CALVARY EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH OF DOVER, PA THE REV. JOHN M. WOODS, PASTOR May 10, 2015 8:30 A.M. This Sunday's image of the life the risen Christ shares with us is the image of friendship. We are called to serve others as Jesus came to serve; but for John's gospel, the image of servanthood is too hierarchical, too distant, to capture the essence of life with Christ. Friendship captures the love, the joy, the deep mutuality of the relaƟonship into which Christ invites us. The Greeks believed that true friends are willing to die for each other. This is the mutual love of ChrisƟan community commanded by Christ and enabled by the Spirit. To ALL the Ladies of Calvary!

Prelude “ Great Is Thy Faithfulness” Arranged by David Nevue Played In Honor Of All Women On Mother’s Day

*Confession and Forgiveness Pastor and Congregation

Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who calls us beloved children, who gathers us into one flock, who guides us into all truth.

Amen.

Let us confess our sins, trusting that God will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Faithful and just God,

we confess that we are captive to doubt and fear, bound by the ways that lead to death.

We have not loved our sisters and brothers as you have first loved us. Forgive us, God of mercy.

Let your Holy Spirit work in us to change our lives and make us new, that we may know the abundant life given in Jesus Christ, our risen Lord.

Amen.

In this is love, not that we loved God but that God loved us and sent the Son to atone for our sins. In the name of + Jesus Christ, I announce to you that your sins are forgiven.

Let the perfect love of God cast out fear, fill you with joy, and inspire you to live for others. Amen.

*Gathering Hymn “Oh, Sing To The Lord” (Brazilian Folk Song) ELW # 822 *Apostolic Greeting Pastor

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

*Hymn of Praise “Glory To God” WOV PG. 29

*Prayer Of The Day Let us pray. O God, from whom all good things come: Lead us by the inspiration

of your Spirit to think those things which are right, and by your goodness help us to do them; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you

and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

Choir Anthem: “Risen! Christ Is Risen!” Lloyd Larson

WE HEAR HIS WORD

First Reading: Acts 10:44–48  Lay Reader                                  A reading from Acts.

While Peter shares the good news of Jesus with a Gentile soldier and his family, the Holy Spirit comes upon them. Recognizing that the Spirit works inclusively

in the lives of both Jews and Gentiles, Peter commands that these Gentiles also be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

44While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. 45The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, 46for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, 47Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? 48So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Psalm: Psalm 98                             Choir and Congregation, Responsively Sing to the LORD | a new song,* for he has done | marvelous things. 2With his right hand and his | holy arm* has he won for him- | self the victory. 3The LORD has made | known his victory;* his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight | of the nations. 4He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the | house of Israel,* and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory | of our God. R 5Shout with joy to the LORD, | all you lands;* lift up your voice, re- | joice, and sing. 6Sing to the LORD | with the harp,* with the harp and the | voice of song. 7With trumpets and the sound | of the horn* shout with joy before the | king, the LORD. 8Let the sea make a noise and all | that is in it,* the lands and those who | dwell therein. R 9Let the rivers | clap their hands,* and let the hills ring out with joy before the LORD, when he comes to | judge the earth. 10In righteousness shall he | judge the world* and the peo- | ples with equity. R Second Reading: 1 John 5:1–6      Lay Reader

A reading from John.

God's children believe that Jesus is the Messiah and love God by keeping God's commandments. Thus the world is conquered not

through military might but through love and faith. 4

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. 2By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, 4for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. 5Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

*Verse “Alleluia” WOV PG. 31

*Gospel: John 15:9–17                                                                                                   Pastor The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the fifteenth chapter.

Glory to you, O Lord.

On the night of his arrest, Jesus delivers a final testimony to his disciples to help them in the days ahead. Here, he repeats the most important of all his commands,

that they love one another. 9As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. 12This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Message Pastor *The Nicene Creed WOV PG. 32 *The Prayers Worship Assistant, Congregation, Pastor

Confident that the resurrection of Christ has defeated sin and death, we offer our prayers for the church, the world, and all people in need.

For the church on earth, for those who proclaim the gospel, and for the ministry of congregations throughout the world, that the Holy Spirit guide all to love and service,

let us pray. Have mercy, O God.

For seas and fields, plants and animals, for the well-being of the earth, and for those who advocate for the just use of God's gifts, that all creation continue to thrive, let us pray.

Have mercy, O God. For the nations of the world, those who govern and those who serve, that leaders accomplish

their duties faithfully and judge people with equity, let us pray Have mercy, O God.

For the sick, the lonely, those who mourn, those afflicted with malaria, and those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit (especially), that God provide them with compassionate caregivers,

let us pray. Have mercy, O God.

For diverse families in all places, for mothers celebrating this day, and for all parents and caregivers as they teach their children to know and love God, let us pray.

Have mercy, O God. In thanksgiving for all the saints who have died in Christ, that their faithfulness to the gospel

inspire us every day, let us pray. Have mercy, O God.

Holy God, by the death and resurrection of your Son, you have granted new life, abundant renewal, and salvation. Hear our prayers for the sake of the one

who has set us free, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

*The Peace The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you.

Proper Preface Pastor It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, for the glorious resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ, the true Paschal Lamb who gave himself to take away our sin, who in dying has destroyed death, and in rising has brought us to eternal life. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Happy, Happy 66th wedding anniversary to Bud and Maxine Klunk! The altar flowers were sponsored last Sunday in celebration of this wonderful event! The Youth Group really appreciates all you do for them! Due to three years of fund raising, they are not in the position to have to ask for massive funds for the National Youth Gathering this year. However, if you are so inclined to donate funds for the incidental expenses, such as meals not covered by event registration, and the Detroit Community project-school supplies, food, diapers... they will gratefully accept your donations. There are cans in the Narthex for your donations. Any monies not needed will go back into the Youth Savings Account for future gatherings. Prayer Chain/List: if you have a loved one who is in need of prayer, please contact Zina Compton at 586-2718 or call the church office at 298-3891 or email your request to [email protected] . Also, please check the list on page 13 of this bulletin and let us know if any of your friends are now better and we can take those names off that list. Zina will start an immediate prayer chain by calling those who have signed up for our Prayer Chain. No Children’s Chimes Rehearsals until Miss Marcia returns to us. The Hand Bells are being refurbished! Thanks Everyone!

Get your Weis and Giant Gift Cards! If you make purchases at Weis and Giant, pick up gift cards here on Sunday mornings and help support this significant Calvary fund raiser! They make wonderful gifts all year around! You can even use these cards to also purchase gas at Giant and postage stamps at both stores. DID YOU KNOW...any profit from Gift Card Sales-over the budget amount will go to benefit Calvary’s Children.

The Simply Giving Program: Enjoy the convenience of electronic giving. which allows you to make donations on a scheduled, automatic basis. If you are writing checks and preparing envelopes every week, you will especially appreciate electronic giving. It is convenient for you and provides much-needed donation consistency for our church. How to get started: To set up electronic donations, simply complete an authorization form located in the narthex and return to the church office. Donations can be debited automatically from either a checking or savings account.

Property Expansion Committee Update Immediately following the meeting on Sunday, we contacted the realtor who has been helping us with 17-19 N. Main to let him know we were ready to make an offer. Later that evening, he called to let me know that the listing had just expired, and the owner was no longer interested in selling. So we are not able to place a bid at this time. We know that the property was a short sale, so there is a chance that it will be foreclosed in the near future. Our committee will continue to meet to determine the next steps, and we will continue to update on our progress. Thank you to the congregation for all of your support and feedback during this venture!
