• I have lived in the community since 1993, and have seen the transformation from a new suburban neighborhood to a mature established neighborhood• I have been thinking about how I want to sign off from

my time as President of the Community Association.• The past few weeks I have been spending time walking

all through the community and reflecting what our community offers.• It has reaffirmed to me that we have the good fortune

and privilege of living in, and serving in, a fantastic and diverse part of Calgary.

Personal Thoughts

• Diverse Neighborhood – Mix of Residential, Business and Recreation• Ranked 48th best neighborhood in Calgary out of 185 (2019). 1 2018 we

were 75th. • Safe Neighborhood ranking in the bottom Quartile for crime statistics in

Calgary 1,2

• Friendly and supportive community members• Good community infrastructure – will continue to get better• Great Amenities nearby – River Pathway, Fish Creek Provincial Park, Golf

Course and driving range, playgrounds, schools, sports fields, outdoor hockey rinks, close to YMCA, Trico, South Center, South Point Retail Area, City Transit and CTrain (coming soon)

• Positive working relationships with elected officials, public agencies and community services

• Reliable, engaged community association and volunteers

In 2017 when I became President this is what I

said my expectations for the Board were:

• Contribute in actions and in words

• Be accountable, take responsibility

• Don’t accept the status quo, strive for

improvement

• Let's get in front of issues and activities, and not

be reactive to circumstances

• Let's try to get to know each other, help each

other, and work together

Prioritizing Activities of the Board

• Created a 5 yr business plan to guide board activities.

• Re-organized board functions into a committee structure

• Focused activities of committees based on Business Plan priorities

• Committees were created to foster teamwork, accountability and support for Committee members

• Limited the scope of our activities to those items that were most needed and that could be successfully implement or accomplish

• Do what is needed, and do it well mentality

Since 2017 it has been my pleasure to have worked with many great DQCA Board members. I wish to thank everyone for their hard work and dedication while serving as Directors.

Technology

• Google – Converted board activities to Google Docs, and email

• Website upgrade, current and updated content

• Use of Tech at Board Meeting – for Agendas, minutes, presenting information

• Conducted online Membership survey in 2018

• Converted memberships and Timbits soccer to online payments

• Enhanced social media exposure

• Quick Books - to better manage our accounting needs (coming this year)


Rink Shack


Rink Shack

• A major infrastructure project that was originally initiated in 2016. The Douglasdale rink shack, which had been in place almost 30 years, was at the end of its life, and required replacement.

• This project was completed in fall of 2019

• This was a significant infrastructure project undertaken by the Board, and funded by revenue from past casinos.

• Hats off to Renee Gallant who took on this difficult project and was able to balance the needs and wants of the various stakeholders and work effectively with our Contractor - NCI Construction

• Great job.


DouglasGlen Enhanced Landscape Maintenance Program

DouglasGlen Enhanced Landscape Maintenance Program

The DouglasQuarry Community Association (DQCA) is responsible for the enhanced landscape maintenance program for DouglasGlen.

• The program was previously administered by the volunteer-based Douglas Glen Maintenance Association, however due to lack of volunteers, the association was discontinued in 2015 and the program was suspended in 2016.

• in 2017 a decision was made to incorporate the administration of the program under the DQCA.

• Since that time it has been expertly managed by VP Jason Doering and the Landscape Maintenance Committee.

• DouglasGlen has seen the benefits of this program and continual improvements over the last 3 years.


Membership & Communication

• Darrin Gallant has efficiently been managing this aspect of the DQCA. Major accomplishments include:

• Web site redesign in 2017

• Online membership payment and renewal.

• Volunteer positions descriptions

• Membership survey in 2018

• Enhancement of the Benefit Partner program and increased accessibility for member to access info.

• Development of FAQ section on

• Posting of important notices and information for community.

• Access DQCA audited Financial information and AGM presentations

• Management of membership and payments for Timbits program


What we have accomplished

(2017-2020)

Events - Family BBQ and 5 km Run and Family Skate

Thanks to Heather and Ruth these two annual events in held in September and December, have continued to be a huge success. Both events attract families and local business from the community.

Finances

• The DQCA has maintained a healthy balance sheet over the past 3 years thanks to Doug Edwards our Treasurer until December 2019.

• We were happy to welcome Robb Myron to the board as Treasurer replacing Doug in Jan 2020.

• The association works within a limited operating budget each year and strives to break even and has successfully had either a small surplus or slight deficit each year.

• The DQCA has maintained surplus balances in our unrestricted account of approx. $80,000 for the past several years. We also have also had the benefit having regular casinos revenue to help supplement improvements to DQCA infrastructure. These revenues come to us approx. every 18 months and typically inject $60-$70,000 per casino. Recently these funds were used to build the new Rink Shack in Douglasdale.

• DQCA expenses include items such as paying utilities, website hosting, infrastructure maintenance, running events.

Casino

• As noted in the Finance section casinos are our major source of funds for the community association. We have held 2 casinos since 2017, and have had a full contingent of volunteers for both

• In 2019 major improvements were made in how we manage the casino process from beginning to end.

• Ruth Nickel and Darrin Gallant streamlined the volunteer recruitment process taking it online. Volunteers can now go onto the website and see the jobs and shifts that are available. Volunteers can select what works best for them.

• Automated confirmation and reminders are sent to volunteers, eliminating manual follow-up by casino organizers. This new process has made a significant difference to effectively managing our casinos and ensuring that this important fund raising endeavour continues.


Since 2017 DQCA has receive over $130,000 in casino revenue.

Timbits Soccer


• Truly one of the great successes of the community, DouglasQuarry Timbits Soccer is a recreational outdoor league of over 460 children, run entirely by volunteers, and sponsored by Tim Hortons the Calgary Minor Soccer Association

• This league has an excellent reputation as a great way to learn about soccer in a fun, no pressure environment.

• As long as I have been in Dougalsdale this league has existed.

• We continue to work together with the Timbits volunteers to ensure the success of this program.

Community Garden


• One of the nicest spaces in the community

• A place to grow, meet, or to sit and think

• Everyone in the community can make use of this space, everyone is welcome here.

• Some of the plots have required remediation to fix an invasive root problem caused by nearby poplars

• Funds have been set aside and work has begun to fix the issue.

• A Garden committee was established as part of the Board structure in 2019 to better align Garden group members with the DQCA Board.

I move that the directors of the DouglasQuarry Community Association appoint Jason Doering as the President, and Ken Rossi as Vice President, and that these appoints and the election of all other board members shall be voted on by the membership at the next Annual General Meeting held by the association.
