como una mo-mia. Sí, él/ella está aquí, pero él/ella no está viva espiritualmente.

¡Para evitar ser "momias espirituales," necesitamos el Espíritu Santo en nuestra vida! Por eso celebramos la Solemnidad de Pentecos-tés. Es por esto que nece-sitamos recibir el don del Espíritu Santo en Pente-costés, para que podamos estar vivos en Cristo, y no muertos como momias espirituales. El Espíritu Santo nos da la vida. Hoy, al celebrar el descenso del Espíritu Santo en Pentecostés, comparto un fragmento de una homilía por el gran Padre Patrística y doctor de la Iglesia, San Agustín.

San Agustín enseña, "considera lo que el alma hace dentro del cuerpo. Se da vida a todos los miembros. Se ve a través de los ojos, oye a través de los oídos, huele a través de la nariz, habla por la lengua, funciona por medio de la mano, camina por medio de los pies. Está presente al mismo tiempo en todos los miembros para que vivan. Da vida a todos; a cada uno se asigna deberes. Tal es la Iglesia de Dios. En algunos de sus santos obra milagros, en otros de los santos profiere la verdad; en algunos santos valora la virginidad; en otro del santificó, rinde homenaje a la modestia con-yugal; en otros, esto, otros aquello. Lo que el alma es en el cuerpo del hombre, el Espíritu Santo es al Cuerpo de Cristo: que la Iglesia es. Lo que hace el alma en todos los miembros de un mismo cuerpo, esto hace el Espíritu Santo en la Igle-sia." Ven, Espíritu Santo, ven, para que podamos estar vivos con la gracia de Dios, y no ser momias espirituales.

Z biurka Ks. Proboszcza Mumia to ciało zmarłej osoby, które przed pochówkiem namaszczono olejami i zawinięto w płócienne bandaże. Tego rodzaju pogrzeby praktykowali głównie starożytni Egipcjanie, chociaż owy zwyczaj nie jest związany wyłącznie z nimi. Wielu z nas zapewne czytało o mumiach w książkach historycznych, lub widziało je w muzeach. Chociaż jej ciało jest zakonserwowane na wiele tysięcy lat, mumia wciąż pozostaje nieboszczykiem. Mumia jest martwa, mimo iż jej ciało nie uległo rozkładowi. Przed kilkoma dniami natrafiłem na ciekawy artykuł zainspirowany zeszłotygodniową homilią papieża Franciszka. W swojej homilii, Ojciec Święty określił chrześcijan wykazujących bierną postawę w sprawach wiary, mianem „duchowych mumii”. Zdaniem papieża, osoby, które zboczyły ze ścieżki chrześcijańskiego życia, stoją w miejscu i nie robią nic. Wprawdzie nie grzeszą,

ale też i nie czynią dobra. Chrześcijanin, który nie idzie stale naprzód, jest chrześcijaninem po trosze „pogańskim”. Nikt tak naprawdę nie wie, jak określić taką osobę. Ten człowiek niby żyje, ale jest bierny. Nie rozwija w sobie Łaski Pańskiej; nie wykonuje dzieł miłosierdzia. To ciekawe porównanie: chrześcijanin, który nie przeżywa swojej wiary na co dzień, nie praktykuje jej, jest w zasadzie martwy. Owszem, ta osoba żyje w sensie fizycznym, lecz duchowo przypomina mumię. Jeżeli chcemy uniknąć takiego losu, musimy zwrócić się po pomoc do Ducha Świętego! Dlatego celebrujemy Święto Zesłania. Musimy dzisiaj przyjąć Dary Ducha Świętego, aby mieć życie w Chrystusie. Duch Święty jest źródłem życia. Na okoliczność dzisiejszej uroczystości, pragnę się z Wami podzielić refleksją wielkiego Ojca Kościoła, św. Augustyna. Święty pisze mianowicie, że Duch ożywia całe ludzkie ciało. Widzi naszymi oczami, słyszy uszami, czuje nozdrzami, mówi naszym językiem, działa naszymi rękoma i porusza się za pomocą naszych nóg. Duch ożywia równocześnie wszystkie członki i każdemu przydziela odrębną funkcję. Taki właśnie jest Kościół Boży. Niektórzy Jego święci czynią cuda; inni głoszą Prawdę; dla jeszcze innych największym skarbem jest skromność lub czystość cielesna. Czym jest dusza dla ludzkiego ciała, tym Duch Święty jest dla Ciała Chrystusa – Kościoła. Co dusza czyni z członkami doczesnego ciała, to Duch czyni w całym Kościele. „O Stworzycielu Duchu przyjdź”, napełnij nas Bożą Łaską, abyśmy nie byli „duchowymi mumiami”. Serdecznie gratulujemy uczniom tutejszej polskiej szkoły im. Henryka Sienkiewicza, którzy w minioną sobotę przystąpili do swojej I Komunii Świętej. Podczas obchodów Święta Zesłania Ducha Świętego, pamiętajcie w modlitwie o Kościele powszechnym, o Archidiecezji Chicagowskiej oraz o naszej parafii. Pamiętajcie również o tym, aby przez cały maj odmawiać litanie do Matki Bożej. Święta Maryjo Rozwiązująca Węzły, miej nas zawsze w Swej opiece. Święty Józefie, Dobry Patronie, módl się za nami.
